Georgian here… I love North Dakota! Thanks for posting. ❤❤❤❤ I am amazed by how fast the tractor goes and then stops on a dime when the baler is full ! AWESOME!!
The problem with regular balers is there's only so much power you can shove through the PTO because of the torque and shear standards. The HD large square balers use the inertia of a flywheel to get more umph into the plunger but the tractor still has to replace that by spinning the flywheel back up. Krone has a design that uses both hydro flow AND PTO to power up a baler with a hydraulic low end booster on the system to get the wheel spinning and keep it from stalling. The old Hesston/Massey units down in the south-west that have on-baler engines are true beasts because of this. Self-powered Freeman 3-string not-so-small balers really hammer out bales too.
As a non agricultural schooled person; is there a lot of power loss in a PTO? or is there a maximum limit what it can crank out powerwise? Is either of those because there are 2 seperate units in a towed baler versus a selfpropelled unit? Isn't the engine in the selfpropelled ZR5 doing the same thing; powering the vehicle and the baling system just in 1 unit?
@@boristhebarbarian there’s no inertia issue on a round baler so it’s easy enough driven that issue mentioned above is large square balers due to the working principle.
@@MrT79shakeshake So round balers have a more steady workflow in their workings due to continuous compacting instead of squarebalers push-release (like an automotive engine)methode? Have the squarebalers only been more market dominant because of moving and stacking the bales then?
Theres another ZR5 in south central north dakota, sometimes see it going during the summer about 4 miles east of my farm. Vermeer has gotten extremely popular in the last 5 years in the region... normally see usual guys running JD or NH balers all their life, and all of a sudden they have a Vermeer now.

Great video! I have only seen the self propelled baler in Farming Simulator. Great to see one actually working and to hear why some farmers prefer it over a trailed version. If you have a lot of land to cover it makes sense to me! 👍 Thanks for sharing! 😎
Many many years ago I saw some "top 10 farming machines" video that featured a self propeled round balers. Haven't seen one since. Fun to come across one again.
Great video, Mike. Both balers working together in the same field. I like the idea that the power unit part and the baler part can be separated on the SP baler for maintenance.
My son just purchased a 605N. It was impressive. I was baling wheat and was curious about how fast the baler would bale. I'm baling with a JD 8300. I was up to 12.7 mph and according to the monitor, I was dropping a bale every 55 to 56 seconds. This baler was impressive. I started out with a 605C. I owned a 605G, 605J, 605SuperJ , 605L.
I like the mischievious foxes at the end. Hopefully you will continue to ad fun bonusmaterial like that in the future. It makes for a pleasant interlude from a very informative video.
Wow that’s awesome that the S.P. can go twice as fast! I can see why they are selling then for sure! I am not a arm chair City Boy, born and raised on the farm and worked on round and square balers all my life at a dealer that carried Hesston and New Holland iron. But we don’t have a Vermeer dealership around here so very interesting video Mike! Thanks!
Be interesting to see if they ever go to 4 wider belts on the chamber the way Deere and agco have gone. They seem to be a big improvement. Also would be interesting to test against a pull type round baler with a true CVT/ hydrostatic type tranny in a 200 plus horse tractor like a JCB with an operator who knows how to run it. Also interesting if Vermeer ever intends to offer a 4 ft wide bale chamber for the self propelled.
This is the first time I have seen a self propelled baler. I can not under stand why no one has made them before now. we done see them here in Northern British Columbia
When I first saw that bailer hauling butt down the field I was amazed. Time is money. Speed it up by increasing ground speed, eliminate manual function by using automation and you have a winner.
I wonder if putting tandem axles on the self-propelled baler would make it a smoother riding and lower ground pressure. The tires would need to be smaller.
hi, nice machine, you show it nicely, but..... what I don't see is how much is left at that speed?? does the pickup have enough time to feed in all the hay properly? does the rotor speed increase/decrease with the driving speed? you have to leave the land clean to get the highest possible yield/ha.
I remember when the round baler came out it must have been 70 or 71 our neighbor got a dealership before that he was running a Heston stackhand and everyone else was running f10 farmands
Seeing the foxes and this video featuring making hay reminds me of "Fox" brand silage equipment back in the 1950s. What ever happened to the Fox company ? Merger I suppose.
The self-propelled unit is a very impressive machine but I have questions. How is it able to operate so much faster than a pull type? You mentioned that it can bail at up to 12mph. How fast can you go when using the pull type? Also how did they make the wrapping/unloading process so much faster? I think the big square bales are more efficient. No need to stop to unload and no wasted space on the truck when hauling them. Are there disadvantages of square bales I do not know about?
the round bale is the more efficient bale. from a farmers perspective. They hold more volume than a similar sized square bale. so you need to create and move fewer per field. and they are easier to create from a mechanical perspective. so round balers are smaller, cheaper and cheaper to operate, than the big square balers. people tend to make square bales for customers and contracts. but round bales to use themselves.
On the pull type baler an overhead view shows the 2 belts on the left have 2 belt end connectors instead of just one like the others. Is that a belt repair connection? Just curious. Amazing how much faster the self-propelled unit is. Great video.
Our neighbors bought one. I got to ride in the training seat for a few rounds. This hay field was not leveled in any way but the ride was really good in my opinion. The front suspension has very good travel and I have no complaints about the ride. Oh, it had an automatic grease system too which I think is a great idea.
Thanks again for the great videos Mike! These keyboard cowboys are ruining UA-cam with stupid comments it's a problem on every channel I'm subscribed to if you can't say something nice don't say anything
With Lely being bought by AGCO, I have no idea how it got handled... no word on anything in years. During that merger, some of the Massey balers were essentially a Vermeer with Lely, but not sure what it's like now.
I don't no why thay don't take it a step further and include continue to bale technology as well as plastic rap as a option. Big farmers need big equipment.😓😓😓😓😓

