Only heard about him after his death. He was an incredible talent. ‘Police Officer’ was great but this is genius in the way it translates between two marginalised dialects/languages and has a lot of fun with it, and also compares the ‘underworld’ in different cultures. ‘Dem say Old Bill/We say Dutty Babylon!’
Not true, Allen & Blewitt - Chip Shop Wrapping and David Baird - Friday Neet (Gannin Tapping In The Toon). Both songs from 1980, they used British accents. Barnsley Bill - Barnsley Rap & Barnsley Bill - Wedding Rap from 1981 as well. They were the first MC's to use British accents on a track. However, they were novelty songs that didn't have a lasting impact, unlike "Cockney Translation".
To CJ Run: Speaking of the British v Jamaican Accent and parlances. Interesting in that era, closer to the real old-time Cockney; now today's "Cockney" isn't purely so -- it's rummaged in with the Jam-African mix-up. When they do speak London, they sound West Indian.
@@summerteeethYou're not a middle class white girl with a social sciences degree from a coastal US university who has never stepped foot in a predominantly black area are you? It's just that folks who go around telling people of colour what racism is tend to conform to the above description is all.
@@CycolacFan you're refering to the date of his dead. i thought you meant the release of the song. That was sad, hard to believe he stabbed himself, like the official claim stated.
The 80s was good. The sounds coming out of saxon in London with smiley culture, asher senator, papa levi , tippa irie were trend setting we used have yhe cassette tapes. And Barrington levy from Jamaica. It all influenced the rappers.
Love the 'arm(ed) robbery' reference and the Venus de Milo image. The video was very witty. Loved this when it first came out all those years ago! RIP Smiley.
Truth will out, hopefully, whatever that may be,though it won't bring him back. This song and Police Officer brought me much amusement back in early 1985. RIP.
Be good to hear from any of the kids that were in this video. Must be all as old as me now. Anyone out there wanna tell us making this film with Smiley?
Just read about this in Hugh Hodges' book about the Thatcher era, The Fascist Groove Thing, here on stolen land (otherwise known as Australia). The praise given to music and artist are spot on!
I don't believe in conspiracy theories. So it's almost certain he died as they said. But I still want a public enquiry. He was Smiley fucking Culture ffs.

@@eddyvideostar Today's London dialect is MLE, Multicultural London English, which is heavily rooted in Jamaican English

Thank you for your reply: Appreciated it.
It's NOT a British accent darling, the cockney dialect used by all who were born or raised in London.
