A potentially $4k laptop with a 720p 30fps camera. Each year I am amazed that Dell gets away with that one.

Agreed this has prevented me from buying any xps models completely and switching to MacBook pros instead even if I have to put boot camp and just put windows on it

Most likely they had no space to put a better camera in because of the thin edges. In a well-lit environment I still got a crisp image.
Tbh I use the camera only for Teams meetings and it’s totally enough. My coworkers don’t need see every pimple on my face in high resolution.
Also most offices will have a meeting room with a proper camera and table mic. So camera is definitely not a dealbreaker.
The xps really stands out in performance, battery life and display. I can easily Code for 4h with docker and some applications running in the background, search the internet in 20 tabs and listen to music while sitting in the sun. I had a Thinkpad x1 before and I got to admit it’s a huge upgrade

true, but how often do you usually use the front camera, and would the low-resolution matter?

Pretty sure it's a trade-off no wanting to sacrifice the bezel and not wanting to put a notch. With how much I use a webcam...I prefer this.

The audio of the XPS isn't as full as the Mac, but they sure have improved it a ton. For Windows laptops, this is one of the top sounding ones out there. Looking forward t your coverage of the Latitude 9440 as well. I just got one myself, and the audio is similarly impressive. I also have the M1 Mac Pro 14 - and it's nearly comparable in audio quality. Honesty, I think Dell's speakers are as good, and it may just come down to an EQ optimization to make it great.

The bottom cover can get to 55 degree Celsius. It’s something that you probably shouldn’t put on you lap. That will cause low-temperature burns if you use it that way for long enough. The cooling definitely sucks. The 4070 is a bait. You are not getting the performance that you are paying for.

My old XPS sent in for repair is being replaced with this unit brand new i7, 16gb straight up. Pretty happy with the improvements from an exactly 3 yr old pc. Video/gpu, power, sound all OK & I get double SSD memory to my old xps ... should be here in a few days! Not a bad deal. I bought this last week and it is brilliant for me going back to Windows after a few short encounters with macbooks, I can't stand the mac os. IMO the Dell XPS 16 is a joke. Dell as ruined it's best features.
The XPS 16 now has soldered-in RAM, this means if you buy s 16GB model, you are STUCK with that. Also there's only ONE M.2 Slot.
Where as the previous model has two and two user upgradeable memory banks But this is my opinion only and your requirements may vary.

I got the i7 4050 and upgraded the ram and ssd myself. Beast of a machine, in the thermal sweet spot. Buying the i9 and beefier GPU is a waste of money, you wont see that performance return given GPU power limits and CPU thermals. Even in ideal thermal conditions the i9 is only 10% or so faster than the i7.

    • @pful7

    • @aerohydra3849
      @aerohydra3849 11 місяців тому

@@pful7 IIRC every GPU in the XPS is limited to 40W TDP meaning the difference between them is quite small. For example, Andre got a 8300 timespy score on his 4070 while I got around 6700 on my 4050 model. That translates to around a 25% performance difference. I'd expect the 4060 to sit around 10-15% higher performance.
I'd say if money is a concern definitely stick with the 4050 unless you need 8 GB of VRAM and not 6.

The audio is hard to compare, but in this particular recording there's more clarity and separation on the Mac. Also, 9530 does some very weird audio processing that distorts sharp audio transients (not only does it clip them, but it also tries to simulate them by a weird "zap" sound). The new "Cirrus Logic Awesome Speaker Amps" device is the likely culprit. I haven't been able so far to identify whether this is by design or not :(

