Speaking of piling up….I’ve literally been going through paperwork that I’ve been avoiding that dates back to 2002! (The last 2 days, just.decluttering papers) 😳 100% serious! Now I’ve gotten through almost every single paper item…almost. Now I’ve got to tackle the filing cabinet and declutter, reorganize it. Downsizing big time and learning I don’t have to be perfect AND I definitely don’t need to keep so much! Biggest takeaway….less really IS MORE!
I was happy to hear I do several of the activities you mentioned. I recently retired and have been working on purging and organizing with the extra time on my hands ✋.
I love that you are always full of REALISTIC advice for people! I hate having too much stuff 🥴 BUT my family doesn’t understand my love of a NEAT, TIDY, ORGANIZED, UNCLUTTERED home 😒🤦🏽♀️ lol 😂
Loved this list! Especially the part about being mindful about the types of organizing systems someone decides to do. I know this would be a big ask, but I was thinking how fun it would be if you hosted a contest/video idea of people sending in a picture or video of a space in their house and you could do a speedy consult giving tips or advice on how to organize it. It could be fun to see the different ways you could organize the same type of space (ie. Under the sinks, pantries etc), while even utilizing affiliate links for product suggestions. The entries could also have an “about the space” bio so you would know what their intentions and goals are for the area. Apologies for the long comment, but it’s just a thought that popped in my mind while I was watching 😅
Definitely the routine declutter… I am always looking through our cabinets and closets to see what needs to go. It’s never a “one time & done” declutter. Nice video with lots of good content!
I’m a no lid kind of girl😉 I do like bins though because I love clean surfaces and hate clutter. I have very few trinkets sitting out only the ones I really love. It makes for super easy dusting!
Our daughter will donate unused items if she knows someone else could use and enjoy them. She needs a reason/call to action to donate: clothes at the beginning of the season, American girl dolls/accessories before Thanksgiving so they can make alot of girls Christmas’, trumpet at the end of middle school so another student gets to have an instrument instead of storing it forever, etc.
Yes on all of these! Love the "take things on your way"...I find that thinking about what I can take back when I leave the room, really helps keeps things tidy. 😌
Yes! Always try to take things with me from room to room. Also yes, good point about using systems that work for you and not what looks pretty- reminds me of your science based approach for fridge organizing. And labels yes! The husband and boy roommates are actually putting things away correctly and more easily finding things. I don't have to be the mom/ stuff queen people call because they don't know where stuff is (well not as much)
I love your ten tips to keep your small place organized. I think I do one or two of them but working on incorporating all if them. I printed out the mindful shopping cheat sheet!💡Thank you for sharing.💚🙋🏾♀️
This video gives me a +1 to Inspiration. Tonight I rolled a 10, so that brings me to.... Loading my dishwasher with the dishes I've been avoiding all week (and probably most of last week)! *~DO IT NOW~* (there are still dirty dishes in the sink that didn't fit in the dishwasher but it's better than nothing)
Good for you!! Don’t wait until you feel like it because that day is not going to happen. Steady progress will get you where you want to be. Good luck!!
I feel like my rolls are only ever nat 1 or nat 20 when it comes to cleaning motivation. I’m working on upping my modifiers so I can still do average work on a low roll.
You’re my favorite organizer! Too cute and great ideas and I love seeing clover. I made adorable Maltese printer paper labels for my toddlers cube organizer to help my husband and mom find her stuff when I wasn’t here and my daughter ripped them all up! Made me so sad so that didn’t work for us. I do a quick timed 5 minute clean up and organization after I get both my kids to bed and I usual accomplish a lot more than I expected. Highly recommended this technique even if you don’t have kids.
Thank ..I luv the labeling idea …cuz I know where the items belong .. but hubby doesn’t .. and visa versa .. thank you .. please keep these tips coming.. 😊
I just watched this for the first time this morning and, Kay, you broke the back of my problem. I'd dealt with lots of un-housed clothes yesterday, knowing I had too many tees even as I found places to neatly tuck them away in drawers and on shelves. My excuse: too hot to try them on, but they were sorted and stored by use in different places so could basically pass muster. You brought me back to those with this video today: I'm going to pull ALL of them out onto the bed (as soon as I make it)...basically confronting myself with the sheer number, and deciding. Perfect season to donate many of them without even trying them on...I'll just know. (Most of those tees didn't make it onto my body last year either.) This was another "never too late" situation, finding this year-old video at just the right time! So, many thanks, Kay. Love the channel, your inspiration, enthusiasm, candor and support.
