The Diamine Oxblood is the first ink I ever bought. I keep a bottle of it always. It's one of my faves. I think it's because I'm a lefty and it happens to dry pretty quickly. Also, I grade papers, and the Oxblood is just the right amount of traumatic for final essays.
Speaking as a certified grammar fanatic, I can say confidently that "inks" is totally acceptable grammar. A plurality of collectivities is properly referred to by pluralizing the collective noun. You can speak, for example, of "the peoples of the world," even though "people" is already a collective noun. So please go on proudly speaking of "inks."
I also regularly speak of inks when I am discussing brands, lines or some other subset of the whole. I have iron gall inks, I have blue inks and I have lubricated inks. I go to the singular for discussion of one particular manufacturer and colour. A few days ago I cleverly dropped a glass bottle of diamine registrar's Ink and it shattered all over my kitchen floor.
Your sample of the Oxblood makes me think of the red velvet seats and the curtains that used to hang in the old grand movie theaters of years past (think 30's, 40's and into the 50's). A rich but not overpowering color.
I discovered fountain pens this year during quarantine and I love them. I wanted a light pastel lavender color and the only ink that fit that color profile was Sailor Manyo Nekoyanagi. Once I found it I was going to buy it and I really did not care that it was a more expensive ink. I love it.
Anyone else using this video as a shopping list? I'm basically the Futurama "Shut up and take my money" point except I could listen to Brian and Drew talk pen stuff forever.
Couldn't be more bizarre than the numbering system. All-new! Sailor 257⅓, just like 2194.57 except with 33% more 75⅘. Talk about making a good ink less likely to sell by throwing numbers at it. Oxblood. Marine. River of Fire. I can get behind those. 279? Not a chance.
When it comes to Diamine inks, I have a bottle of Ox Blood and do like it but I find myself continually going back to Ancient Copper as my go to Diamine ink. I absolutely love that colour. Aurora Borealis is also a stand out for me in the Diamine line.
I'm happy to see Oxblood make the list! It's my favorite ink color, and I keep my Coral TWSBI Eco-T inked up with it. It was a color I didn't like at first, since it can look brownish on some papers. But I've come to really love it--yes, more than the flashier Red Dragon. Oxblood has a richness and deep drama to it that is still classy for letters AND is work safe. Plus it looks so bad-ass in a demonstrator pen. :D I picked it as one of the colors I gave a friend with his first fountain pen this Christmas.
First, love Goulet Pen Company! Thank you guys! Secondly, I am surprised the Diamine Holiday Sheens didn’t make the list. They are all very fun to write with, almost as fun as the J. Herbin full line - which is my absolute favorite!! Lastly, I hope you both continue to stay safe and are able to post more fun & informative videos!
I think Oxblood being not as bright is exactly why I prefer it. It's a nice dark red that you can write an entire page with and be able to read back without being blinded
My top 5 inks I enjoyed the most in 2020 (in no order): - Organics Studio: Ralph Waldo Emerson - Robert Oster: Great Southern Ocean - Pilot Iroshizuku: Yama Budo - Vinta: Terracotta - Tono and Lims: Diamond Dust
Oxblood really surprised me when I had it as a gift last year. Now one of my favourites. And you've reminded me that I want to but Atlantide this year. Thanks for the review.
I've been loving Vinta and Sailor inks this year...especially since they have some comparable dupes to some elusive Troublemaker Ink shades. The Sailor Inks look AMAZING on NullRefill paper...just out of this world.
it has been several years since I dropped my hobby of collecting pens. Nice to see that the Goulet pen company has a youtube channel. Wow, you haven't aged at all Brian.
These sailor inks look HAWT! The newest in additions I got were a pair of noodlers, Bad Black Moccasin and Lexington gray. With Bad Black, I was looking for an alternative to the “Bulletproof” Black, which is absolutely great, but the drying time was killing my daily use of it. The moccasin has many of the properties that make a great Black ink and the dry time is :chefs_kiss: exactly what I wanted. Lexington gray is stand alone, I was looking for a nice gray. My favorite Infinite Gray was no longer carried, but this is a very close second choice. It’s dry time is similar to BBM, but it tends to feather more. It’s not a negative, but it is noticeable. I thank you all for your hard work this last, wild year. Here’s to 2021, being more stable!
I am relatively new to inks but I definitely bought my robert oster maroon partly because bright red is seen as a signal color. so the maroon, which does its job of making you question if you look at brown or red pretty well, is definitely a safer more conservative approach.
I had to teach online this year so I didn't get to mark with Oxblood, which is my FAVOURITE. Glad it was in there, although with the amazing Vert Atlantide.
