As much as we (and I) complain about all of the problems we have in modern life I’m really really glad I was born in this time period.

I was in a prison riot in 1995 that left 2 dead and many hurt. Just the sounds of people being hit and kicked will always be in my brain. I saw a man crawl begging for help while his guts were coming out. It was disturbing and scary as hell. I can't imagine 60,000 going at it with swords!!!
I know one thing.. our ancestors had to be some pretty tough people, all down the line from the very beginning of our species. The hardships, diseases, horrific wars and starvation etc- they all survived it to enable us to be here in present day.
I’ve thought this many times. The plight of human beings is truly an amazing one!

Fascinating. The story really came to life for me when both armies tracked along opposite sides the river, the French eager to force engagement while the English desperately trying to evade.

My ancestors were involved in the "Wars of the Roses" and were participants at Towton and Bosworth. I admire these men, on both sides, who fought such a brutal war. I'm a pretty tough guy, but wonder how I would have held up.
You probably would have died from some disease before you even made it onto a battlefield.

I know, I too wonder about the same thing, not just the times during the civil wars, but about 14th or 10t century Europe, or the Roman Republican or Imperial periods, during the early Greek city states or the time of Sumer.
I think my mind would be excited, my heart would be super excited, - but I'm afraid I must suggest, that my body would be super dead ! 🥴
It all kinda feels like to me as though I were thumbing through a book about all of mankind's time here on Earth, and as I neared my-own time and the turning of pages grew ever slower, I feel like these folks above would rather end-up being on the very same page as myself, and just yesterday. These people and times, places and events, are really just over your shoulder.
And Towton, that battle is legendary ! -

Richard II Plantagenet is a first cousin, I'm not sure who was in it. I should search for a list of combatants at Towton and see who I have an my Ancestry bingo card.

I have visited Towton battlefield and am going again next week. I had ancestors who fought in that battle and in the battle of Bosworth field. I am a descendant of Anne, the daughter of Richard Plantagenet as well.
I cant imagine how excellent this video would be if it wasn't saturated with ads every 90 seconds.
I forget about ads since I have premium. I don't have cable or satellite so paying $14 a month to download and have no ads is worth it. The best feature is being able to turn my screen off and sleep while listening to a video like this.

I feel so incredibly certain that I understand why the militiamen were buried in their armour.

The Danish mercs likely understood that the militia had been locked out of the city they were trying to protect, choosing then to essentially fight to the death, in a battle in which their loosing would have been a forgone conclusion.
As professional soldiers, it’s doubtful this sacrifice would have been lost on the Danish kings men, nor the would it the king himself.
As far as the value goes, they had too much of it already waiting for them. I don’t think anyone mourned their decision to bury the militiamen in their armour as opposed to loot it for its value.
Yes. They were an invading, plundering army, but they were still human, and soldiers at that. I truly believe they let their adversaries be buried in their armour as a way to honour them.

I’m not sure I can take people seriously when there’s only one building on a site and it takes them 15 years to locate it because someone moved the front door.

King Edward IV was crowned king during this battle. He was one of the better kings but in the end the Tudors came and started lobbing heads off and changing religions and things, so….yeah the Linkin Park song ‘in the end’ seems appropriate

The War of the Roses, talk about the ultimate Family Feud. I don't think anyone involved in that one cared what the survey said though.
Think about this. It was like a decade before Columbus sets sail to find the new world. We think about this time as though it were shortly after the Roman’s. But it was over a thousand years after them. Man really didn’t advance much until 150 years ago
Rome fell in 1453 with Emperor Constantine XI
And Lief Erikson was in Nfld before Columbus hit an island, by 500 years.
This was a few hundred years after the Vikings were in Canada.
The industrial age was only approx 1850s
Egyptians went to a America far before Columbus he was like the 450 person to go there and he was evil and horrible to the natives
yep they got tired of killing off one another from Europe so they sought out new killing grounds such as they did in America and had a field day at it with my ancestors here in America👍 they killed off up to 60 million of them.
It's insanity how the previous archeologists didn't excavate each skeleton completely before moving on to the next. It must have been total madness trying to build skeletons with bones that belonged to the same person
Professional archaeology is relatively new. It was the domain of hobbyists for a long time especially in the Victorian days.

