*REGARDING TAXES- PLEASE READ* I've been getting some questions about taxes...yes I do write off the things I purchase at the end of the year and this includes not only beauty products that are used in content creation, but also the room in our home that I film in can be written off, plus any equipment such as cameras, lighting, software. Basically anything I use for business purposes. But as a sole proprietor, my "business" taxes go on my *personal* tax return which includes my husband's income. And since my business isn't separate from our household income, the amount that I write off doesn't make much of a dent at all. It lowers our combined income slightly but not enough to lower our taxes by much. Not only that, but since my "employer" (aka Google) is not witholding taxes from my paycheck each month, I end up owing thousands of dollars to the government every year. I have to set aside roughly 40% of what I make to give back in taxes. I've looked into registering my business as an LLC, but it would still go on my personal tax return, unfortunately. The only way to keep it separate is to register it as a corporation which isn't something I want to do...I would have to issue stock in my "company", hold "meetings" where I include meeting minutes, etc...it's a lot of hassle and too many rules for a small business like mine. We have also looked into filing separately as a married couple but there are downsides to that as well and we discovered that it wouldn't make sense to do so.
You should be paying quarterly estimates, that is your version of withholding (else you're blowing it on penalties). Also ~30 cents on the dollar isn't negligible for deductions. That's thousands!
@@TeaTinted in the past the penalties for not paying quarterly have been small, but every year that I make more money they're starting to get to a point where I don't want to have to pay them so this year I do plan to start paying quarterly for the first time. And without saying how much our family income is...yes it is negligible in the grand scheme of things. Lowering our income by $12k does almost nothing.
@JenPhelps Dear Jen, Life is so very complicated, isn't it! What's most important is you love what you do... you share it with others... and you're exceptional in your videos! You re-ignited a passion for better self-care in this old lady! Your videos gave me respite and sanctuary from this year's election stress. I'll keep coming back here for the beauty, the makeup artistry, and the adventures in color and ✨️ sparkle! Sincerely, Kelly
I realized recently that I buy makeup like a beauty channel and meanwhile I work remote! It’s ridiculous and I put myself on a strict budget for 2025. Love that you are doing it too!
I do the same and now my makeup is overwhelming and I have my favorites in a small bag I use on the daily and the rest just sits there gathering dust. I feel kinda dumb cause I paid so much for all of it every time I look at it. On the bright side I’ve now tried so much makeup that I know my favorites in each category 😂
@streetfamily6909 OMG! What you said about yourself is exactly me.....Scary. As soon as I watch a video, I will get my phone and place an order. I have a room full of makeup ( like a utuber). My biggest weaknesses are eyeshadows and foundations. Like you, I use a handful. That's why I am hoping Jen will do dupe the new pallets with her stash. I have to stop buying so much. It's not a healthy thing for me. I need to save money
Eyeshadow-related video ideas: when a new high-end palette comes out, show us similar looks that could be done with existing palettes and don’t buy the new one. And when you do decide to buy a new one, show us several looks you can do with it in multiple videos.
I saw another UA-camr do this and I really enoyed it - she took a picture of a new eyeshadow pallet that she was interested in then chose the shades that most attacted her. Then she went through the pallets she already owned and tried to find those shades or ones very close and do a look with those. She explained this was her way of not getting swept up by a new release and still enjoying new looks. If you wanted to try this I know I would enjoy that video.
I'm a disabled frail senior on a fixed income. This year, I did spend about $130 on skin care and simple age appropriate makeup... mostly CeraVe and Elf from Walmart. Feeling that the current geopolitical environment may put my income and healthcare funding in jeprody... I'm going "no buy" on makeup, skin care (refills only), and clothing this year. My goals this year... survive... take good care of myself physically and mentally as my funds will allow... and treat others with equal-opprotunity love, dignity, fainess, and compassion.
Buying what we Need instead of just what we want is always the better choice, and if it saves you money, at the end of the year, you usually have saved enough for something you really want..even as big as a holiday, or some other luxury.😊❤
I pray 🙏🏻 the same my dear 🙏🏻 if a refill is needed I use cvs , Walmart coupons at times I pay 0$ watch your coupons or Walmarts dupe brands can’t beat there prices on anything !