It's great to see the innovative self propelled design from Vermeer working out in real life applications!
Wow, the self-propelled Baylor sure goes fast 😳. Happy subscriber 😊!
... and here I thought Redd Foxx was dead. Cool video of the balers and the foxes Mike. My dad always loved Vermeer balers.

Smart machine at its work
Great to see
I wish i would work on farmlands like this!!!
The driver of the John Deere must have been very frustrated:
"Damn! He's been overtaking me for 125 times, now!" 😉
Thanks a lot for the video! 😊👍🏻
That’s an impressive machine. It’s really moving out there! Great video as always!

Farming simulator 22 player here. That's where I learned about it. Just as fast in game as it is here. Very cool stuff
Seeing is believing! Great presentation!
Many many years ago I saw some "top 10 farming machines" video that featured a self propeled round balers. Haven't seen one since. Fun to come across one again.
that self-propelled unit is really amazing you would need a sizeable farm to justify ir or be a custom operator fun to watch
Haven’t seen a self propelled Baler even at our farm show yet. Great video
Never made a round bale. I really miss making hay. Excellent videos man thank you.
That's the perfect bailer. Get twice as many bails in less time that's a winner.
Great video, Mike. Both balers working together in the same field.
I like the idea that the power unit part and the baler part can be separated on the SP baler for maintenance.
Dang farming has come so far past twenty years. Loving it
The Vermeer 605n is pretty awesome too
amazing machines and excellent camera work. Thanks Mike!!!

Mike is that ZR5 is very cool round baler I like it that is very fast work of the hay
Great to see the self propelled baler at work😉👍 great video👍👍

Saw my first one a couple days ago around Strathmore, AB Had to slow down and watch it for a couple minutes.
Awesome video thanks Mike as always
Love these machines. Been waiting for more videos since their release and as always FHM delivers!
The self propelled bailer is the way to go. I'm sure other Ag companies will follow suit. Very cool Mike 👍🏻 😊.
This is so awesome! Slow down buddy! 😮