Oxblood was my first ink purchase when I discovered Goulet Pens. I have been wavering on which grey Sailor ink I want to invest in, and the Manyo Haha in this video may have finally tipped the scales with the Nekoyanagi also making it to my wishlist. I had been leaning toward the 123, which definitely looks nicer in this video than on my computer, but that Haha may just have convinced me despite the price tag. Thanks for this very helpful video, and Happy New Year to all of you at Goulet Pens!! :) Warmly, Susanne
I've had a pen dedicated to Oxblood Ink for years. It is a more subtle red, almost brown. Love it. The new Shimmer from J. Herbin is one that I missed. I will probably need to add it to my collection. Thanks for a great roundup!
Hey Drew and Bryan, Great video! I find the Sailor Ink Studio and Manyo Inks too watery and pale. The J. Herbin Atlantide green is intriguing. I love my Diamine Liberty Elysium as one of my favorite blues and Red Dragon as my go-to red. Happy New Year
I had a DnD playing friend asking me to recommend him "Two pens and a decent black ink, my budget is $50" for playing as the DM. The global situation made more people turn to the game, and made some DM's want to create visuals to share when you couldn't see each other. I pointed out he could get some ink samples if he needed some color accents for his maps and calligraphy. Oxblood got bought once as a sample, then again as a bottle, in case of vampire NPCs.
Got my first set of samples yesterday and ordered Nitrogen this morning (or tried to, it's out of stock)! I am brand-new to fountain pens but that amazing ink has hooked me!
I bought Oxblood and Vert Atlantide on this list. The first ink I knew I needed was Emerald of Chivor. I got a sample of Oxblood, and I just love it. I love the depth of color. I prefer those deeper reds to the true red-reds (though I love all colors). It was a must-buy for me. I wish I had bought the big bottle.
Happy New Year! HA - I guess I'm doing something right as I have all of them LOL! I DO agree with Drew on the Sailor Ink Studio ones - names are MUCH easier to remember!
I like the numbers. At least with #’s you could devise a system where which the style # itself imparts info. It’s how our company did style #’s for many thousands of designs; numbers & some letters. We were wholesale. I guess we didn’t need catchy names.
I like bigger samples as well so I usually order from places that offer larger sample sizes (4ml) or order doubles if they are 2ml. Though if the ink ends up being some thing I really don't like, 2ml is just perfect to use it all up and not have any left overs to wander what to do with.
Perhaps Oxblood is having a resurgence in preparation for 2021 being the year of the Ox? Or maybe it's just that Diamine inks are fantastic in terms of colour, flow, quality and value.
I'm just now getting into fountain pens and OxBlood really stood out to me so chose it as my first ink. Can't really say why, but it's a great color. Subdued, yet standout I guess I'd say.
I've been on a shimmer binge lately and Diamine inks have fulfilled that with their wide variety. I've also dabbled in mixing colours (staying within a brand of course) for some regular inks that were too light for my tastes. I hope to continue experimenting in 2021.
@@SnaykEyes77 I used the Diamine “happy holidays” shimmering ink on all my holiday cards this year, and used it in a Levenger brand pen and a Cross Townsend. Both seem to have sturdy feeds, and using a broad nib definitely helps.
@@SnaykEyes77 Most of my shimmer friendly pens are medium, broad or stub. Don't even bother trying it with Fine or EF nibs. I've noticed some wetter pens work better. Diamine has a two types of Shimmer inks, so you may have to experiment. The Shimmertastic line is very shimmer heavy and I only use them in broad or stub nibs or pens that are wet writers. The less shimmer inks eg. Jack Frost, have been fine in medium nibs. Currently have been using a stock Medium nib Lamy2000 with Jack Frost and no issues at all. I also modified a couple of feeds in a TWISBI Mini and Narwhal (Widening the main groove with a knife to deliver more ink) and that helped a great deal in delivering more ink and reducing any clogs. The other thing to try is exchanging nibs/feeds. I picked up a set of nibs/feeds from FPR (Fountain Pen Revolution) to try some flex nibs. Those feeds are setup to deliver a lot of ink so that also works great for shimmer inks. You can get #5 or #6 nibs and feed that will fit most pens easily. I'm still playing around with these and trying different combinations. One more thing, any pens with shimmer in, I will rotate and gently spin them to unsettle and shimmer before writing. The clear demonstrators are great so you can actually see that the shimmer is in suspension. If you use a cartridge converter, make sure it has an agitator inside to break up the shimmer before writing.