I watched the documentary on Netflix a few days ago and it really hit me hard. It's called "Buy now, the shopping conspiracy" and it really helped to open my eyes. Not just financially, but also the waste I'm contributing too. Even if i declutter things won't go away. They just end up somewhere else and eventually on a landfill 😔 I highly recommend watching it if you have buying/spending/collecting/hoarding issues! No judgement here, because I need to control my own (bad) habits too ❤
This is such a refreshing take from an influencer. I did a low buy in 2024 and the only things I ran out of and had to replace was concealer and mascara. I did buy a couple new things but spent under $300 the whole year on makeup. When I started I thought I would be so excited for 2025 to come and allow myself to buy again but I love what I have so I’m just continuing on the low buy this year. I realized my love for beauty comes from the time I get to spend pampering myself and the new techniques to try not only new products. Good luck I’m excited for your content this year.
I'm 2023 I did a no buy year aside from foundation, mascara, and skin care when I had to replace them. But, same concept as your low buy year. I had so much stuff that I needed to use. I also have so much stuff too my daughter the year before that in 2022-that I bought & just never used. Now I'm art manageable makeup level & use the stuff I've got, because it's stuff I actually enjoy using.
I couldn’t agree more! I finally stopped buying in search of the next best product and just started using the ones I already know I love. I replaced only those loved products as needed. And let me tell you, I enjoy doing my makeup so much more now. I love it every time, rather than trying something new and then regretting spending the money because it’s not the miracle product I was told it was.
We all feel the same way. Corporate America is going to have a rude awakening when they find out the consumers are no longer throwing money away. Just like fast food learned, the hard way. There's two Americas: one with too much money and the rest of us with barely enough to survive. Like Bob Dylan song: "Things they are a changing"
If we stop over buying/consuming they will have decrease production at some point. It's all the better they oppress workers in the US and downright exploit and take advantage of people in developing countries in every single way to bring all this stuff. This year walking through the malls/stores brought on intense existential anxiety for me. The sheer amount of just stuff and things we have and made that just sit there is overwhelming. It all runs together and becomes meaningless. You start thinking about who will use it, will it even get sold? we took the materials from the planet and it is now going to waste.
@@danieldalton6544yes but, I continue to be shocked at how much people are still paying for delivery like grub hub or something. People eat out a lot and then pay more for it to be delivered. It’s unbelievable to me. Where is this extra money coming from?
I'm doing a no buy this year. Jen. I'm not a UA-camr but I do love makeup. But honestly, over the past year or so I've looked at my collection and realized I literally have all the colors I would ever want to work with. I've played with different foundations, and guess what? Wet and wild tinted moisturizer looks the best on my skin, and it's $6 a bottle! Now, we really need to start working on paying our house off and getting ready for retirement. I would love to see a 'shop, my stash' series from you, as well as a 'do you really need this'? You have a wonderful collection, and I'd love to see some of those oldies but goodies again!
Jen's entire Christmas Vlogmas was based on "shop my stash" principles. Did you miss those fun videos? She had her son choose 24 items to stock her "advent calendar" of little gift bags, one per day. Such a great idea!
@@MyCleverHandle yes, I saw them. I love Jen’s Vlogmas every year! 👍 This years Vlogmas kinda gave me the idea. I think a ‘use this if you don’t have that’ would be fun too! ❤️
Not makeup but clothes. Seeing the state of the landfills worldwide makes me sick to my stomach and I do not have a jet setting lifestyle to spend so much on apparel. Thank you for your honesty. I know when I had a frank conversation with my husband about my spending I was embarrassed but it helped me to stop. The hiding just made it worse. You are so refreshingly relatable!
I love that people care about this stuff more now. Temu and Shein are awful companies and contribute to the landfills and are horrible employers. I think everything someone does to help this planet, is a valuable thing.
I always appreciate your honesty, Jen. For me your channel isn't just about makeup, it's about life lessons, and I enjoy learning right along with you! 🥰
I’m aiming to do “low buy” this year. I literally don’t need any new makeup or clothes. I canceled Prime to help curb my impulse shopping. I’ll probably delete the apps soon too bc I’m always browsing them. I also unsubscribed from the majority of store emails to minimize temptation. “No buy” isn’t realistic for me but if I can be more thoughtful about purchases, that will be great.