Today it is easy to admire the architecture. These buildings and the religious practices behind them are part of the reason there is so much suffering in the world.
It must have really sucked sliding around the snow and freezing mud in those shitty armoured shoes

Chivalry certainly did exist on the battlefield. Chivalry is misunderstood to mean fighting with honor and protecting the innocent and all that, however it really represents the vows made by a knight during their knighting ceremony, which could be anything. The knights vows were whatever they chose to make during the ceremony this could include fighting with Honor and protecting the innocent or it could mean fighting aggressively and never losing a battle or avenging a friend or serving a king or a lord or another nobleman it could be to travel lands, it can be to sire children. A medieval knights vows could literally be anything. chivalry meant nothing more than upholding those vows which sometimes included fighting honorably and protecting the innocent but those were not the vows every knight took.

People seem to forget that chivalry was for nobles for the most part. The common soldier was not subject to it and so inevitably they murdered each other when opposed so that the other guy didn't get them first
The crest on the Visby armor... Could it be a hint at the war of the roses? Three roses for three houses. Tudor, York and Lancaster.

Completely different time, world view, and lifespan. It's pointless to place moral judgement on history (although inevitably we are lured in). However, that does not mean romanticize it. But, we can judge the present, use history to understand from whence our issues came, AND FIX THEM.

Them not taking the armor off of the bodies has to do with the honor of the Dead fighting well. They weren't trained they were outnumbered and yet they stood their ground even though they were back against the corner and they fought to the end and they were fighting Danes. Danes are well known for being those types of warriors holding honor and respect above just about all else.
So for these people to have fought them so bravely they're showing them their honor by letting them keep their armor and burying them with it because that's what they would do with their dead.
I thought it had to do with the time of year and how quickly the bodies started decaying.
@@shaggyrumplenutz1610 Its probably a combination of multiple things. But the fact they buried them to begin with rather than letting sit out and rot shows the level of respect they are showing. Usually Danes would only take time to bury and honor their own dead, not the enemy's dead.

I thought, conversely, that their was actually a knightly ritual of the opposite - of stripping the enemies "iron", their armor, off their bodies. I suppose the point might be that you can tell a lot of how the belligerents viewed each other by whether they left their armor on?
Bullshit, battles weren't chivalrous and nor was the aftermath. No one leaves money on the dead to rot because of some stupid idea like "honor"
Money is money. Valuables are valuable, regardless of how they were obtained. The only reason you leave arms and armor on the battlefield is because it's not worth taking. Either their gear was so trash and outdated that it was worthless or the body was too decayed to strip
1:25 So in melee fighting it was probably stabbing and cutting at anyone not looking or double teaming anyone in front. Leg kicks in modern Kick Boxing or MMA come to mind. Two groups stabbing and probing, those just behind stabbing at exposed parts.

What makes these Graves unique was that the gotlanders were buried with their armor. For obvious reasons this was not usually done.
Armor was usually super expensive right? They’d strip it and reuse it? Why we’re they typically not buried in their armor?

It is very certain that the Tudors did everything possible to erase any positives references to Richard III, who, by all unbiased accounts, was an excellent ruler. They would not wished to have any Shrine exist due to his benevolence.

FYI, Richard even had the field plowed for the remaining bones and teeth of the Lancastrians, and had them properly buried elsewhere, with all honors. Look it up. Richard wasn´t a bad king at all. Quite the contrary. And he fought in the midst of this very battle. Not at the outskirts. And survived. With his 80 degree scoliosis. What an astounding fighter he must have been!

Them all being from England and knowing that new buildings were just built over defunct older structures and not considering that possibility makes me question the worth of their degrees.
It’s going to be hard to lop a foot clean off of someone that’s on their back kicking up, but if you have your weight all standing in one leg, like you would when trying to reach in for a cut. Same with cuts to the inside of the leg, when lunging forward you step in, this exposed your lead leg and the inside is more exposed, usually at a more oblique angle so the cut could bite in.
You could definitely be right tho, certainly men were routed and killed in flight often, but I think their explanation is more likely from the evidence shown

Richard III was not the "successor" of Edward IV: it was Edward V, son of Edward IV. He was never 'crowned' but he was the recognised successor. It was not necessary to be crowned to be King. Edward VIII was never crowned.
Not only is this not the dark ages, it isn't even the Middle Ages.

No, so that his brother could be king. Richard III stole the crown from his brother's heirs. 2 boys that he had murdered. This is why he was so hated.
Edward IV “won” the wars of the roses, at least for a time, and he ruled for 22 years. His son Edward was supposed to succeed him, but his brother Richard usurped the throne and the child under his care disappeared. That’s why people hate Richard so much.