This is one Awsome looking machine. I could see how it can bale fast then the pull type
This is the first time I have seen a self propelled baler. I can not under stand why no one has made them before now. we done see them here in Northern British Columbia
That is one cool baler!!!
Loved the foxes. Haters will hate. Keep up the great videos.
Thanks Mike for another great video. Dont listen or mention the idiots posts just...keep making your videos and 99% will enjoy them!
When I first saw that bailer hauling butt down the field I was amazed. Time is money. Speed it up by increasing ground speed, eliminate manual function by using automation and you have a winner.
Vermeer makes a good hay roller, and I can see the self propelled is hauling tail, like to have one in 4 wheel drive
Great Video. Would like to see these in person.
The self propelled baler certainly makes the trailed machine look slow.
Great. Well done.
Good video.
Great idea
I wonder if putting tandem axles on the self-propelled baler would make it a smoother riding and lower ground pressure. The tires would need to be smaller.
That baler was sure fast.
I was hoping you would run into one of these SP balers some time.
Have you seen the Vermeer baler that constantly bales. Ejects bale without stopping
I like Mike less videos on UA-cam from the imperial county California 👍🚜🚜🚜🚜🚜
I don't know about others but I'd love a go though it would be tight around some of our lanes.
Did you now that deutz made a self propelt sqare baler in the 90s its called power press
hi, nice machine, you show it nicely, but..... what I don't see is how much is left at that speed?? does the pickup have enough time to feed in all the hay properly? does the rotor speed increase/decrease with the driving speed? you have to leave the land clean to get the highest possible yield/ha.

I think they are cool just wish they were 4 wheel drive with a rake on front.
Is it a pain to put net wrap in, or did they move it to the door?
The stop is "only" 15 seconds, but I'm still amazed they didn't put a prechamber into the self-propelled baler.
nice machine.

I would guess if it has two splices that belt was repaired at some point.
I got to ride in the one by Wahpeton . Sure can cover the ground.
The self-propelled takes about half. The time to dump a bale as the other one.
Mike thanks
Looks impressive!!!! How does it ride going down the fields that fast, it looks kinda bounce with all that weight hanging over there rear axle??
Our neighbors bought one. I got to ride in the training seat for a few rounds. This hay field was not leveled in any way but the ride was really good in my opinion. The front suspension has very good travel and I have no complaints about the ride.
Oh, it had an automatic grease system too which I think is a great idea.
At 1.5 to 1.75 wraps on my 68" its 9 seconds clutch to clutch, yeah the ZR5 was defo blasting down the field faster than the Deere
I usually setup course play to bale and follow me to pick up the bales.
Great video Mike just ignore the loons who do stupid comments
I’m thinking it might be possible to replace the baler if worn out while keeping the power unit?
There’s only one problem I see that is I don’t make enough hay to afford one!😂
Did you see Salem Sue while you were out there? 🙂
Now that’s really neat
Looks realy rough ground that sp baler going to shack the crap out of that back kicker
Thanks again for the great videos Mike! These keyboard cowboys are ruining UA-cam with stupid comments it's a problem on every channel I'm subscribed to if you can't say something nice don't say anything
What size paddock and how many bales?
I wonder if it has chopping knives
Bet all the western hay growers want a ZR5 1200 bailer, what power runs it?
Would there be much difference in bale weight between the pull type baler and the self propelled?
So did vermeer give up on the protocol type of the continuous round baler that they where working on in the past 3 years?
I think that this prototype was built in partnership with Lely but since the Lely forage line has been sold to Agco this project faded away
With Lely being bought by AGCO, I have no idea how it got handled... no word on anything in years. During that merger, some of the Massey balers were essentially a Vermeer with Lely, but not sure what it's like now.
Could you make the baler pull tupe if the tractor part went down
I suppose anything is possible but not sure there is a kit to do just that.
Do you have to zig zag with a self propelled baler
Like you have to with a pull behind baler
It's the same . doesn't matter if pull type or SP
@@freebooter247 ok thanks for the update
I've always wondered why some farmers do round bales and some do square bales?
Round baler are quite a bit cheaper and I’d say a lot less maintenance Round bales also weather a lot better when stored outside
I don't know why people want to be so negative now and throw their opinion when more than likely they don't even know what their talking about.
I don't no why thay don't take it a step further and include continue to bale technology as well as plastic rap as a option. Big farmers need big equipment.😓😓😓😓😓
Not like there's any hills for the bails to roll down their.
