Ah just eye water ah run down...Lived in Nigeria and always wondered what the A class Studio ( fashion ) looked like. I remember sending Asher Senator a letter from Nigeria as a kid and he sent me 2 records Bubble with I and Car Auction. Those records with Asher's autograph made me an instant STAR in the growing reggae circle in Nigeria. We were influenced heavily by de Saxon MC's. I DJ'd under de name Shinan Irie and my older brother de selector Daddy Faizer looked up to Trevor Ranking. There was another sound in Nigeria at the time apart from our sound REALITEE. There were known as Daddy C Champion Bubblers - Colonel Leslie, Papa Dee and de greatest Nigerian selector de Late Great Ricky Zansky ( R. I. P) de way yu used to mix me made my lyrics flow endlessly.
Dope vibes, your story reminds me of a group of bredrens I know from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe in the late 80s dem used to be known as Arize Afrika, Ras Sly, Ras KD, Ras Adristo , rest in power Maan Willie (R.I.P) , Mante, Agrippa Nuff selectors dem from Bulawayo, Mpopoma . First time I see and hear Smiley culture LP from dem bredrens dem , Zimbabwe was the place to be. This brings distant memories of good old days. Arize Afrika had sessions every weekend from one back yard to back yard over at KD's place or Adristo . Dem bredrens had a mad collection of Strictly roots reggae LPs before CDs and Cassettes back in dem days. This amazing to come across in this time. Peace
All I have to say, respect for putting this up on UA-cam. Also, big respect to Chris Lane, the late great Smiley Culture and all the Fashion crew. This is a piece of British urban history that needs to be seen.
Great days these at Dub Vendor, still an online a Reggae dealer, Chris Lane is now a cabbie, Donald "Papa Face" still works with David Rodigan. Maxi Priest, massive superstar, Smiley Culture RIP. Note the great chalk handwriting on the shop blackboard by Noel Hawks. Bumped into Alton Ellis one Saturday afternoon in Dub Vendor, top man, really friendly, what a privilege!
Maximum respect to Fashion Records! Personally for me you were one of the most important points in shaping the vision of what dancehall music can be. So as for so many more people during 4 decades... I started the series of mixes called Different Fashion: it's a reference to Fashion Records as well as meaning of experimental approach to dub & reggae music ('inna different style and different fashion', you know). Love to Fashion Records & Dub Vendor from Russia!
OMG the flushing toilet sound at 1:45. Back in the day in Britain it was believed that reggae was written in the toilet. That's how it was introduced on the radio in the 1950s or 1960s by some old English guy.
I'm sure they didn't mean any disrespect, and despite the prejudice against it I don't think anyone seriously thought that 'reggae was written in the toilet' .... the voicing room did actually used to be a toilet, that's why they put that sound effect in ....
wow historic footage i always ask me how looks fashion studios, and know i have a small idea, i like to see some clip of making riddims in this studio!
I have been searchin for an old reggae song for years now. It has the lyrics "up to date get yourself up to date cos great is great, great shouldnt underate, badness, badness a madness" does anybody out there know this song and who did it???
