Craig Fritchey the screaming part, that was actually a combination of the fuzz and another effect I have built into the guitar,an onboard vintage effect called a Dan Armstrong Green Ringer, a friend installed it in my ‘73 LP, those sick Bends I kept repeating, and that real screaming tone towards the end may be the green ringer..it adds an upper octave and all these weird overtones..similar to something Jimi used, called an Octavia. If you notice, right before it starts getting really weird and scream-like, I put the toggle switch on the upper position, and then pull out my upper volume dial, that push/pull potentiometer activates the Green Ringer. Frank Zappa had one in his SG, I stole the idea from him. ( U see me pull out the knob at 3:50 ) that effect is the only way u can get that weirdness..it happens when u stack two notes together and bend one of them.. (the further away ,or closer the two notes get, the overtones start to change) .. its unpredictable, kind of low tech and funky
Thanks, Kevin. I really love your hat videos. They are so informative and interesting! I have found wool felt hats keep my head warmer in the winter as compared to fur felt hats. Any comments or advice on quality wool felt hats (such as fedoras) for warmth in winter?
Hmm, i find hats to be warmer when they are deep and i can pull them deep over my ears, but honestly, nyc winters?? it is way too cold for a brimmed hat ! i wear knit caps, fur troopers, caps w earflaps and the hood on a really high end, down ski jacket or full length down parka, i dont fool around🤠
Hi Kevin... Would you be able to go through the sub types of Fedoras ... and distinguish between which ones might just be brand specific and not universal. ie: the temple I think is just a Stetson model. Are all sub 2” brims like the Asher considered a trilby? 🍻 cheers Peter
Trilby is not a real term anymore it's just slang for a smallish brim..so there's no guidelines for how small is a trilby. They're all snap brim fedoras, they come in any Suze brim. Trilby means small brim these days, but it's actually a different style altogether, with a tapered A shaped crown, and,a brim that stays down in front,no snap And yes,I'll try to do that video. Good idea
OK Brian May!!! I'm a cellist myself but have been wanting to try out some rock guitar solos on my cello. I must say that Johnny Depp has sold me on distressed hats. I hope I can wear out a hat to that point. Also, I notice that a lot of hat companies seem to cater to one gender over the other. For women, the biggest ones seem to be Gigi Pip and Lack of Color. Do you know of any others I should check out? Unisex is obviously fine too (though I guess all hats are technically unisex).
Scala & Dorfman Pacific are a great company.. same brand but they have catalogs of hats under both brand names.. Scala makes all kind of stuff, even lady’s fascinators . You can also try Callanan hats are great too
If I were to make any suggestion regarding crown height, I'd say that a good starting point is to have the crown height one half the height of your face from hairline to chin. It's a flattering size without being too much. Most people simply aren't used to having anything other than a knitted cap or baseball cap on their head, and those don't add any height at all. As you pointed out, they need to take the time to get used to seeing themselves appear taller.
Just found this old video where you talk about trying on New Era fitted baseball caps as a way to find your size. I own 3 of them and nowhere is the actual size indicated. In my case all the labels inside the caps read “Large/X Large.”
Nah, that’s not the real deal major league “fitted cap” that new era is famous for. The ball players in the major league use a wool new era fitted cap, it comes in actual hat sizes, if you’re buying them in L-Xl then that’s not a major league spec fitted cap, it’s something else that they make.. “fitted” mens it comes in number sizes, wherever u got it from, it’s not the fitted kind. It has to be the authentic collection, and wool, and come in numerical sizes. www.neweracap.com/products/new-york-yankees-authentic-collection-59fifty-fitted They’re usually about $42-49 bucks
I don't like it.. I don't care for that particular felt they use on that series.. they feel weak and floppy to me. I don't really care for wool hats unless it's Crushable LiteFelt.. with a LiteFelt logo inside. Stetson makes nicer quality stuff for less money imo In that price range I'd rather go with a Crushable Stetson, like a Moab,Bozeman, Sturgis,etc.. they're cheaper and much nicer felt, to me..that is.. in my opinion. I think they make a couple of Crushables in a gambler shape like the Yancy
Hi Kevin. Some say that the Whippet now a says is a poor copy of the original one they used to have in The Old days. The brim is too wide, the crown is too low. And the ribbon is also not the same hight. This is the general opinion on the FL forum. What is your reaction on this matter, o great hatter?
Eh, not exactly a poor copy, more like the modernized, streamlined version, I’d say. more purists exist on FL, they want high, boxey crowns, wide bands and back bows,Cav edges.. these are all antiquated, vintage styles, like wide lapels in the 70’s, they don’t sell now.. folks who make hats like Stetson want to sell thousands, millions, they want them to be classical yet accessible, wearable.. and these days folks want a LOW crown, and a clean, streamlined look. The Stetsonian is a way more authentic style from the old days, high, wide crown, wider binding, wider band.. but I sell one stestonian to every 30-50 Whippets. that is a successful style, I wouldn’t change a thing. Folks on those forums are always snobby, they like what’s trendy on that channel.. same thing with basses, guitar effects..music gear.. one brand is considered cool, another trendy.. this is style, and styles evolve.. I think if you like a style, then it’s good. Forums like that tend to pressure folks,like..this is cool, this isn’t.. they are great for asking questions, but that part..the trendiness, the peer pressure... If it isn’t as popular, then less people like it,.and I won’t sell it..that’s business. And the Whippet is about as successful a hat style can be. I say, if u want vintage, go vintage.. if u want a modern Stetson, buy that. Yes,it’s not the same, but..it is not a bad thing. IMO Merry 😃 happy! Kev
It’s almost like buying a car..they make some of the classic models from the past, but styles evolve, and have the same “feel” but they change.. according to the average consumer’s taste..the percentage of hat buyers that want a hat to vintage specs is very low, most just wanna look good, keep warm or cover bald spots, the vintage purist is a small part of our business
Aside from their Western hats, Stetson makes two (Open Road and Kings Row) that are 2 3/4" and 3 1/2" respectively. But the crowns are shaped differently (telescope and open road) so I wouldn't really call the style "fedora". It's really rare to find a new fedora with a brim wider than 2 1/2" these days. I'd have to do some digging to see if any of the major brands are still making any.
Optimo in Chicago makes a couple in 3+" brims, one for men, one for women. Borsalino still has a couple of models that are 3+", but they're not as good as they used to be. Bailey's makes several, but they're Bailey's and wool, so blech.