I found out I’m being laid off in a week, so I’m definitely doing a no-buy. I have plenty of stuff I want to use up anyway. I read someone on a different video I recently watched said, “I’m done with a makeup collection. I want to collect money” and I think that’s where I’m at right now. I want to see how much I can save monthly and how much I can cut out unnecessary spending. I’ve got all I really need anyway.
Would love to see a few more no buy months where you then bring out something you love that you already have. When you did this before it encourages us to go back over our stash to see what we’ve might forgotten and get a thrill discovering it again! Thank you Jen these more thoughtful videos that give us time to rethink priorities are wonderful. It feels almost like a support group! 😅❤
It’s so refreshing to hear a larger beauty UA-camr talk about this! I started my channel with a no buy year back in 2020 and I’m doing another no buy year in 2025. Life is too expensive and I’ve gotten myself in so much debt that I need to re-establish my financial health and work through the makeup I already own!
I'm so happy an influencer has said this , im struggling badly , I let 2024 take over with influencers during postpartum to make me happy or get that joy . When it all comes I get that joy for 5 mins and move on to looking buying another make up thing . I'm taking steps by trying to do protect pan as I genuinely have £1000s of pounds of make up around my room , thank you for mentioning this as I believe I can cut back , focus on better things and want to follow people like you where honestly matters .
Honestly you make me feel so seen 💗 Postpartum was when some loose shopping habits started becoming an unhealthy coping mechanism for me - and then Covid soon after was like pouring gasoline on the fire. Good for you for recognizing it and deciding to make a change. Don’t be too hard on yourself, and remember every new day really is a new opportunity to do better. I hope you find a fountain of true joy to fill you, and please get mental health care if you need it 😘
What helps me is when I see something I want I put it on a wishlist. When I run out of say a foundation I go to my list and pick one. This allows me to try new things but make sure I finish what I have
Something that has been helping me is to add it to cart online & then walk away, when I come back to add something else 9/10 I take the last thing out of the cart. Sounds silly but it’s been helping me a lot. Those impulse buys are challenging, they make it so easy to do.
That's such a great tip! I used to do that and it really works...especially if you're an impulse buyer (which I am). Once the excitement/hype dies down, you realize you didn't really want it that badly.
@monicapatton1405 It's not silly at all, over the years I found out that it really fulfilled the urge to buy most of the things. And there's a great satisfaction in adding in the cart what you want. When the time comes, I often wonder "why did I add that in my cart or as a favourite?! “ And after a few months, if I still fancy it, I will buy when there's a sale. I only buy when there are sales 😁
I started keeping a beauty spending tally a few years ago. That first year, 2021 I think, I was shocked. Five figures - and I don't have a channel! I've also been keeping a list of everything I buy, and as I look back, so much of what I was buying was going unused. Big bottles of scents I'd never smelled, skincare I didn't need, fad releases that just amounted to ... junk. This practice has gradually helped me shop more deliberately. Now, I watch a dozen reviews of a new product I want, instead of buying it immediately. I ask myself if the item is unique for my collection, if I want it because I'll love it or because I just want to WANT it, and if I'm buying it for the person I wish I were, rather than the person I am. Several years in, my collection is far more curated, I enjoy it way more, and I've reined in that spending. As daunting as this sort of project is, it's worth it. Love this, Jen, thank you!
Rules I live by: shipping, if it ain’t free, I don’t bother. No instacart, no DoorDash. Ever. Don’t care how good the sale is, if I already have it plus a backup, I don’t buy it. Everything has a shelf life. I look for sales on EVERYTHING. I think it’s a good idea to keep track of purchases bc they add up for sure. Happy New Year Jen. Love the eye shadow.
