It must have been great for the audience in Berlin who heard this Beethoven's overture live! From the explosive introduction and the sweetest string transition, I could tell the Berliner players were trying their hardest to meet Kleiber's expectation. In the end, I bet the audience didn't know how to clap after hearing such an uplifting and inspiring rendition of the Coriolan. What a tragic loss to our world that Kleiber didn't record more pieces of music.

why should they be? If they are strictly in tempo, there is no dramatic tension. But ask your conducting teacher how much he conducted really in front of an audience. Here, in spite of the fact that the chords are not right (only the last one is correct and with timpani on the beat properly), tension is incredible. Drama is HERE. This is conducting. This and Karajan's, the rest is useless.
Because he didn't want them to be perfect. He often said to the orchestra "let your neighbor come in first". The effect almost like a drum roll rather than a dry Tah.

This is a scary and precarious piece for everyone involved, and it never gets easier. Kleiber is fearless.