@@qvisionstudios - Cool, thanks for the reply. I have a TWSBI Eco with a broad nib and that was actually the one I tried shimmer ink on first but had blockage issues after a while. That being said, I was using Van Dieman shimmer ink and have had flow problems with that brand in the past even with their non shimmer inks. I had awful problems with Van Dieman ink in my FPR Himalaya v2 w/ultra flex. I have since moved to Diamine and Waterman inks in my FPR without a problem. My Noodlers flex pens also seem to work better with those brand inks as well. In any case, it looks like a bit of trial and error is in order if I'm going to get any kind of success with shimmer inks. I appreciate your detailed response and will definitely take on your advice. I hope you had a great new year and thanks again for the reply. Take care.....
I have obtained a bottle of Sailor Manyo Haha this year, its colour shifting is amazing and it's not light either, it's soft on the eyes and is very calming but it is just as easy to read as a brown ink and it has so much character. I use mine in my Noodler's Nib Creaper Truk Lagoon because of the colour and flex nib.
I think it would be really fun to do a video on the best inks for history buffs. I just feel like that might be interesting, and Noodler's in particular has a lot of history/culture-related inks.
❤️❤️❤️ I remember the first video I watched with Goulet pens. I only had a preppy.2 years ago.😂 I just got curious. And your channel became my guide. Now I own a preppy and a plaisir, Pilot Petit and a prera, Twsbi 2ecos, 2 minis. ❤️
I grabbed samples of all the dual-shading Sailor inks and they look gorgeous! Cant wait for school to start again so I can use them. Nitrogen is also a staple for me but it’s so finicky (hard starter, never seems to dry down all the way, super moisture sensitive) although I’ve learned the trick of adding a couple drops of distilled water to help with some of the issues without sacrificing the sheen
Along with Diamine Sapphire Blue, Oxblood was one of the first inks I ever bought. I like it, but I wish it were a little lighter; I've only used it with a fine nib though.
You should see if the College of William and Mary would buy the Vert Atlántide in bulk. School seal is green, gold and silver and W&M is 327 years old -almost as old as J Herbin.
I ordered a bottle of red dragon. Should be arriving tomorrow. I got it over oxblood because it isn’t as dark. Both look like amazing inks, I’m excited to use it.
Beautiful Sailor Studio inks. So subtle, gently, elegant they are... Nytrogen, as much interesting it is, I would never try because of its high maintenance. Oxblood I have ordered and still have to try; but let me tell that this kind of red ink is one of my favorite ones. I use Burgundy, from Mont Blanc, which falls into the same category as the Oxblood. Thank you as usual.
I built up quite an ink collection this year, a lot from Goulet Pens. At the beginning I thought oranges were my favorite, and I've discovered that Noodler's El Lawrence is actually my favorite ink, if I could only choose one. Interesting how that works out. So I'm with Drew in the El Lawrence camp.
@@djryandelap I don't know whether it's my possible partial colour blindness (difficulties differentiating some reds and oranges), but what I really enjoy about Ancient Copper is that - to me - it's almost a dark red. I see it described as brown and I get that, but it dances the line wonderfully for me. It feels very work-appropriate too. Another excellent one is Rohrer+Klingner Verdigris. A different family but also worksafe for a colour that could be in different camps. I'd recommend highly to check that out.
I will have to check that one out. I used Diamine Emerald and Poppy Red for my Christmas cards this year.....I've never actually bought a bottle of Monteverde ink before, I've come close many times but always ended up choosing something different. I will have to give the brand a go this year.
I really like Waterman Harmonious Green. It's just the right balance between bright and dark and behaves really well with different kinds of paper. I use it mostly with a Kakuno fine.
@@ym10up - It's funny you mention that one. I just recently purchased harmonious green along with tender purple. I found them both really nice inks visually and found them both to perform very well in my flex pens. (Noodlers Konrad & FPR Himalaya v2 w/ultra flex). I have had flow problems in the past with certain ink brands but have found both Diamine and Waterman to be quite good on that front. I just recently received a bottle of Lamy Turmaline as well and it's also a great ink. I find it to be very similar to Diamine Aurora Borealis which has been one of my favourite inks for quite a while. I also found the turmaline to flow well in my flex pens which is more than I can say for other Lamy colours I have tried like Mango which I had an awful time with. I appreciate the reply and I hope you had a good New Year.....Take care.
Just in case anyone likes the manyo, haha and wants something like it but a bit more saturated; I recently got a bottle of Graff von Faber-Castel Violet blue gifted to me, and it is gorgeous and a pretty good approximation (plus saturation).