This is such an important discussion! I’ve been reeling in my spending and plan to be even more discerning about my purchases this year. I’ve realized it’s less about the makeup and more about the dopamine rush. Dopamine is one hell of a drug 😬
You have no idea how much I needed to hear this. I just tallied up my spending for the last year too. I’m ashamed to say, I’ve spent more money on makeup and skincare products than an internet influencer. 🤦🏻♀️ I have a problem, and I’ve got to address it. I can’t carry it on into the new year. I have so much makeup, I can’t even enjoy the stuff I have. This isn’t a humble brag. This is a confession in hopes of spurring some change in myself. Budgets are a great idea. ❤
Maybe look at it this way. If the amount of makeup you already have and bought last year didn’t fulfill you and bring you true happiness, then makeup ain’t gonna do it. It’s an empty never ending path. I posted this already but I realized that the buying wasn’t making me happy. However using what I already have is very enjoyable. Just my thoughts 😊
I honestly think this will be great for your channel. A lot of us over spend and impulse buy and many are looking to quit over consuming. Sounds like something we can all work on together. That said I love your reviews and recommendations & will look forward to them. TikTok is closing shop & a lot of people are going to be coming back this way so I think your new content will really be good for your channel after the exhaustive overconsumption of TikTok. This was a great topic. Happy New Year and cheers to good spending habits on quality products you will enjoy 🥂
It'll be interesting to see what happens with TikTok but they're in for a shock if they come over here and expect to keep pushing overconsumption like they've been doing. The UA-cam audience seems to be past that point now. Happy New Year to you too! 🥰
@@JenPhelps I’ve seen several creators that had abandoned their platforms for TikTok suddenly come back in the past 2 weeks. Dominique, Nikki Tutorials etc. Also Lisa J who didn’t abandon YT but definitely prioritized TT did a video yesterday saying she was going to dedicate more time here & wanted to know if her YT audience wanted lives. This is an interesting conversation-for a lot of creators, even creators that are on all the apps-Abbey Young mentioned this and it isn’t just her- TikTok makes up the majority of their income. I have a lot of empathy for what they might be experiencing in this fearful time for them. I’m also curious what changes this will make as a whole to the way we do things on socials. The one thing that is for sure imo, if TikTok is forced to stop it’s going to not only rock the boat but it may completely capsize for some creators & change for all of us. I also think YT will scramble to make purchasing easier here and lives etc -guess we will see what happens but I’m definitely watching & curious 🍿
I think was a great conversation. I appreciate the transparency but also the thoughts about how and why it happened and how to change it. 2025 is a no or low buy for me, and this pushed me to do my own examination of spending, especially on makeup. Thanks for bringing this up!
You always impress me Jen with how much integrity you have and it's amazing to see you put it out on your channel. I guarantee not one other youtuber would ever do this!! The way the economy is about to change, I don't believe many will be able to afford buying much of anything. Thanks for your honesty, it's very refreshing!!
Consumers should be especially careful. You're not making any money from buying make up contrary to influencers. We only lose money and the only thing we get is the good 😅
Wow! When you put it on paper it’s very eye opening. To curb my spending I went old school. I’m only using cash. That way I’m not in bed at 11 pm buying stuff I don’t need, lol. I also spend a lot less at one time as well. Because I see what’s in my wallet, and you literally see it dwindle every time you spend. I spend less at the grocery store as well, not just personal items. My dad recommended it, he says it works like a charm and gave me a wink and a smile. Lol thanks dad
We have went cash only in our family and I'm honestly so shocked by the many places that do not accept cash. We went to an amusement park with our kids and no cash was accepted there. Thankfully we had our cards because we didn't check before hand if cash was accepted (that's on us) now I always check and so many places are card only. Especially if you live in the Chicago area
Love that you came to that realisation and that you are setting realistic goals for your makeup/beauty comsumption. It's like EVERYONE now is jumping into the "hit the pan" trend just for the sake of views. Some people seem not genuine about it, it starts with a "purge" and they keep buying things to make another purge again. Also, creators are setting ridiculously unrealistc goals for panning, etc. Some ideas: what about focusing on launches of brands you like the most (that are your niche or which videos work best)? A weekly poll to decide which products your viewers are interested on would also be great and engaging. Maybe having a video with the upcoming launches info prior the poll. Hoping you have an amazing 2025! I enjoyed your Advent Calendar
I’ve been out of control and I am not a beauty tuber. I work from home and wear makeup every other day. Thanks for being transparent! I need to stop stuffing my boredom with buying stuff.
1 of the reasons I watch you, bc you don't push products . And it's so helpful. Yah on incorporate better spending habits ❤. Many content creators have no buy times.
We all have cut our spending, so you are in good company. No buy or low buy is trending in 2025! Time to enjoy what we already own! Honestly not even interested in buying new products, l like shopping my stash. I will still watch your videos esp if you are not constantly buying stuff. Let’s see you create tons of new looks on your eyes & lips…with palettes you already own, lip liners & lipsticks. Gives your viewers inspiration. Happy New Year!