Great tips. I’m one of those who likes to put my coats & jackets on hooks. There’s no way I can be bothered to put them on a coat hanger in a cupboard. I also don’t have the room in my house for one of those. I also prefer to store stuff without lids on. So much easier.
All good tips! What I have to overcome right now is, “Well, maybe I would use it when things get back to normal.” (when I am no longer wfh my office job in my gym shorts since I don’t have a/c) “Maybe” ….well, that means I compromise…which means half of it goes.
OMG! Yes!! Preach it!! I especially love your advice about buying “quality” items. I see all these videos about people organizing with dollar store bins…I’m thinking, “girl! Those aren’t going to last! Go to the Container Store and get some good ones that will look nicer!” Lol 😂
I totally agree. In the UK we have Poundland & some of the storage boxes are total rubbish. I’ve seen a couple that were actually split. That could hurt someone’s fingers. I’d much rather pay a bit more for better quality containers. I’m also the same way with clothes.
Oh, thank goodness!! I'm normal. I have a habit of putting things away in drawers or boxes and if I don't label I can never find what I'm looking for. Out of sight, out of mind. The hubs says I "put it away too well" ALL the time.
Thanks Kay, that was a super useful refresher on some great habits. You mentioned at the start 'block scheduling' and I wasn't really sure what you meant by that. Could you do a vid explaining it in a bit more detail? Best wishes to you and the King of Side Eye! :-)
I really need to start doing the “do it now”! I’m so lazy and procrastinate all the time. I never get anything done, ever. My depression and anxiety plays a huge part in that though. I have no insurance so I can’t get meds to help so I just watch your videos to help me!
Sending hugs to you, my friend. Do it now…it’s hard. I was the #1 best professional procrastinator. It’s a hard habit to get into but once you get it, you GET IT
I'm so glad to hear you've been working out and stuff!! Also, I loved this video. I am working on mindful shopping. I'm going to be someone who uses all 10
I have a dishwasher but don’t use it 😳 lol. I have just always done them by hand. I’m Hispanic so maybe it’s a “culture” thing? 🤔 haha My husband’s mom (who is Caucasian) thinks it’s ridiculous that I choose to wash them by hand lol 🤣😂🤣
@@Iris-gy2mi lol! 🤣😂🤣 In our last home, we lived there for 15 years and I think I used it MAYBE 5 times…and that was only because one of my kids’ friends would open it looking for a dish (🤦🏽♀️😂🤣) and I realized it smelled FUNKY lol the seals dried out and from lack of use & it leaked-THEN i had the perfect excuse to NOT use it, much to my husband’s “shagrin” 🙄😂
I love this list. And the last tip, I learned the hard way after we went down the Funko Pop rabbit hole. Now, if we buy something, it better serve a good purpose and have somewhere to go!
Kay that was helpful, but I need you here!!! I've had to move my mother in and now need to condense my closet space considerably. It's literally killing me to get rid of so many pieces of clothing that I do wear. Yes, I have 50 pair of pants, but some are winter, summer, solid, print, crop, ankle, full length, wide leg, skinny, straight. HELP!!! I work in Corp. America 5 days a week even thru the pandemic. I like to look bright & beautiful to match my personality🥰 I'm totally serious - I just can't see how to do this. I've just gotten rid of (6)six black contractor bags full of clothing, pulling out things that did not spark joy and honestly, I can't even tell. I'm still left with a closet full and nowhere to put it. TFS!
How do i train my husband to stop piling his “kickit clothes” on a chair or ottoman in our bedroom? ! I have hooks in his closet and I shouldnt have to remove furniture or hang his clothes on the hooks! Ugh 😩!
You shouldn't have to remove the furniture, but you still should remove the furniture. Habits are hard do break and nagging isn't going to work. Remove the furniture to another part of your home until he breaks the habit, a few months later try bringing it back. I think of breaking habits - my own including - as training a puppy. You change the environment and then say No! when you see the wrong behavior. :)
