Khronos and Genesis are definitely some of the most underrated RC albums, but I love them both so much! As a half-Greek metalhead, RC was the first band that introduced me to black metal and once I listened to Non Serviam, well, there was no turning back! Triarchy, Theogonia, Thy Mighty Contract, Sanctus Diavolos and Heretics are some of my favorites records too! Keep up the good work, Questy, even though I'm a bit sad you didn't try to pronounce "Κατά τον Δαίμονα Εαυτού" 😉

Interesting ranking, I agree with some of it, not others. Sleep of the Angels and A Dead Poem are easily in my top 5 from the band so... lol :))))) I don't feel there's a huge sound difference between them and Triarchy of the Lost Lovers, so the wildly different rankings were a bit surprising, but hey, it's BM, each album can hit us in unique ways. But yeah, this is a tough band to rank because almost all their albums are damn near flawless. Heretics and Rituals are the only ones which, although I like, are a bit more hit-and-miss in terms of consistency so I'd probably rank them last.
I remember hearing Triarchy when it came out and being amazed by the melodic riffs. They are one of my favorites and probably the biggest influence for my black metal side. The Greek phrase "Κατά τον δαίμονα εαυτού" may be translated in several ways, including as "do what thou wilt", a quote associated with Aleister Crowley and Thelema. Sakis Tolis contended that this was the label's translation of the Greek phrase, and a more accurate translation is "true to your own spirit", which better fits the subject matter of the album. The same sentence can also be seen on Jim Morrison's tombstone, again in Greek.
Great list - pretty much similar to my own rankings. Still remember my first steps as a metalhead in the early 90s and buying Non Serviam on cd - it blew me away! If you want to listen to an amazing Greek black metal band (lead by former RC bassist Jim Mutilator), try Yoth Iria - phenomenal music!
A Dead Poem is a classic. Ya done it dirty 😂 I think it takes what the earlier albums were trying to do and perfects it. I also personally find Kata Ton Daimona Eaytoy to be pretty dull, but that’s par for the course for the divergence in our stylistic takes. Cheers for the list. Been looking forward to doing this one for a pretty long time. Just waiting to see what the next album brings.
I really like that you discovered Rotting from Aealo, but eventually you also reached back to their top notch works which are The mighty & Non Serviam. With minor difference i would place Non in the first place and i also think that Dead Poem is much much higher in the ranks. Small hint, Non Serviam has such a good songwriting that you literally hear it for decades ( i strongly believe that Non Serviam and Necromantia's Scarlet Evil Witching Black are the 2 top Greek black metal releases of all time).
I've heard of Rotting Christ but accidentally assume they were Death Metal - which Iam not a fan off. Then I saw the album The Heretics being promoted and gave it a listen out of curiosity and my god it blew me away!!! Loved that album now working my way through their discography lol
Rotting Christ man .. spartan metal at its best ! I met them a couple of weeks ago we were playing on the same festival in Germany, these guys are metal as fuck . I'm Greek so I can translate those 2 titles for you my friend, Aealo means conquered or taken over. And Kata ton demona eafto means follow(trust) your inner voice, thats ancient Greek.

Much like you, I think the first is still the best: Thy Mighty Contract! The most epic, dark, satanic and atmospheric album and the best of their releases! Nothing can surpasss Thy Mighty Album when it comes to its sick atmosphere and the awesome riffs. Everything on this album shows a band at its full force tgat unfortunately will never sound like this again. It's truly a gem of the Greek Black Metal Scene and an classic on its own! Actually "A Dead Poem" was really hated in my country Greece when it first came out. Metalheads thought that Rotting Christ were "sold out" with this album. But now it 's for many people an absolute favorite, a classic. How times change...
For me thy mighty contract is their best too and 1 of my favourits of all times in extreme metal.. bought it when it came out back in the days just by it's cover art...yeahhh, I'm that old LOL :)

