Imagine a 20 meter tall vine. Would it rather bring water that far up or just catch rain in some of the pitchers and then absorbing it from the pitcher. Additionally don't many upper pitchers have less of a lid? Seems like they might wanna catch a little water.
I love it! I believe you are on to something... sounds totally logic that they will collect water from the closest source. I'll have to interview someone that studied them on the field now haha
@@WindowsillNepenthes i answer both you two. To my knowledge, Nepenthes and Cephalotus will absorb water from their pitchers if humidity soil is low. Totally logical. That’s the reason why pitchers dry out if humidity and watering go down, and that’s also the logical reason why they won’t pitcher (because of good conditions absence). This info is obtained in McPherson’s Pitchers of the old world book!

The deshydratation after re-potting comes because if you have a low humidity environment (we’re gonna suppose that the plant was before the purchase in a high humidity environment as nepenthes must be), it will dry completely out. The reason is the stomas were totally opened for transpiration, so in the new home the plant is gonna lose too much water by them because roots aren’t able to absorb too much water in that time. To prevent this effect, a small plastic bag for frozen foods are super effective!
I think a video about the process of buying a nepenthes would be cool. Like you buy one from a nursery and it arrives. Its pitchers die, is that normal? If that is a normal sign, what's an abnormal sign? How do you know what's shipping stress versus something else? A general roadmap for that period of time after getting a new plant and how to know if it's struggling because of the set up or because of shipping would be neat (if you haven't already done a video on it)

It was an experiment by adding water into pitchers with digestive fluids. The pitchers retained digestive properties even with dilution. I need to work on humidity. My pitcher liquid keeps drying and i keep filling it half way with water just to keep it from drying entirely. The humidity in my place ranges from 58 to 85 right now. Water kept outside dries up so fast that i really need a humidifier for the Neps.

For small plants, yes you can foliage feed, you have no choice. But as soon as it can handle a betta fish pellet I tend to switch. But that's just my way of doing. ;)
For sure :) Some animals adapt for that. There is even some mosquitoes larva growing in n. ampullaria's pitcher and even if I hate mosquitoes, I find this adaptation cool. ;)

Hi Remi. I'm catching up on your videos. Been away from internet for a while. When I was new I used to fill the pitchers to the top. It didn't hurt them but I found they would drink the water. A few days later the water level was low. I'd get annoyed and keep watering them. I thought that was neat and I quit doing it.
As you can cut the crate, really any kind of rectangle of more than 2 inches would work. I put 2 layers of crate to have a lot of water under the pots. ;)
A few hours of sunlight is good. Too little light is often a problem. And you don't remove any bug, they will continue to feed the plant even weeks after they are in the pitcher.
Why feed via the pitcher? It does not work the usual way to feed a plant? I’ve never had one of these and so am completely ignorant about it. When you say the older pitcher is still working, do you mean it’s catching insects?
Carnivorous Plants evolved in really poor soil and their roots couldn't get enough food, so they evolved their leaves to find/catch food. And now their roots are not designed to handle a lot of root fertilizer. So we feed them the same way they eat in the wild: via the pitchers.
I think it's different for north American pitchers because they tend to keep their leaves for 2-3 growing seasons and usually they stop producing acid and rely more on bacteria to break down material. I live in a desert climate and tend to add water to my pitchers
Yes true, young plants (/ pitchers?) rely on acid but older ones rely on the ecosystem living inside of them. But in my very limited experience and from what I've seen online they are very rotting resistant anyway. There's this video by Green Jaws who throws an entire bird in an S. purpurea and the pitcher still looks fine after many weeks, whereas his similar sized N. robcantleyi pitcher looked like shit. I've also seen sarracenia that were split open and that were stuffed to the noggin with insects, something that would never work with Nepenthes. By the way, when you look at their upright lids, aren't Sarraceniae supposed to catch rain water anyway?

My nepenthes is growing a whole other nepenthes under itself from the roots and the new growth is growing small very tiny green cups and the lids are opened already is this normal? They are really hairy too the tiny cups.
Orchid fertilizer diluted at 150 ppm, once a week (foliage + pitchers) is my favorite for small plants. When they are bigger I keep the foliage but put 1 Osmocote once per pitcher. Some paper thin pitchers only get liquid Orchid fertilizer as they can't stand the Osmocote.

My awful ex Roomate killed them (so sad im tempted to out her online as a plant murderer) so I moved into my own studio and I’m starting over with my pitchers💚💚 and need a recommendation for a good place to order from?
On but are you sure something else was on? Did the was new? It's not a 100% guarantee method, but that just increases the chance not having the pitchers to dry and die post shipping. ;)
@@WindowsillNepenthes I saw one video before on yt shorts of a person filling a pitcher so I thought that's what you had to do I got mine at a big box store. It seems to be happy now it has 2 pitchers at a time it's pretty small I haven't fed it anything yet cause winter killed off all the bugs. Plants are all about living and learning

Osmocote? It's weird with them, sometimes it helps and sometimes it just burns the pitcher for me. I use it still though, just not the small ones.
The fluid in the pitcher is similar to HCl and our stomach acid; yet some animals rear their offspring in them for safety.

A few hours of sunlight is good. Too little light is often a problem. And you don't remove any bug, they will continue to feed the plant even weeks after they are in the pitcher.

Sure as long as it's diluted to no more than 150 ppm.

On a 2L bottle, I put 7 drops to reach 140 ppm so that's good for feeding once a week ;)

From my observations, the liquid is only produced before the pitcher opens.

Yes, it's a basal shoot, you can leave it or cut it. I have videos about that. ;)

I put water in my plant’s pitcher before and then the next day or two mold grew on it. 😔