This is so timely and steeped in integrity. Money is tight, and many people are spending more than they make. It’s wonderful to see someone reminding us to be sensible with our money ❤
We know we are getting older when we long for what we used to do when we didn't have much. So much more contentment and pleasure, than having so much that all perspective is lost.
Oh this was excellent & so grounding. I truly think that when my work hours were cut in '23, that it was a blessing in disguise. By the time I retired last year, I had learned more disciplined spending habits; and I learned to truly appreciate what I have & get. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. And love for makeup since I live vicariously through you. I appreciate you being here for us !
@@LenaSheppard I love what you said here about learning to appreciate what you already have. I remember my mother only wore lipstick and powder and though she could’ve had much more, she still treated these like little treasures. These days we don’t seem to be inclined towards that, and your words gave me a wonderful memory to start my resolve for being grateful 🙏💕
@@CandidLy1I agree. I think we need to just stop the whole "I can afford it so I'm getting it" mindset and start living "mindfully" as they say. I'm not quite at the Swedish Death Cleaning phase (lol) but I have finally just stopped acquiring stuff I don't need.
This is an important topic and I hope more people lean this way! I’m starting to see people get sick of the overconsumption and wastefulness that is a part of the beauty community especially on UA-cam. I agree you don’t even spend a fraction of what some others do! I have big financial goals this year like paying off my car loan so I will be so careful about what im buying. Good luck on your journey I’m excited to hear your updates.
Thank you for your honesty and transparency about your spending Jen. I spent years trying to keep up with influencers and was buying beyond my means. I added up all of my beauty spending in 2020-2023 and it was thousands. Happy to say I haven't bought any makeup in almost a year and I'm enjoying what I have. It was hard at first, but now I realize how fast the trends move on and things don't even seem new after a few months. I'm continuing with my no buy in 2025 and plan to never go back to the overconsumption I was doing before. It is bad for the planet and bad for the wallet.
I enjoyed reading through all the supportive comments and ideas ladies ! I'm on a no buy this year and want to use what i have in my collection. I'm glad Jen has a new focus for 2025 and i look forward to her content even more!
I placed ONE order at Sephora this year. ONE. That’s the fewest I’ve made since I have ever shopped at Sephora, over 20 years ago. I definitely spent less this year, but still want to bring my spending down even more in 2025. I appreciate the transparency, Jen, and I’m looking forward to seeing more of your content in 2025! 🙏💖
I love that you will still be "in the know" with all the viral and new releases and will discuss them on your channel but also explain why the puchase would not be ideal for your complexion!
I love this! Personally, while I do love watching new product reviews, I often find it frustrating when I can't find the new products in-store because they're so new they're only online. I often end up searching through your old videos to find reviews of older products that I know I can get in-store at Target or Ulta! It would be really fun to see more "shop my stash" videos; full face of one brand videos (older products welcome!); a shop my stash where you pull out a category of product and recommend best buys for people who are looking for different things in a product (e.g "if you like metallic eyeshadow over glitter you'll like...if you didn't want to have to wear an eyeshadow primer you'll like..."). I actually love declutter videos because they are sort of like speed reviews; you usually end up saying what you like and don't like about the products while decluttering! As a time-crunched Mom on a budget I absolutely don't mind not seeing every new product reviewed. Excited to see what 2025 holds! Keep it up and thanks!
Right out of the gate, BEFORE watching this video: I have spent way too much on makeup last year, and many of those buys I regret. I live in a country where many of the hot brands are not available in store, so I have to go in blind and hope for the best. My favorite videos from you the past year have been those where you shop your stash, maybe even partly, to use something old - and hey, often times in the beauty world that "old" is just a couple of months old. Also my favorite mantra has become: "Can I dupe this with the Stone Cold Fox I already own?" So personally, I would hope for more "this new thing can be duped with xx old thing"-content!