I like the Oxblood, but it's a little too red for my everyday work. I prefer the Syrah because the maroon doesn't yell like red. I can still use a red ink to highlight important notes, even against the Syrah. Current favorite, though, is Robert Oster Torquay.....
I absolutely love OS Nitrogen. The supplies have been a bit short of that one, though. Its hard to find. But I love it just a bit more than I hate it. You're right, Brian, it gets everywhere and never ever dries! But its worth it, for me. I'm surprised to not see Lamy Azurite, Heart of darkness and Apache sunset there. But you have the data so you know better. Wondering if people are still working through their bottles of apache and HoD bought in 2019 😜
The name ‘BayState Blue’ by Noodlers will forever be in my memory. Nothing really special about this ink. But I overturned a 3 oz bottle on my desk. It ran in my desk drawers, always there to remind me. Oh, also my pants and hands. LoL It wears well and for a long time.
Since TWSBI pens can be taken apart easily for cleaning, I usually use them for the sheening inks. But you do have to be vigilant with your cleaning routine. If you’d rather not risk it, get a Wing Sung 3013/Paili 013. They are cheap, but are vacuum fillers and very reliable writers. If you are unsure of vac fillers, try any of the Wing Sung piston fillers or the Jinhao if you want to use a nib bigger than a fine.
I don't know about top 5 or ten, but I can say that Diamine Marine is a great looking color that I just recently discovered that looks really great! - Drew
I've been buying inks, pens and paper from Goulet Pens since I discovered fountain pens 3 years ago. WriteGear carries about 60% of the catalog of Goulet Pens, so many of the nicer ink and pen brands I only buy from Goulet Pen. I've previously bought directly from a manufacturer but never again. I prefer to get my gear from companies like Goulet Pens and WriteGear. When buying at Goulet just choose the FedEx option at checkout and they'll deliver to your door. The shipping cost is well worth it. Also the packaging from Goulet Pens is top-notch. Just budget another R750 for custom tax & fees when the package reaches SA borders.
Maybe also try Applebee. They’re sometimes cheaper than WriteGear, though WriteGear does more effort with their presentation (hand written thank you notes and such)
The Diamine Oxblood is the first ink I ever bought. I keep a bottle of it always. It's one of my faves. I think it's because I'm a lefty and it happens to dry pretty quickly. Also, I grade papers, and the Oxblood is just the right amount of traumatic for final essays.
Haha, yes, as a fellow paper grader, I confess to picking my ink colors for marking papers based on how I want those comments to come across.
"The right amount of traumatic" I am DEAD! 🤣💀
Your comment brought a smile to my lips. Lol.

Oxblood is the BEST red ink because it's the closest out there to writing in blood, DUHHH. Sincerely, the goths.
Makes my transparent TWSBI Eco look like a syringe :)
Edit: Just had a look and I bought Ruby, not oxblood
I actually think Red Dragon is closer to writing in blood while Ancient Copper is the closest I've seen to dried blood on paper or clothes.
Exactly what I wanted to say! It feels like writing with blood and who doesn't like the Gothic vibe that gives!
Try writers blood it spooks my wife when I fill or clean it
Your sample of the Oxblood makes me think of the red velvet seats and the curtains that used to hang in the old grand movie theaters of years past (think 30's, 40's and into the 50's). A rich but not overpowering color.
I agree, I tried it this December and I'm going to get some. It seems to have history behind it.

Adding Sailor Manyo Shirakashi and Manyo Nekoyanagi to my wishlist on Goulet right now!
Drew should now think up bizarre names for all Sailor Ink Studio inks.
When he talked about #123 and all the directions that it went in I would name it "Confusion"

I keep thinking, there's space in the color square to put a name, like a convention badge. Sailor Ink Studio "Tristan" 123, or "Albert" 452.
When it comes to Diamine inks, I have a bottle of Ox Blood and do like it but I find myself continually going back to Ancient Copper as my go to Diamine ink. I absolutely love that colour. Aurora Borealis is also a stand out for me in the Diamine line.

I use Cobalt Jazz in my ocean blue Lamy Al-Star. No probs, knock on wood.,
Sailor to other ink companies, "So, you've learnt how to make ink. Let's step up the game." And Pilot be like, "Kids!"
when y'all gonna release another this or that?
Drew needs to try Sailor Ink Studio 950. If you want dark, that’s it. I put it in my Sailor Wicked Witch of the West pen. Very cool!
I've only just begun exploring ink.
Looking forward to the 2022 version of this ink video.
