- I had fun breaking down this super cool lick from master Gergo Borlai and wanted to share the process. This one was tough to get happening in terms of independence once you start tapping the left foot during it. Fun phrase! Gergo plays it as 32nd's mostly but for educational purposes I used 16ths.
Drums are Yamaha PHX.
Cymbals are Zildjian.
Filmed with an iPhone.
Recorded with mixed in Logic.
Great lick Steve. I had never heard of Gergo until this video. I love the way that you break down licks and grooves. Have enjoyed your videos since fist seeing the Blush-da video. Keep the videos coming Steve, they are a valuable resource.
Steve Holmes is in my opinion one of the best versatile drummers I’ve seen. Very underestimated.
Btw BORLAI originates from Hungary and he always makes me drum HUNGRY.
Thanks!
Buuuuuuuuuuuuu
I second that, you (Steve) are seriously one of the greatest drummers of this time no doubt! Love you brother, keep up the educational vids coming, they are priceless!!! 💯💯🙌🙏
I just discovered your channel this week, and now all of a sudden practice has once again become fun. Thanks, and keep 'em coming!
Honored, thank you.
Great lesson! Reminds me of a Gary Chaffee thing that I learned a while ago working through his linear vocabulary. Very Vinnieish! Gergo's application of it is masterful. His playing blows me away, As does yours.
I simply love your playing...and humor!! Will definitely try this. Thank you!
Not the dreaded Gergo Borlai "Limb Breaker" lesson? Good Lord, that's going to leave a mark!
Beaut
Back that thing up with a couple of Blushdas, and you could really hurt someone!
Thank you so much sir.
True fan from Thailand is here.
Great lesson. You're so good at instructing...
Favourite lick so far!
On another note... another way into this awesome lick (THANK YOU STEVE!) is L-K-L-K repeated, then L-R-K repeated, back to L-K-L-K repeated, then L-K-R-K-L-K-R-K-L repeated, then finally into the phrase. Using these ostinado's might help set up a flow into the phrase and help illustrate it's component parts.
😂👍‼️Niceness!
Steve I really dig your teaching. You go to places that are not common territories explored but they groove.
Thank you!
Almost got it.. could you please tell me the place the bass goes. How would I start the fill? R L k.....I almost got It. Thanks for the video
This Lick is Not a Toy! Great Stuff! Gergo, Unbelievable! You're No Slouch Either!
Great lesson and another one to get my head around and learn ...... why do you keep doing this to me
Interesting. I had a great drum tutor 40 years ago who used to give us these drills. He played them like a boss funny how stuff really hasn't moved on that much. Easier to access tutorials like this which is very cool.
Man I wish you had a comolete systematic jazz video series available for purchase or subscription. If you do and I am unaware please let me know or if you have a recommendation.
Always Good job Steve i think 5s and 7s have always been tough in a drummer's life
Great lesson! By the way, did you just combine French and Italian to create a new hybrid phrase at 4:52? :)
Hah! Maybe :(
Amazing solo!!!!!!! Luis Voisin drummer solo N 1🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁💪🇨🇦
Frankly, YOU make it sound as it should. Clarity of the groupings. Musical. Making your drums sing. And not just a bunch of 16ths played in a frantic manner, or to be polite, skilfully, as your model does.
I love this very creative Idea, lick
Thank you for sharing 🙂🥁✌👍
Yea!
Good stuff

Killing it as always, Steve!!! Great approach permuting and really owning the phrase. This process is often overlooked on other channels where "licks" are posted. Your approach here reminds me of a system Dave DiCenso discusses in his second book (RADD). By the way, love your audio too... such natural drum and cymbal sounds. Great engineering! Looking forward to shedding this and trying not to "spread the s*ck", hehe. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Jay - DaveD is one of my favorite all time drummers!
The effects on the announcement of the name was hilarious. Heh...
Great lesson, I really like that emphasize the musical view of exercises/licks so that they don’t become just that.
It’s a great independence exercise to keep the quarter note with the hi hat like you do. One of my life long exercises is to play hand and foot combinations in both triplets and sixteenths with quarter note on the hi hat, I still after 10+ years get stuck every once in a while.
Steve Holmes im inviting you here in North Korea to teach Drums..lol
Great explanation. Like your vids. Will try these one.
Great lesson Steve! A tasty little biscuit.
Yep that's a nice phase , great job Steve, I'll be taking that on !!!
Nice Steve. As always a useful well explained video. You never disappoint! Thank you!
That is a fantastic phrase. I have been playing 16ths phrased in 5's or 7's for some time but this orchestration is marvelous. Thank you.
Thanks for this Steve . Comprehensive.
That was fantastic! Keep up the great work! You video lessons are so helpful and really helping me improve. Thank you so much!
Another great lick to now work on. Thanks Steve! Awesome!