If the militiamen were using shield wall tactics, apparently it was a common tactic to attack the only part of the rank of men that is not covered by the shield wall, the lower legs.

I’m watching while commenting and I’ll delete if I come across the answer, but it seems most of the deceased were not buried with their armor. Would they really have taken the time to remove it before burying someone?
I'm guessing it depended on the circumstance. If you were killed and were on the losing side your swords and armor would be taken as it was worth a lot. If you die and you are on the winning side you might get buried in your armor?
I doubt they wore full body armour like that, if they found tips of scabbards tgey woukd have found more bits of metal from the armour i would have thought.
I get that we find all of this amazing. However I assume these people were buried for a reason. Why dig them up again only to have their bones stored in shelves? I'm firm believer in letting the dead rest and respecting how they buried per their customs.
From a practical perspective, if we keep every grave in situ, we'll need a lot more war, disease, & early death to have room for the growing population of the world.
At a certain point a dead body starts to stink, it Ramps up quick so you better deal with asap or just get used to the smell and health hazard but at a certain point they just smell like dirt and aren’t much health hazard.
Personally I’d think it would be nice to get out and stretch your legs after a couple hundred years in the ground…
In all seriousness, if I’m dead then I doubt I’ll care what happens to my remains but maybe that’s just me, being outdoors a lot really shows me how nature recycles

Why would dead warriors be buried in armor? Chainmail and plate armor suits were expensive and hard to make-why throw it away? Or was there superstion about wearing a dead man's armor?
Sounds like maybe the gravediggers got to them before the pickers did. You're right, that stuff was very expensive and they wouldn't have just left it.
The battle of Visby - all the dead were buried in armour - because it was summer and the bodies swelled up , and also because their armour was outdated

The Gotlanders were said to have been operating as mercenaries and pirates. The bodies swelling in the heat and causing such a stench meant they just wanted to bury it. Much of it had leather and cloth so it would have been worthless from the putrid smell. Not many weapons were recovered.
they theorize about this in the video btw... maybe the danes/mercs were pressed for time and/or maybe they didn't want to deal with the potential of disease as the armor was regarded low quality.
basically even though the armor was valuable, it wasn't valuable enough.
you also gotta take into account that they would need to drag all this heavy metal along with them on their wagons and ships.
imagine having the armor sets of just 100 men, that's like at least a ton or two of weight to carry around + all the other stuff they need to carry with them, like their own armor/weapons, food, tents etc.
Something is off with this video, it's zoomed in too much.
It's obvious to me when I see the legs and feet cut like that that a lot of these men were basically routed and retreating their backs against the wall so to speak they would do what any person being killed with a blade would do that is fall down backwards protecting the head and torso while trying to kick at your assailant putting your legs in the air just like a UFC fighter does when they get hit and fall down trying to preserve the position of full guard and jiu-jitsu so while they were flailing and kicking up at their attackers it was a feudal tactic of a dying man and that would explain so many like wounds and feet wounds especially to feet cut off in one blow you kick your feet up while on your back with your legs closer together and they're struck in the ankle as if striking one limb! That would explain the wounds to the legs and ankles from the inside of the leg .

Edward didn't beat and kill Warwick until 1471 about a decade after the battle of Towton.
Because Richard fought at the battle and had this chapel built to commenorate both of his friends and enemies who fought at the battle. He even had the field PLOWED for the remaining bones of his enemies, and had them reburried.
Were did these English kings get the men for these armies that fought for them since the very beginning since basically the Dark Ages to the 1800's Napoleon. That's millions of guy's 🤔
Ok the lady talking about agincourt and how the French army would have been “weary” and “running out of food” as well really doesn’t seem like she knows what she’s talking about lmao. The battle was literally on French mainland soil, in what world would the French be starving on French soil….is she saying they were unable to feed their current population as is? That’s literally all they’re doing when they’re in their own lands with said army, the food just has to be more concentrated in the area for the time being. The English were on foreign soil and needed to maintain extremely long supply lines(for the time, supply lines across the English Channel and a ways into France are fairly long and difficult to maintain in that time). She seemed to really underplay the significant French advantage in the battle, either out of some biased view for whatever reason or just to play devils advocate. I get trying to critique common misconceptions, but even today ALL rumors or myths/legends are based on or have some inherent truth they’re based off of to begin with. The same goes for agincourt, sure it could be exaggerated at times I’m sure but that’s just the way it is when a glorious victory is achieved in the face of insurmountable odds.