❤️❤️❤️
I remember the first video I watched with Goulet pens. I only had a preppy.2 years ago.😂 I just got curious. And your channel became my guide.
Now
I own a preppy and a plaisir,
Pilot Petit and a prera,
Twsbi 2ecos, 2 minis. ❤️
Here's an idea for a limited edition, commemorative in for 2020: Covidverse 2020 - Safe for all fountain pens and can be used as a hand sanitizer.
I discovered Noodlers Rome Burning this year from a sampler pack from you guys and fell in love with it. So unique!
Maiahee maiahoo maihaa, Manyo HAHA!
Nekoyanagi is my faaaaaaavorite.
they just sold me 3 inks and a platinum preppy
haha, well I hope you like them! -Brian
@@Gouletpens I can't wait, only took me a trip to the bank to get my debit card working again lol
I am just crazy about ink pen bottles. I could start a collection.
Cobalt Jazz. Can't live without it.
This is a great channel!
They are very nice to sketch with and I use water to wash out. To great effect..
I love the O.S. Nitrogen and I need to try the Jacque Herbin. I haven’t tried any of the Sailor inks, but obviously need to!
I bought oxblood to go in my white jinhoa shark pen. Looks awesome!
Oxblood is one of my favourites, as is Ancient Copper. Red Dragon is excellent but those other two have the edge for me.
+1 on the ancient copper. I had some fun changing colors to accent seasonal themes this year, and Ancient Copper was my go-to for fall.
@@bikkies thanks for the tip! That’s definitely an interesting color - that fade from green to gray is pretty striking!
@@djryandelap Yes it is a somewhat unique ink and the name feels very fitting. Hope you enjoy it.
I have sailor 162 and I love it!
I found that Monteverde California Teal really popped on quality paper for my Christmas letters.
@@SnaykEyes77 oh I can't agree with you more about Diamine and Waterman. Have fun writing and happy New Year to you too!!
I too was attracted by the siren songs of the Diamine Oxblood, but when writing with it I wondered why I did not choose the Red Dragon better.
54th Massachusetts is still my favorite
I prefer Oxblood over Red Dragon. I find OxBlood to just be richer. FYI, I do prefer a more muted palette. Thx for all the great vids!!
Just in case anyone likes the manyo, haha and wants something like it but a bit more saturated; I recently got a bottle of Graff von Faber-Castel Violet blue gifted to me, and it is gorgeous and a pretty good approximation (plus saturation).
Darn you Brian and Drew... I just added new inks to my Goulet wish list! Thank you?? ;)
I really think it’s something special. No other blue like it. But I’m certainly careful to pick a safe pen to use it!
@@quix66hiya22 I like it also.
@@quix66hiya22 It is a go to ink for me and is in a Pilot Metropolitan with stub nib dedicated to it and is an every day carry pen.
It’ s such an electric blue!
Diamine Matador is my favorite red other than Sheaffer Skrip Red. I love solid true reds more than darker blood/Bordeaux reds! 🙂
For the record, Diamine Wild strawberry is the best red 🍓 😜
Gotta get me some Ha Ha.
Diamine Oxblood is the color of the soul of 2020. Bloody 2020. argh
Yeeessss! I was hoping for this!
I bought the OS Nitrogen and Drew filled my order. Thanks Drew. Should I not use it in my Twsbi Eco pens??
Since TWSBI pens can be taken apart easily for cleaning, I usually use them for the sheening inks. But you do have to be vigilant with your cleaning routine. If you’d rather not risk it, get a Wing Sung 3013/Paili 013. They are cheap, but are vacuum fillers and very reliable writers. If you are unsure of vac fillers, try any of the Wing Sung piston fillers or the Jinhao if you want to use a nib bigger than a fine.
@@pat412pear thanks so much for the great advice. Happy New Year.
I really want to hear more about the new colors from de atramentis document line. New hot colors for 2021?
I got a bottle of Haha for Christmas 2020, ive been loving using it with my architect.
What are the best 5 or 10 Diamine inks for shading?
I don't know about top 5 or ten, but I can say that Diamine Marine is a great looking color that I just recently discovered that looks really great! - Drew
I do love the studio series. My fav is 162..
I wish we could get all these inks in South Africa.
Try "Write Gear" in Cape Town. They are pretty good esp for Diamine. Or Lamy Shop SA online for Lamy ink & pens
They’re sometimes cheaper than WriteGear, though WriteGear does more effort with their presentation (hand written thank you notes and such)
I enjoyed Diamine Oxblood but since I discovered J. Herbin Rouge Grenat it has been my goto red ink