Great stuff Steve, thanks man …
That is a great sounding kit.
thk man here from argentine,
Another great video Steve ... really love the way you break these "impossible" fills down! Cheers!
Steve . Amazing
Steve Holmes you star! Loving the videos! I’m a drummer and vocal percussionist and often sing the parts through the mouth to help on the kit and your videos have helped that with the way you break things down!
Great work ! All the best
Andy Frost
always love Steve !!!!!!!
Great one 👌🏽
Love LOVE this. Your instruction on how to digest this is TOPS Steve. So many odd grouping ideas right now. Whoooosh.
Excellent
you knoww
Steve, Your lessons and your method of breakdown and learning technique is fantastic. I have taken some fine tips on complicated voicings from you. I have also forwarded your vids to students and friends who have been helped as well. Thanks pal. May your lumber ever swing.
love this channel, feel, timing phrasing all tremendous & so easy to follow the instructions...
Just recently discovered this. Brilliant. Early days, but my brain is currently turned to mush. I'll get it though.
Dude, YOU’VE taken the drum world by storm!

Very inspirational. Thanks and blessings for posting such an awesome video.

Excellent philosophy at the end of the video Steve - you rock! I've learned alot from you. Keep up the good work!!!
thanks! great lesson!
Using konnakol to vocalize the groupings really helps.
Not sure about limb breaker but it is cool. When I first saw the thumb nail I thought it was Tuplet 7s over the bar line
Its really helpfull
Great lesson from a great teacher! Thank you Steve!
Thx Steve for Turning on the Lights
So Awesome! Thank you for the post and inspiration!!!!
I love it and eat this stuff up. Thanks for sharing .
Nice lesson (and great playing as always) but I think the shot you took at other channels in the beginning was quite uncalled for. First of all: Aren't you trying to generate clicks as well with your videos? Second: There were some really good drummers in the thumbnails you showed (Nate from 80/20 or Jeff Crabtree for example) and saying that they barely learned the "bare minimum" is a really ignorant statement. If you watch any video by Nate or Jeff I'm sure you'll see that they certainly didn't just learn the bare minimum. Both these guys have real careers as drummers outside of YT. Common man... Third: Even if some of these people just learned the bare minimum and only want to generate clicks, what is so wrong about that? They still took the time to transcribe and learn the lick they are talking about and explain it to other drummers. Can't find anything wrong with that. Just because you sat down with Gergo doesn't make any difference for the outcome of this video which is in short: You show the lick / concept of a famous drummer in order to make it digestable to your audience which is pretty much exactly what all the other guys are doing.
This is meant in a positive way, so I hope you don't take it the wrong way. I've watched many of your videos and I think you are a great player and teacher and for a man of your caliber I just thought this was unnecessary. Cheers.
Fair enough Doc. Thanks for the feedback.
Why is it that a little criticism of someone's UA-cam drum video (I totally agree with you Steve about some other channels) is unacceptable? Why are posters so sensitive to comments that may come their way about their content if they choose to put it out there? What happens if these UA-cam content providers ever get fired from a gig? Would they be able to handle it? Maybe these drummers will never do be on gig and face criticism. It's a new world...
Great video Steve! I was wondering what this lick would sound swung. Maybe next video? :)
P.S I saw you play with Altered at Cuesta College a couple years back and it was truly inspiring!
Thank you!
Nice Thanks i live doing seven stroke rolls on the set also.
Your lessons are some of the best I've ever seen - thank you!!
great...
Cool
Hey Steve-You gained some weight? Thanx for the great lesson-like always!!!You are a killer....