I think a lot of people are reconsidering the amount of $$ they’re spending on makeup and other things that they may not need this year. I am trying a no buy in 2025 bc I have more than enough makeup and skincare to last the year. A lot of unopened products too. I know what you mean about that rush you feel when you buy something new though. I get excited over makeup too. I think you putting this video out and then checking in at the end of the month or whenever you do will help keep anyone who is trying to be more mindful of spending in check. I like it! We can do this together. Hope you have a happy and healthy New Year! Hugs 💖🥳🎆🎈🎉
I agree. New subscriber and I think this should be a series. Like every end of the month till next year. Something to track because it’s a major temptation and pressure for us with social media and on-line shopping. She should come up with triggers, tactics and psychological strategies we are susceptible too. It’s a real slippery slope.
I dont have the financial freedom to just buybuybuy but I do have the bad habit of not fully using what I have and even harder to get rid of things I might not use (make up especially), but I do get jealous/FOMO when I see other people showing and promoting 'the next best thing'. I am in the process of unsubbing from certain influencers who are.... way out of touch with reality Though the thing I dont like about makeup is that we need to buy and use them for a while to try if it will work out for us, and if it doesnt then we'd feel more inclined to buy something else without finishing the old one! That product is concealer for me. I still cannot find my holy grail 😭
I love seeing people be honest with themselves about money. I had an Ulta box from my $50 gift card from Christmas, and I was so excited. The same goes for ordering food out. If you only get it occasionally, it is so much better.
Your comments about not pushing us to buy things and not comparing our collection to yours have been helpful over the past year. Like a lot of people I realized I was spending too much and didn't need as much as I was buying, no matter how much I love makeup. I am 58 and have loved makeup since I knew it existed, I think I was four. 😂 When watching videos about the latest products, I've started thinking about what I own that is similar. I use the videos about new things as inspiration to use what I already have. ❤
It’s funny that you mention this. My plan is to enjoy what I have. I’m not saying I won’t buy anything, but I truly could buy nothing for years and not run out. Excited to see how this goes.
Gosh I love this video so much! I think with all that’s happening in the economy, life is hard! I’ve had to cut back so much on my makeup products, it’s hard. I think it’s always so frustrating seeing SO many content creators buying SO much stuff, then they post videos like look at these new clothes, new makeup, new this/that and it makes you feel bad about yourself bc you want to go get things but life is just hard and your just trying to get by. It’s just not reality for so many people. So I genuinely love you being open and mindful about things!! Thank you for that!
I am putting myself on a budget for yarn this year. I finally am able to "treat" myself to more expensive and luxurious yarns, but I also have to really be cognizant that I'm not just buying everything in sight because I like it. It's not a bad thing to have a budget and to not buy things just because you like them in the moment. We've really been trained to engage in conspicuous consumption since the 50s, and I feel like it's so prevalent because we see the insides of people's home, lives, hobbies etc so much more easily now.
Such a timely video, and glad to see all the support in the comments! I wish us all strength for when we’re challenged and grace if we slip and the will to keep trying toward low and no buys
Make up shopping totally brings out any obsessive compulsive tendencies I have. Yeah we’re not doing drugs but ordering online is definitely a dopamine hit for me!!! I’m sure you could probably right off your purchases as a tax deduction. What a great idea to track spending- you convinced me to do the same!!! Happy New Year!
Yes I can, but it doesn't save me that much. It just lowers my taxable income by that amount but I don't get anywhere close to the money I spent back. :(
I couldn’t get behind this idea more! I think you modeling the internal process of how to make intentional decisions is super smart and relevant! I also don’t know enough about make to know when I’m overlapping now and I am so looking forward to your feedback each month about what makes the cut and what doesn’t!
I not a content creator, but I often feel my collection is as big as one because I buy what I’m influenced to buy. My challenge to myself is to shop my stash this year. To only use what I have. Declutter what doesn’t work, and curate a collection that saves me money. Your video rings so true to me. I can’t wait to watch how this goes.
I love this! I think being budget conscious is important especially with the state of the economy. The overconsumption (and product pushing) nowadays feels suffocating. Cheers to good fortune 🥳
This is such a fantastic idea. I thought today that I bought way too much makeup last year and I want to cut my spending down drastically. I do not even have a channel. I'm on board with you Jen. I'm excited for this project! ❤🎉
I am really looking forward to your updates, Jen! I hold responsible spending up to the light, but struggle with my passion to purchase makeup. I'm here for this!
