I'm just a beginner to carving and sharpening. I've struggled with sharpening my Flexcut carving knives but thanks to your two videos I think I finally have a technique that works! Thanks so much and now back to the stones.
just a bit of info for anyone who is interested. the green compound from Veritas is approximately 15000 grit (as too is autosol metal polish), i can notice the difference in mirror finish above that left from my shapton 12000 stone.
Great vid. Just subscribed. Could you please show how to add a micro bevel at the edge. I have been raising the spine just a bit on the strop and doing a few firm strokes, hopefully to add a micro but am not sure if this is correct. Thanks.
I follow my 16,000 shapton with a strop charged with green compound and see a different, particularly with straight razors but plane blades etc... too. I understand there is some variability with green compound grit size but I’m surprised you don’t find much difference. Excellent video though thanks. Chisels, planes, drawknives I’ve found are largely easy, even cambered irons but it’s taken me lots of practice to sharpen knives with comfort.
In my experience there really is no need to load so much compound. A little bit works better. Just because the naked eye can't see .5 micron it doesn't mean it's not there. Stropping results are on a microscopic level. More about s not better.
Nice video. Very well presented

some soft woods work very nice for stropping.
