Hi Graham and Roz, even though we're all familiar with quite a few of Stephen Foster's songs it's well worth delving in to find some of the lesser known ones. I can see how this song could be a bit of a dirge if it was played very slow, but you make it sound very hopeful. It's a new one to me and after hearing your version I wouldn't want to hear it any other way. A great choice indeed.
