We just drove it last week in a rented Dodge Charger - no problem at all. You just need patience with oncoming cars; however, there are pullouts. Everyone you meet has a smile on their face because they're going through the same thing. We asked the lady at the national park and she said she drives her Camry on that stretch all the time - that's what gave us the confidence to do it. In fact, we had the choice of some big SUV's at the rental car place and I'm glad I didn't take them - it would have been harder to get by some folks. You really only have 10 miles of rough road and 2-3 miles of one-lane road to deal with. But, beautiful views and, a time or two, we were the only people around for certainly a mile or two.
Yeah it’s really not bad at all. I think the negative stories come from those not accustomed to off-road driving. We had a great time on this side of the island and we plan on doing it again next time.
I agree! In terms of danger and challenge it isn’t bad…but I’m comfortable with stuff like that. My wife on the other hand HATES roads like that and is a bundle of nerves the whole way. I’d love to check out BC some day…looks beautiful!
Awesome vid! My wife and I drove that road the way to Hana (took the actual road to Hana on the way back). We were in a small rental car lmao I white knuckled most of that drive and the road was abnormally busy so those 1 lane roads were stressful. Beautiful scenery though and this video reminded me of that.
Hey thank you! Yeah it’s a fun road…and surprisingly doable in a small car if you are patient! Glad you got to experience that side of the island…it’s incredible. Thanks for watching!
Thank you! A regular car would make it but I’d be extremely careful with the bumps...and maybe be prepared to change a flat. I’ve done worse in a car but I don’t necessarily recommend it.
Aww, I just did the road to Hana and back yesterday. I only went to hike the Pipiwai falls this time and drove back through Hana. Last time, in 2019, I wandered through a few falls and the Lava tube, and back out the backside. Never thought to drive it in the direction you took. Maybe next year, yet I said never again yesterday. Sounds like a fun trip! PS-did that backside several times before and your videos really captured the beauty more than I remember!
So yeah it’ll take you about 2 hours to get to Haleakala on the coast…but the rough part lasts about maybe 30-40 minutes. It’s not bad as long as you take it easy.
Its so green. Amazing.

Ridiculous question. Drove it at least 20 times. Go slow and enjoy the scenery. Stop at the Kaupo grocery store for a snack.
We did it in a convertible. Insane scenery. Road was close 3\4 way through. Had to go back.
Just did this today, piece of cake 🍰, BC 🇨🇦 logging roads are sketchy, you should try it out sometime.

Did not drive the back road but stayed in Hana for 3 days. Amazing place.
Yes it is! That whole island is absolutely amazing. I would have loved to stay in Hana…I bet that was great!

Idk how there were never any cars! For us it was extremely nervewracking and a honkfest but we made through the backside.. twice
It's closed so can't do it at the moment.
Great video. Do you think a regular car would make that route as well?

What do you do on those narrow parts and curves if another car is coming is there enough room to pull over to let one another through?
You have to hug one side or reverse back. Thats why locals hate when tourists who have NO IDEA what there doing drive back side.😂

Hey thank you very much! I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Sounds like you’ve had some great trips out there! I’m hoping we can make it back to Maui soon!
Just did it. You didn't cross one car on your trip?
This was a much different road in the 90s.
How many hours of rough driving would you say it took to get back to smooth roads again?
lol 2-3 hours..drove there last Nov

To be fair there are no intoxicated Pigs 🐖 in BC.
Haha true! Truly a unique sighting for sure!