Jen, this is probably your best vid to date. This is why we trust you, and we tune into you. In the time of such horrendous cost of living globally, it might actually be such a blessing to have someone to deinfluence and guide into makeup that is worth the spend - whether lux or drugstore. Super excited to spend 2025 watching you. ❤
I really appreciate this video. I’ve purchased too much makeup over the years and having more than I need actually causes me stress. I’ve been decluttering makeup and unsubscribed from all beauty UA-camrs I was following except you Jen. I plan to use up what I already have before buying more.
Good on you, Jen! You are a good example. I think we need to redefine the meaning of ‘retail therapy’. You get that instant dopamine shot, but therapy should make you feel better. And your comments suggest that old thrill isn’t there and maybe even some remorse at times. I have only been buying replacement the past 2years, nothing new, and I gotta tell you, it feels GREAT!
And now you understand why I don't shop online. In the past 2 years, I've purchased one eyeshadow palette each from Nabla and Viseart and 2 sets of your excellent brushes from Doll 10. That's it. No other categories of goods; no gifts for anyone else, no housewares, clothing, shoes, accessories or anything else. I can do plenty of budget-blowing damage in person, and I regularly embrace the random surprises that turn up at several nearby TJMaxx/Marshalls stores. So restraint in others is so appreciated. Best of luck, and Thanks for the video!
I’m pretty much the same. I hate paying shipping. That’s money I could use on something else! If I’m not willing to go get it in store, I don’t want it that much.mIf I buy online it’s at like Ulta where I can pick up in store, Amazon where I get free shipping, somewhere where I have enough I plan to purchase where I’ll qualify for free shipping (not very often), or places where my only option is to buy online (and with those, its few and far between and needs to be something I’ve been considering for a while and researched a ton to know it’s something that will really work for me). I just can’t justify to myself to pay shipping on stuff I could go get myself. If I don’t wanna put the effort in to go and get it, I obviously don’t want it bad enough 😂
I am shocked at my Amazon spending. I am canceling the membership to force myself to stop that spending! I feel that Ulta is the best choice, but you are right about their shipping challenges. Thank you for your honesty.
I am scaling back and using what I have. Pretty much on a no buy unless something runs out and I do not have another like product to use. I have been tuned in to the response to over consumerism which is to simplify, declutter and be content. To be choosy on anything I purchase and wait to buy things so each purchase is more meaningful and has joy.... Just like you were talking about in your video. When we don't have a lot we really appreciate what we do have. Things have lost meaning to me when I can get whatever I want when I want.
Jen, I needed to hear this more than you know!! You are such an inspiration, and I applaud you for bringing light to a subject so many wouldn’t dare to touch! I know we come to you for your in depth reviews on beauty products, and you’re not really a lifestyle channel, but I could see you doing that so well. When you spoke about wanting to put that money toward things that matter like retirement and travel, and wanting to truly enjoy the things that you purchased, that resonated with me on another level! Thank you so much for making this video, I hope it reaches a lot of people that could benefit from this insight.
Girl I can't imagine what channels I watch like Morgan Turner and Steff's Beauty Stash must spend on makeup as they buy every new release. I would be interested to see more creators do a video like this. I do appreciate all of the reviews don't get me wrong but it's just makeup and there are other things that money can be spent on.
No judgement on anyone else who does reviews because it's an expensive business always having to have the latest new releases, but I've come to realize that for me it's too overwhelming to try to keep up with that.
They buy to earn. That's very different than for us. So they need to figure out somehow how much they want or rather NEED to spend to make content, get views and make money from selling us stuff
To be honest, I appreciate the discussion very much, but the reality of being a pro reviewer vs a consumer still makes the numbers seem completely different. lol I’d want to see everyone’s profit margin &, as someone in PR, I’d advise no one to release their profit margin unless they have to. As much as the waste bothers me, intellectually I understand that reviewing is a wasteful job and a competitive one where you have to put in usually years of free labor to succeed, which wildly changes the economics. I guess my point is that the info I really want is none of my business lol & professional me would not advise sharing that! But I’m sooooo curious….
You are awesome! I am doing no buy this year. Need to use what I have before it expires. Each night I have been shopping my stash for complete make up for the next day. If I truly dent like it I am discarding it. Do videos on the things you have all ready purchased that we haven't seen. I watch every video no matter what content you present! Happy 2025!
