As Daniel Mann mentioned after Aston Villa's 2019 Play Off Triumph over Derby "If at first you don't succeed come back next year and try again". After the heartbreak of 1999 Gillingham laid the ghosts of Manchester City to rest to complete a memorable season for the Gills after they had a fantastic FA Cup run to the quarter finals which saw them dispatch 2 Premier League clubs along the way in the form of Bradford and Sheffield Wednesday 3-1 in both games the latter of going down in FA Cup folklore after Nicky Southall's stunning volley that wrapped up the win before they fell to eventual winners Chelsea. It was a great match as well against a very good Wigan side who under the late John Benson went unbeaten in the first 26 games of the season just too many draws away from home cost the Latics automatic promotion.
Steve Butler - played one game on loan at Bournemouth in 1992. Was fantastic - but got recalled by Watford straight after the match. Shame as we had such a lack of firepower.
The Ultimate Irony is the next season that they finally met again in 2004-05 Wigan went up to the Premiership and have stayed there ever since and the Gills went down and have stayed in League One and Two ever since. Still was great to see Gillingham get up after being robbed the season before!
@railman01 Remember in 2000 when we took 7,000 to your dump and a another 2,000 of us north enders (me included) were sat in the home end? And then to add insult to injury it was the night we sealed promotion. Dream on little latics! Forever in our shadow!
@moss1969 Er, I don't know what game you were at mate but there wasn't even a contest in terms of the noise the two sets of fans created (unsurprisingly). 8000 is a pathetic turnout for a play-off final.
Little Wigan taking the absolute piss out of football. We don't need fans. Or a 40,000 rent a crowd (given that you averaged little over 9,000 in Division One 00/01...where did all the fans go?). PS. We also averaged more fans than you when we did eventually make it to the 2nd tier. And we actually made it to the Premiership where we STUNK the league out for over 300 matches. And we had a European Tour. Little Wigan. The annoying floaty turd that won't flush. Love. It.
Oh I remember this season. It was the season we won the title and sealed promotion at the JJB. lol at you small time clubs. We're the one and only North End!!!!!!!!
Once wigan get to the semi final of the FA Cup people instantly start talking about the FA Cup no longer being all that important. Its as if Wigans success (albeit due to an easy route) demines the tournament.
@moss1969 Yeah but, all honesty mate, Wigan have been crap in the Premier league and you have one of the poorest supports ever, you only to 8 thousand to this game and we took 50 thousand and your stadium is 1/2 empty and in the Priemier League you should have a full stadium every week.
@moss1969 Yeah, Wigan are in the Premiership (just!), and Gills are in League 2. But Gills are up with the leaders and going for promotion, Wigan are rock bottom staring relegation in the face. Whose fans do you think are having the better time? You've had a good few years at the top, but it was never going to last!
+railman01 Oh deary me? What happened to the plastic latics? Almost back where you belong with Lancaster City. Still at least there are plenty of similar sized clubs like Yeovil and Blackpool to keep you company LOL. I guess the youth of Wigan will grow up following the mighty North End now. Oh well. Enjoy your season in league one, en route to ground sharing with Chorley.
@MrRogerKing Were are you now ? Were are we now ? You can't even muster a result against the yokels of Yeovil. And just who is Graham Westley? A journeyman player and journeyman manager who has already managed to annoy his players by texting tactics and team selections in the middle of the night. Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. Thirteenth and sliding. League two beckons, I reckons, Mr King.
@MrRogerKing Oh please, stop it, LMFAO,, I've just cracked a rib yor post was that funny! Methinks you'll be playing Morecambe long b4 we do sunshine. Now run along.
What a day, what a team. Best day ever as a Gills Supporter.
Just hope we get to these heights again.

Fantastic day out, still one of the best days as a Gills fan. Great memories and such a deserved win.
We filled Wembley stadium up on that day, I reckon the whole of Medway was there! When Thomson scored it was absolute carnage.
6:32 when we scored the crowd went insane, I got pushed 2-3 rows away from where I was sitting
I was at this match with my dad, the ONLY time i have ever been to wembley.
Old Wembley so much better then new Wembley.
The Division 2/League One Playoff Finals always provide cracking games as opposed to the boring 1-0s you get in the race for the Premier League.

robbed the Season before who are you kidding MCFC
Gills took some support with them that day
Loving the Gillingham chant, even though Wigan just equalised.
Good job the Gills did win in the end because that was never a penalty...