Andrew, I have to compliment you for you well-done channel. It is one of the best and I do learnfrom watching your reviews. You articulate well. and thorough in your reviews with frank opinions on the products. thank you for that.
This Dell XPS 15 is one model I am considering. One big reason is because it is customizable the same as my ASUS ROG F-15 Dash TUF I currently have. It is cheap, and works well. I have two iissues with it: (1) Keyboad (2) screen. And these are the two most important elements in terms of interface between human and machine.
    1. Keyboard.
The 10 keypad I don't like and almost never use. I'd rather have a larger. keyboard and do without the 10-key pad. Many vendors still like to incorporate that 10 key bad in their models. I am not an accountant and when I DO need to use numbers, there's Windows system calculator, the number row on any standard keyboard, Some good 3rd party calculators with tapes that I use. and also just using the classic 'Hey Google' on my smartphone when I need to calculate. When the 10 keypad is present, I. often have to look each time as to where is the location of the inverted cursor key. without the 10 keypad I can just slide my fingers over to the right side of the board and I know it is there. More efficiency for typing. I did wish that Dale had Lenovo's keyboard because I think that's one of the best in the industry. But then that's apples and oranges..
    2. Display
I am still lucky to be blessed with good eyesight, but due to the change of focal length with aging I need to use reading glasses when I read, Especially when it comes to complex tiny Japanese kanji character text (Tokyo resident).
For these reasons, I am looking for a replacement with some degree of future-proof
( meaning no soldered lockdown). I also want the performance primarily as a creator to do video editing, such as your mentioning of da Vinci Resolve. I might dabble in a game once in a while. but I shout em play games. Do you think this would be the most appropriate machine for my needs? or would the larger 17 inch, which I think has vapor cooling, be the better choice? however, with 17" one gives up some degree of portability. And acquires. increased weight.
My only other requirement is to have thunderbolt 4 ports for extensibility., PD, and externl monitor support In order to connect my external ultrawide LG, 4K monitor, for Da Vinci video editing. On that note, there is no problem with this machine. I do like Asus if for no other reason they are generally upgradable. But it seems that Dal makes full detailed manuals available online.
Oh, thanks for the introduction to UPDF. I create Pdfs a lot. and I may consider their product and offering. Thanks also for your patience in my long rant here. If you ever get to Tokyo, I owe you a beer. :-) Cheers, Jerry, Tokyo, Japan.

I'm not a huge gamer, but, I have heard such bad reviews on this graphic card. I do video editing and I was going to upgrade the ram to 32Gig. Any thoughts? This is a 2nd computer, but, even so, I'm concerned about this Intel graphics card. Am I going to hate it or will I be able to do light video editing in Adobe Elements, etc. for 5-10 minute videos? I also have an extra Samsung 980 PRO SSD I was going to put into the slot as the main drive and take the 512GB it comes with and put it in the 2nd slot for storage. Thanks

Just ordered one as a replacement for an older previous 7590 model. That one was the last to have a full set of ports, but I guess I have to accept dongles are the norm now. I had the 4K OLED on the last one, and to be honest I hate it. Even zoomed 200% I find text hard to read on it and I use some old software for work that doesn’t scale well, so have run it at 1080p most of the time anyway. Also the OLED is terrible in daylight with low brightness and a glossy screen. Gone for the matte LCD this time.
This will be my third XPS15, and I love the solid build quality, and good power in small package for a 15 inch, while still easy to upgrade, replace battery etc. Not the most exciting product, but good workhorse that still allows you to fire up the odd game when you feel like it.
I think they have a solid package and hope if they do a redesign they don’t mess too much with the formula.

Great review, Andrew, as always! From the informed consumer perspective, which I gather (evidently) is NOT Dell's primary audience (understatement), it appears as if, Dell is following the usual line of any review is a good review. Surely, however, there must be one sober person on the board, taking note, that, given the less-than-enthusiastic reviews (at least on UA-cam), it's time to switch things up. Of course, those of us buying these units for whatever reason feel duped (a 40W RTX 4070!). The standard "but" that floods the descriptions ("It's got such and such, but..."!) is enough to irk any buyer of a so-called "new" product. One can't help but feel that Dell is milking a good but unsustainable formula for all its worth. Is it any wonder that cynicism regarding their products is through the roof right now? Anyway, thanks again. My only complaint is that some of us get shortchanged with these reviews because they're typically focused on the most expensive, OLED displays. I wouldn't mind getting some real, hands-on thoughts beyond "acceptable" when it comes to FHD+. I was forced to get that display this year with the i9 + 4070 config ($$$), but I digress. Below 40W & 60W for GPU are just a non-starter for premium laptops in 2023. Not to mention the absence of WiFi 6E, outdated webcam and outdated 4800 RAM for such an expensive "premium" laptop. Dell should have upgraded the XPS line last year and this year there should have already been 2nd iteration of the upgrade. There are other premium slim models-e.g. Lenovo Legion Slim 7i Gen 8-that already can feed GPU with 100W+, have FHD webcam, and 5200 RAM. Not to mention that many laptops in the upper middle category this year already have mini-led or OLED displays-and they are cheaper than XPS.

well, this is interesting... I recently replaced my old 6th gen XPS 9550 (which was a thermal design disaster) with Inspiron Plus 7620 (i7-12700h+RTX3060) and was quite upset to see that the CPU does not perform as good as it can (current limit throttling kicks in fast with no adjustments possible on Intel XTU).
However, interesting to see that the CPU performance of these 13th gen XPS's is even worse! I get ~17300pts on Cinebench R23 on (re-pasted) Inspiron 7620. If you are like me, and want to get the maximum performance from the silicon that you are buying, there are better options from other manufacturers.
If you still, for some odd reason, really want a Dell laptop, then Inspiron 7620 offers a (much) better value. The 3K screen is actually quite good.