Love RT, they've been really consistent throughout the years. Sadly their last 2 albums are kinda on the weak side. A Dead Poem kinda makes sense in the time it was released. Mid-late 90's Gothic metal was peaking and RT did their take on it. It's obvious the emulation of bands like Moonspell and Tiamat on this album, but i really like it. interesting choice putting sleep of angels last. Not my favourite by a long strech but I like heretics a lot less. Execution on Heretics is just very messy. Good ideas just put together very sloppily. The Hellenic black metal scene is fantastic. Rotting Christ is great especially live. 13 Sleep of the Angels 12 Kronos 11 A Dead Poem 10 Katá ton Daimona Eautoú 9 Aealo 8 Genesis 7 Triarchy of the Lost Lovers 6 Theogonia 5 Sanctus Diavolos 4 The Heretics 3 Rituals 2 Non Serviam 1 Thy Mighty Contract
From best to "worst" 1. Back in 1998 the first track that hooked me in was Snowing still, so Triarchy is, by default, an anchor and the defining RC sound for me and with Elysian Fields to be my main influences when I'm thinking Hellenic Black (and maybe Nightfall GR) 2. A curve ball here for any RC fan, A Dead Poem. After almost 25 years listening to RC I can say with confidence that Dead Poem has more similarities with my favorite album than differences. Brutal vocals and guitars are quite aggressive in more parts, it is melodic and atmospheric with dirty harmonics here and there, and by playing them on the guitar you can't distinguish the two albums (specially with songs like Sorrowful farewell or among two storms) 3. Even though I can't really rank one over the other from here and on, I could say Non Serviam is my no.3 for the same reasons as beyond. Plus this is the second ever album that I listened to and was a blast with the dirty harmonics in the riff of Non Serviam to be a joy. A style that started with Non Serviam and carried on to the next two albums. 4. OK Khronos is next.There is no song that I would skip in this album (same goes to Triarch but not to Dead Poem or Non Serviam). More of the tracks have a lighter tone but it starts with a blast with "Thou art Blind" and somewhere in the middle of the album "You Are I" is there to keep the tension. 5. Genesis could be my number 2 RC album but I listened to it over and over and over again when it first came out that I started to spot similarities in almost every track in the album but Lex Talionis and maybe Daemons, that makes it difficult for a song to stand out. Even though Khonos was the turning point to their origins, Genesis was the album with the most expectations, with the returning of the old good logo to leave a clear message. The aggressiveness of the album is the reason that I always choose it to play first, but there is new experimental elements which always turn me off in the end. Things like the riff of Nightmare, that it sounds like Greek pop or Greek folk songs (Λόγια κλειδωμένα), which unfortunately they continued in a higher rate after Genesis. 6, Thy Mighty Contract would be quite higher in the past. This is the typical sound or 90s for hellenic black metal bands, a disc that should be classified as Thou art Lord (Daoloth have played some part there) than RC. Don't get me wrong there is nothing bad with a good old "The Era of Satan Rising", but still first era of RC could end like Necromantia or Thou Art Lord than what they became since their 2nd era and after. 7. Sleep for the Angels is the penultimate disc that I listen to. This is an excellent album with some exceptional songs in it, like Cold Colors, After Dark I feel, and Der Perfekt Traum, but it is not what first comes to your mind when you hear the phrase "Rotting Christ". This is closer to Moonspell though which is not a bad thing after all. 8. Last but not least, Sanctus Diabolus, a medium, a passage from their third era to their forth era, a continuation to Genesis with tracks like Vision of the Blind order or Thy Wings Thy Horns Thy Sin (love this song), some between Genesis and Theogonia like Athanati Este and Sanctus Diabolus and others that I can not listen at all like Tyrannical. After Sanctus Diabolus the Greek folk additions and their style in general has been changed so much, that even though I can realize that I'm listening to RC still feels that there is nothing much from the band I loved.
I'm definitely the outlier here. One of my favorite bands and I've been with them since Triarchy came out. I was addicted to that album and didn't go anywhere without it. Here's my list after 25+ years of full devotion to the band (changes per season): 1. A Dead Poem 2. Theogonia 3. The Heretics 4. Rituals 5. Κατά τον δαίμονα εαυτού 6. Sleep of the Angels 7. Aealo 8. I haven't really gone through much of Rotting Christ's music. I really love Triarchy of lost lovers, but I haven't really listened to their other stuff. I did listen to their latest single which I kind of hated, it really didn't sound good to me.
Septicflesh and Rotting Christ of course are both fantastic! Varathron is another awesome band, and I like Flames as well. I also enjoy some of the old stuff too, like Socrates, Aphrodite’s Child and Vangelis. And I’m sure there’s a lot of other great music from your country that I still need to hear! Cheers 🤘🤘

I had listened to some RC before but this inspired me to check out more. Listened to Non Serviam last night and absolutely loved it.

