- There’s undoubtedly a very special relationship between Israel and the United States. Since the establishment of the State of Israel in the British Mandate of Palestine, the two countries have had deep ideological, political and spiritual ties. This unique relationship between the two has resulted in shielding Israel from criticism and accountability for its occupation, apartheid and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians for over seven decades. Yet can this relationship be explained simply by the role of Zionist lobbying? By U.S. foreign policy objectives? Can American support for Israel be simply explained as continued empathy for the horrors of the Holocaust? Or is the truth closer to home and in the mirror?
In the season finale of Backspace, Sana looks at how the story of Israel has been constructed in the United States - and the very American story at its root, where the indigenous of the land are rendered visible in a very particular way.

As an American, Israel doesn’t matter to me.
As an Irish person growing up between Ireland Europe and Australia and politically engaged since my teens the only thing that seems exceptional about the United States of America is its mind boggling sense of superiority and self agrandising justification for its relentless war mongering. Many many countries are far better at democracy, at caring for its own citizens and just being decent humans.
Palestinians are important to us africans who know what colonialism and apartheid do to a people, our hero Mandela saw and felt the suffering of palestinians. Yasser Arafat supported the struggle of africans.
Yasser Arafat got immense riches and didn't do anything for anyone after the assassination of Yitzchak Rabin. On the contrary, he called for more violence. Check his net worth and his actually measurable political impact other than worsening an already unsalvageable situation.

Israel has been working night and day to ethnically cleanse the Palestinian people from their homeland since even before Israel become a state - when it was known as the Zionist movement.
Israel didn't just cleanse Palestinians in 1948, when it was founded as a Western colonial project, and again under cover of a regional war in 1967.
It also worked to ethnically cleanse Palestinians every day between those dates and afterwards. The aim was to move them off their historic lands, and either expel them beyond Israel’s new, expanded borders or concentrate them into small ghettoes inside those borders - as a holding measure until they could be expelled outside the borders.
The 'settler' project, as we call it, is a misnomer. It's really Israel's ethnic cleansing programme. Israel even has a special word for it in Hebrew: 'Judaisation', or making the land Jewish. It is official government policy.
Gaza was the largest of the Palestinian reservations created by Israel's ethnic cleansing programme, and the most overcrowded. To stop the inhabitants spilling out, Israel built a fence-barrier in the early 1990s to pen them in. Then when policing became too hard from within the prison, Israel pulled back in 2005 to the outer perimeter barrier.
New technology allowed Israel to besiege Gaza remotely by land, sea and air in 2007, limiting the entry of food and vital items like medicine and cement for construction.
Automated gun towers shot anyone who came near the fence. The navy patrolled the sea, stopping boats straying more than a kilometre or two off shore. And drones watched 24 hours a day from the sky.
The people of Gaza were sealed in and largely forgotten, except when they lobbed a few rockets over the fence - to international indignation. If they fired too many rockets, Israel bombed them mercilessly and occasionally launched a ground invasion. The rocket threat was increasingly neutralised by a rocket interception system, paid for by the US, called Iron Dome.
Palestinians tried to be more inventive in finding ways to break out of their prison. They built tunnels. But Israel found ways to identify those that ran close to the fence and destroyed them.
Palestinians tried to get attention by protesting en masse at the fence. Israeli snipers were ordered to shoot them in the legs, leading to thousands of amputees. The 'deterrence' seemed to work.
Israel could once again sit back and let the Palestinians rot in Gaza. 'Quiet' had been restored.
...It looks like the ethnic cleansing programme is being applied to Gaza anew. The half of the population in the enclave's north is being herded south, where there are not the resources to cope with them. And even if there were, Israel has cut off food, water and power to everyone in Gaza.
The enclave is quickly becoming a pressure cooker. The pressure is meant to build on Egypt to allow the Palestinians entry into Sinai on 'humanitarian' grounds.
Whatever the media are telling you, the 'conflict' - that is, Israel's cleansing programme - started long before Hamas appeared on the scene. In fact, Hamas emerged very late, as the predictable response to Israel's violent colonisation project.
And no turning point was reached a week ago. This has all been playing out in slow motion for more than 100 years.
Ignore the fake news. Israel isn't defending itself. It's enforcing its right to continue ethnically cleansing Palestinians.

Or they use a false number to account for history and what actually happened. They did not predict the future accurately more than 200 times. They continue to double down on condemnation of critics because if that facade slips even a little then they will be subject to forensic analysis which will expose their lies and crimes over the centuries. The strange part is that Palestinians and Jews used to live with each other in peace prior to Israel deciding that they need to have a land of their own and deciding that Palestinians should be displaced without their land. There is a lot of evidence of Israel’s long-standing violations of international law. It has unilaterally annexed East Jerusalem, built illegal settlements in the occupied territory, and continued to build the separation wall in the occupied territory despite the International Court of Justice declaring it illegal in 2004.
The UN Special Rapporteur and several human rights organisations (see Amnesty, Human Rights Watch, B’Tselem) have stated that Israel’s system of rule in the Occupied Palestinian Territory is actually apartheid. Restrictions of movement, forced displacement of Palestinian communities, demolition of houses, land grabbing and settler violence and other human rights violations that occur under the occupation are well documented.

Your comments failed to take a stand in the 2 divides as Israel was the victims 2000 years ago but got back to their ancestral land in 1948. The Othman Arab Islamic Empire that ruled the place for 500 years might have enjoyed Palestine but the story has changed after the Arabs fought the newly established Israel state and lost the war. Thank you for creating this video. I'm an American who lived in Dubai for 4 years and that's when I found out about what's happening to the Palestinians for the first time. Before my time in the UAE, I had only ever heard Palestinians referred to as terrorists by the US news media, so I had no idea about their plight. I think most Americans don't know or understand that they have either been expelled/murdered or imprisoned within their own country and continually oppressed by Israel since 1948. I met so many lovely, gracious, kind-hearted Palestinians in Dubai that I came to realize that most of what is depicted about the Arab World in the West is propaganda designed to make us afraid of Arabs and promote Islamaphobia. Frankly, Araqbs are some the warmest, hospitable, and gracious people I've ever met and it's unfortunate that our government and Hollywood continually want to frame them in a bad light to serve their own selfish end-games.Thank you for bringing much needed light to this subject!

It's not just shared religious heritage, though. Many Palestinians are Christian. As covered in the video it's Americans seeing Israel in terms of their own distorted self-image. As a people supposedly fighting against colonialism, while simultaneously displacing an indigenous population. I never really understood that line about "shared values" before (what "shared values" I thought - do they mean settler-colonialism, ethnic cleansing, and Jim Crow?).