Nice PC. Camera fair and mics are good. For what one is paying for this no excuse for 720p camera. Upgradeability excellent with ability to upgrade ram and ssd. Graphics card selection sounds good but with the power limit to these Nvidia cards one does not really get what one would expect with these. Note the ARC 370 is offered and I really wonder if the Nvidia cards with the limited power wattage offer that much better performance fo the money. Intel has upgraded their drivers for the Arc and it is better than originally started with but it is still not in the same class. Who knows? Machine design and appearance very good. Excellent review.

I bought the Arc originally and ultimately exchanged it for the 4050, unfortunately from my experience with it the arc still underperforms quite a bit. For context, Timespy score for the Arc for me was 3800 (3500 GPU) vs 6700 (6300 GPU) on the 4050 model I exchanged it with. So the 4050 is almost twice as powerful as the Arc, and the 4070 is definitely over twice as powerful as the Arc. Even the older 3050 and 1650ti models from last year and the year before (which one of my family members have for work) have similar to better GPU performance at around 3600 and 4000 Timespy GPU scores respectively.
That's unfortunately the best case scenario as many programs and games are still not optimized for Arc, for example I played TLOU on the 4050 with 60 fps 1080p High but on the Arc it struggled to even maintain 30 fps on Low 720p. The Arc also struggles to stay cool, it ran a good 5-6 C hotter than the 4050, whilst the 4050 maintains around 74-75C the Arc regularly hit 80C+ under load.
I wanted to believe in Intel but unfortunately the Arc just feels under-par for the laptop. It just doesn't look good that a generation older card in a 3 year older model (1650ti) can sometimes beat it.

Meteorlake later this year has huge efficiency gains and 2 times faster GPU with L4 cache Adamantine.

@@HDRPC NO. Your still going to want an Nvidia chip. If anything you will want it more and more as more "AI" effects are added to video editing programs. The tensor cores make some of the AI effects happen 10xs faster than without. Dedicated GPUs are not going anywhere for a long time.

Interesting review. I felt that the laptop was relying heavily on the Oled display to carry it through the other stagnant features.
The laptop needs at least one 1080p option for the camera, an updated chassis, and I think that although it has improved somewhat, better audio. Dell does advertise this as a Macbook Pro competitor, and it is deficient in that regard.

Nah mate, I don’t feel the same way. I’ve been using the new XPS 15 with the i7 and 32GB ram for a month now and from my perspective it’s a great laptop. Dell doesn’t solely rely on the screen. This machine has great performance, cooling, an amazing keyboard, great speakers, incredible battery life and very clean microphones. Camera was a bit disappointing for me too, but for work it’s absolutely acceptable.
In an office relying on windows you can’t just get a MacBook. This results in the XPS factually being a competitor to the MacBook. I mean macs are great but it’s so bad to code on them in Java and you need windows virtualizations or workarounds for every other application used for my specific Java coding.
Also nowadays for big companies there are only a few laptop model lines they will buy. Either Mac, Dell or Thinkpad. So I guess the last word is always on company side.

    • @crazyelf1
      @crazyelf1 Рік тому +1

@@pashaQuadriceps It is always dependent on the company.
As far as why I said stagnant, Dell doesn't seem to have updated the chassis - just the internals. This seems to be common this generation as well. Most laptop companies just used the Intel 13000 or AMD Zen 4 and this generation of GPU. They didn't update the chassis.
You do have a point about the Macbook Pro - if you go Apple, you're going into the full Apple ecosystem. One comparison may be how the Dell does against say, the Lenovo X1 series, HP Elitebook, etc.
I'm glad you like your new laptop.

For the simple fact that I can go from a 256GB SSD...and 8GB of RAM...to 4TB of storage (two 2TB SSD's) and 32GB of RAM?....that is what places this Dell model Head and shoulders above ANY Mac....or any other laptop out there...(Razer.....MSI...HP...etc) To the masses out there asking Dell to "change things up"?....in as nice a way as possible..SHUT UP..and leave things as they are....before they follow the other companies and REMOVE the ability to increase RAM or storage space!!!.....if you want something "better" or "different"?...go elsewhere and leave us "Computer-ists" alone with our perfect machines!!
