The first track made me cry. That not easy fir me to do. My grandparents came from the Zumberak mountains in 1911 when my grandfather got work in the iron mines in Minnesota so he could pay his new brides passage in steerage to America. Im only half Croatian yet I’ve always had very strong feelings for this part of me without much education at all by my parents. Much of it was intuited if you get that. Im deeply spiritual as are my people. This song knocked me out of the park.

The woman who taught my Catholic Catechism class was Croatian American and had cousins in Croatia; her parents would have come to the U.S. circa WWI era or around when your grandparents came. Some of the people singing on the first song may still be alive in Pennsylvania given the recording date, circa 1970, Their voices are strong.

Song from around 4:25: "Ajd' na lijevo". This is not the standard version, therefore the text is different. But the beginning is:
Ajd' na lijevo, ajd' na desno,
    ajd' na ono isto mjesto

Someone in the Music Department or Library at Duquesne University in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania might be able to help you if you call them via Skype or something like that because Gateway Recordings, Inc. no longer exists. Each song might have different still alive artists and/or their descendants who've inherited rights? Tracking those singers or their children down might be what you have to do. You should probably buy the actual album from Amazon.com and get an LP player that can rip LPs to CD or USB - it'd sound better in your film production perhaps that way. But then you're in Australia, and Amazon probably wants you to shop only on Amazon.au. Here's a link to the album on Amazon.com in case you have a friend in America who can buy it and ship it to you: www.amazon.com/village-LP-DUQUESNE-UNIVERSITY-TAMBURITZANS/dp/B00GWX7VS8. My ancestry is Polish, German and Austrian, but I have a lot of Balkan DNA and Serbians showing up as 6th-8th cousins on 23 & Me around the world, including Australia :)

@@brookesilcox Brooke, here's a link to the university's music department, which still exists unlike Gateway Recordings, Inc. Someone there might give you the phone number or email address of whoever is in charge of the Duquesne University Tamburitzans today. That director should know who still has rights to particular pieces recorded in the early 1960s and how to contact them or their children or grandchildren for permission: www.duq.edu/academics/schools/music

Hi Brooke -- I wonder what you've found -- the music your own family grew up with in former Yugoslavia may sound nothing like this. I'm sure Duquesne University can tell you about your family's region.

I think I sold the LP. Should have kept it. You probably heard it as a child as these are all old folk songs recorded by a university in PA in order to preserve the heritage.