Love RT, they've been really consistent throughout the years. Sadly their last 2 albums are kinda on the weak side.
A Dead Poem kinda makes sense in the time it was released. Mid-late 90's Gothic metal was peaking and RT did their take on it. It's obvious the emulation of bands like Moonspell and Tiamat on this album, but i really like it. It has very cool and catchy songs.

interesting choice putting sleep of angels last. Not my favourite by a long strech but I like heretics a lot less. Execution on Heretics is just very messy. Good ideas just put together very sloppily. Mine might be a bit different than others but for me, going best to worst

If you want the Greek pronunciation of Aealo it's like Eh-AH-lo. Kata ton Daimona Eaytou is similar to the spelling, KatA ton DEH-mona Eh-af-TWO.

Khronos and theogonia were the first ones I heard like ‘em a lot
From best to "worst"
1. Back in 1998 the first track that hooked me in was Snowing still, so Triarchy is, by default, an anchor and the defining RC sound for me and with Elysian Fields to be my main influences when I'm thinking Hellenic Black (and maybe Nightfall GR)
2. A curve ball here for any RC fan, A Dead Poem. After almost 25 years listening to RC I can say with confidence that Dead Poem has more similarities with my favorite album than differences. Brutal vocals and guitars are quite aggressive in more parts, it is melodic and atmospheric with dirty harmonics here and there, and by playing them on the guitar you can't distinguish the two albums (specially with songs like Sorrowful farewell or among two storms)
3. Even though I can't really rank one over the other from here and on, I could say Non Serviam is my no.3 for the same reasons as beyond. Plus this is the second ever album that I listened to and was a blast with the dirty harmonics in the riff of Non Serviam to be a joy. A style that started with Non Serviam and carried on to the next two albums.
4. OK Khronos is next.There is no song that I would skip in this album (same goes to Triarch but not to Dead Poem or Non Serviam). More of the tracks have a lighter tone but it starts with a blast with "Thou art Blind" and somewhere in the middle of the album "You Are I" is there to keep the tension.
5. Genesis could be my number 2 RC album but I listened to it over and over and over again when it first came out that I started to spot similarities in almost every track in the album but Lex Talionis and maybe Daemons, that makes it difficult for a song to stand out. Even though Khonos was the turning point to their origins, Genesis was the album with the most expectations, with the returning of the old good logo to leave a clear message. The aggressiveness of the album is the reason that I always choose it to play first, but there is new experimental elements which always turn me off in the end. Things like the riff of Nightmare, that it sounds like Greek pop or Greek folk songs (Λόγια κλειδωμένα), which unfortunately they continued in a higher rate after Genesis.
6, Thy Mighty Contract would be quite higher in the past. This is the typical sound or 90s for hellenic black metal bands, a disc that should be classified as Thou art Lord (Daoloth have played some part there) than RC. Don't get me wrong there is nothing bad with a good old "The Era of Satan Rising", but still first era of RC could end like Necromantia or Thou Art Lord than what they became since their 2nd era and after.
7. Sleep for the Angels is the penultimate disc that I listen to. This is an excellent album with some exceptional songs in it, like Cold Colors, After Dark I feel, and Der Perfekt Traum, but it is not what first comes to your mind when you hear the phrase "Rotting Christ". This is closer to Moonspell though which is not a bad thing after all.
8. Last but not least, Sanctus Diabolus, a medium, a passage from their third era to their forth era, a continuation to Genesis with tracks like Vision of the Blind order or Thy Wings Thy Horns Thy Sin (love this song), some between Genesis and Theogonia like Athanati Este and Sanctus Diabolus and others that I can not listen at all like Tyrannical.
After Sanctus Diabolus the Greek folk additions and their style in general has been changed so much, that even though I can realize that I'm listening to RC still feels that there is nothing much from the band I loved.
I'm definitely the outlier here. One of my favorite bands and I've been with them since Triarchy came out. I was addicted to that album and didn't go anywhere without it. Here's my list after 25+ years of full devotion to the band (changes per season):

I haven't really gone through much of Rotting Christ's music. I really love Triarchy of lost lovers, but I haven't really listened to their other stuff.
I did listen to their latest single which I kind of hated, it really didn't sound good to me.

Septicflesh and Rotting Christ of course are both fantastic! Varathron is another awesome band, and I like Flames as well.
I also enjoy some of the old stuff too, like Socrates, Aphrodite’s Child and Vangelis.
And I’m sure there’s a lot of other great music from your country that I still need to hear!
