After weeks of crying, being scared, pissed off .... this was what I needed to see. I lived in West Hollywood at the time and Ellen really hit the mark.
"They can't take away our creativity, our striving for excellence, our joy. Only network executives can do that." LOL! XD Ellen knows a thing or two about that.
6:00 Ellen: _"What would bug the Taliban more than seeing a gay woman in a suit surrounded by Jews."_ Joke of the night ladies and gentlemen. Ellen always knowing how to put a smile up peoples faces.
I don't always watch movies, or follow award shows, but this was one performance I will never forget. I just started thinking about this and wanted to make sure that people just finding this now (especially our newest Americans who came to be with us since this happened) know that as a nation, we learned to laugh again when she came out in that dress and just stood there looking out at everyone. She gave back something important that we had lost for a couple of weeks, and it helped us remember that we could recover and be joyful again. I cant think of another time a comedian and a silent joke ever meant so much. God bless this woman, and our people. All of them.
Of course they picked Ellen to host this award show! Who else can make people smile, even if it's just for a couple of hours, and help them forget what is going on? She is the best! I wish she would host more shows like this!
That was so masterful. She warmed them up slowly to earn their support and to assure them she was going to be gentle. Then when she gets them to the right point, she gives them a joke that allows them to really laugh. Hard. It set the tone for the rest of the show. It may be the example of hosting an awards show, especially under difficult circumstances. She was like Bugs Bunny as the Conductor of the opera singer. Brilliant.
So glad this was posted! I have it on video somewhere in storage. Ellen was incredible... She should have been able to be nominated for an Emmy for host, but Emmy hosts cannot be considered for Emmy awards.
Your amazing Ellen DeGeneres. I was watching you as host for the Emmy Awards way back in 2001. The day you make the decision to leave your talk show I will miss you so very much Ellen DeGeneres
I love Ellen and her show which I am so glad we get in the UK. However, Ellen on this night after 9/11, your humour and tact here might be your finest moment. Even more so than the episode Ellen came out, which also managed to be the funniest episode. On this night thought, Ellen was wonderful when it was needed. cblondemonger thanks for this reminder of Ellen's warmth but humour at this time when we needed it
lol why are their 2 of the same comments and the one that was posted up first by like a year has less comments then the one that was posted later?.lol wow thats just sad..
9.11 happened that year and Emmy was postponed twice. She was hosting the first public celebration event after a traumatic event. This background knowledge will help with the understanding the gravity and jokes of the opening monologue. In one word: her monologue made it OK to joke again after national trauma.
"Only network executives can do that" hahhaha the BEST line ever considering what they did to Ellen. That's hilarious.
6:05 best line ever . in the time of despair what a way to bring people out of that . love you ellen and she met portia in 2003
Yeah, that had you going on a roll.
"A gay woman in a suit surrounded by Jews"!!!!

Hahaha hilarious!
good one!
Her smile and joy. Ellen my love. It is 2022 today, come back to yourself Ellen.

Joke of the century

i like how the camera immediately zooms in on ben stiller's dad RIGHT when she says that hahaha

What a perfect way to end this emee with the the greatest voice in the world 🌎. God bless the victims and families of 9/11 ❤

She rocked that. She totally rocked it!
I remember this so well. it was heartwarning and sooo comforting in an unknown time

She is just so Precious:)
I actually like her style more back in the early 2000's.
So glad this was posted! I have it on video somewhere in storage. Ellen was incredible... She should have been able to be nominated for an Emmy for host, but Emmy hosts cannot be considered for Emmy awards.
This sentence is there for eternity! WONDERFUL!!!
Brilliant, adorable, funny, an American treasure!
"Only network executives can do that!" kekeke
LOVEEEE Ellen
She is just wonderful.
I love that after she said the baseball game wouldn't break in and tell them who won that FOX actually put a scroller up to do just that.
Finally! Thanks :)
6:01 BRILLIANT! Ellen should have gotten an award (if the Emmys handed out hosting awards for their own shows).
Ellen beautiful👏👏👏👏👏
amo a ellen me encanta esta mina me acuerdo que yo vi este show en vivo y que fue genial
Oh Ellen can make anyone laugh!
Your amazing Ellen DeGeneres. I was watching you as host for the Emmy Awards way back in 2001. The day you make the decision to leave your talk show I will miss you so very much Ellen DeGeneres

I love Ellen!
YES! YES! YES!
thank you!
Ellen's opening line at 2:06. I remember how that joke made me fall down laughing as it broke the huge tension surrounding this.
Why she wasn't cast as Lady Di in one of the movie about her? She looks totally similar.
Oh this is great :)
You can't trust anything on network TV today. I miss Cronkite.
She looks freaking adorable!
she needs to host awards more often
Neat that they showed Calista Flockhart and Rob Lowe back to back when Ellen walked out and they now play a married couple on Brothers & Sisters!
It's Rebel Rebel by David Bowie.
SHEEE LOOOKSS SOOOO YOUNG DANGG
6:01. What would bug the Taliban more than seeing a gay woman in a suit surrounded by Jews.
I am not a gay. But I found Ellen Degeneres is a very attractive, charming, amiable person. She works wishfully and successfully.
Thanks :D
Epic!
What was that song at the end of that first bit she was hosting of the fashion show?
Do you know where I can watch the entire 2001 emmys?
Never heal....
I just love how she already shut down the audience with her second line. The only thing that didn't get a laugh was 'Hello and welcome' lol.
エレンハンサムすぎるー
Rebel, Rebel - David Bowie
what time are those words? i seem to miss them
noo...this is 11 years ago
What was the first show?
Fashion Rocks ?
this is the year she met portia
@TheJayit thanks mate. thats the one.
@wl03bu It was because the emmys was rescheduled twice that year before finally airing in November due to 9.11

What would bug the Taliban more than seeing a gay woman in a suit surrounded by Jews
What does she mean by "they can't take away our creativity,.... Only networks executives can do that" and what does the guy have to do with it?
@manidar1977 Her name's Calista Flockhart :)
It has been 20 years
Wow
❤😮
1:50 is that not portia... a solid 3 whole years before they started dating.
Ohh CBS, you are good...
@CPRandRBC . Nop sir. this is that Harrison ford's chic. Ally mcbeal.(her name is very difficult. cant remember it.)
Is that Gabourey Sidibe at 8.0?? Actress nominated for an Oscar for Precious?
What do you mean?
so deep isn't it?
I don't think so, this is from 2001 so she would be younger
king of queens at 3:40 :) :)
I don't get the joke... 53rd, 54th, and 55th Emmy awards
lol why are their 2 of the same comments and the one that was posted up first by like a year has less comments then the one that was posted later?.lol wow thats just sad..
7:11 I'm doing it!!
And i don't get the one with what would bug the taliban more....
@ServantPatty november 4, 2001
The same night of the greatest Game 7 in World Series history.
Wait... wht happened tht year? Was there an attack or smthin?
Stay in school.
I think they tried to make her the scapegoat as she was talented but also unpopular as she just came out as gay
Wasn't this January of 2002? It wasn't still 2001. Unless I'm wrong.
I looked it up. The Emmy's were held on November 4, 2001. The same night of the 7th game of the World Series.
6:00
jolie fisher was so proud of ellen as an ex-co-star

How she made it with her stand up, I’ll never know