This is inspiring me to add up what i spent for myself last year in beauty products. I think your plan for this year is great, i want to be more intentional about products i choose and really enjoy the ones i already have. Some of my everyday use products now are from your recommendations, thanks for your hard work!
I’m in the same situation as you. My husband is doing our bookkeeping and when he pointed out how much I spent on makeup I couldn’t believe it! I’m definitely cutting back on my spending this year. I’m drowning in makeup so I want to start using up what I already have.
I have created a makeup want list divided into store categories (Sephora, Ulta, CVS, Target, Amazon, etc.). When I see something that I possibly may want, it goes onto my list. I let the items sit on the list for a while. When I return to my list 9/10 times, I decide I don’t need it and remove it from my list. I spent a lot less in 2024. Now, don't get me wrong, I love my makeup! I'm just trying to be more responsible in my spending. ❤❤❤
I have a lot of appreciation for this topic, because my spending has gotten out of control as well. I'm not a content creator, but I have more makeup than I could feasibly ever wear. I'm thinking this is the year to do an extreme low/no buy, and I want to really examine what's behind my urge to buy. I love your channel, and I love how forthright you are on this topic.
Thank you for this because the consumption is out of hand even if the product is “good”. Part of being an influencer is being a de-influencer too. Not to bash products but to be responsible while indulging. This was very mature and timely.
I like this new direction! I have had to back away from your channel because I don't buy much makeup, I stick to what works for me. I am interested in new techniques and learning about new technologies and innovations in the space.
I love "you don't need these " videos! Yes, reviews are great, but when we're bombarded with the wonderfulness of every new thing it's nice to be reminded that we probably already have something nearly the same. To be reminded to rummage through our collection for something similar. That can be fun too 😊. Such a brave video Jen!
I always appreciate how honest you are. I enjoy watching your channel because its different than the other influencers, you actually spent money on the items you reviewed and was always truthful with your results and opinions.
I love that you're talking about this! I started 2024 on a no-buy and then in the latter half of the year, I went completely nuts. I was so out of control! I love your goal to "shop with purpose" and I really want to do more of that in 2025.
I applaud what you're doing. I have put myself on a no buy for 2025. I can buy one mascara in the summer but other than that I cannot purchase anything until the sales next fall/holiday season. I have too much as someone retired who doesn't go out much. If I can start enjoying what I have and get back into my makeup I can reevaluate next fall.
Yes! Show the new releases to keep us up to date, then walk through your thoughts on the products and if you feel like you should purchase or not. Those are my favorites ❤ im so excited for this
Thank you Jen! I love watching your videos because you are honest and down to earth. You also never try to persuade viewers to buy products. This episode is inspiring because it makes me want to look at where I over indulge! This is an issue that I think many of us experience in different areas. Happy New Year!!!
Proud of you, great video ❤ spending more on family trips/memories especially resonated. I’m also on a low buy this year. Here’s to healthy habits in 2025 cheers 🥂
I started watching beauty you tube in 2021. I started my own channel over a year ago. I only have 120 subscribers because it’s a hobby and I’m not consistent. I have a career. But the amount of products I have purchased to have a nice collection “ for my channel” is astounding! I realized that I have become dependent on that dopamine hit. I’ve put myself on a make-up diet in 2025. 😅. Thank you for blazing a trail for all of us.😊
Love this idea! Going low to no buy for 2025 too! The idea to have your son use currently owned items to make your advent calendar is one of my favorite things you did for 2024! ❤
I love your honesty and self reflection. Thank you for keeping your integrity as your channel grows. I have lost some interest in beauty content and influencers in general, but I still watch each and every video you come out with.😊
2:46 I appreciate that you are explaining this is your job and a business expense. With that said, it’s still a ridiculous amount of money to spend! ❤ new sub Thank you for being transparent, you’re helping soooo many people - including me ❤️😘🇨🇦
I'm on a no buy this year for makeup and skincare. I'm glad you have reflected on how to do this work better. I'm excited for the direction your channel is going and appreciate your reviews!
Me too!!! I'm also challenging myself to use 2 of my pallets 25 times. That's a lot considering I work from home. I also have 25 products I'm trying to use up in 2025. Just ideas in case you're interested in something like that.

*REGARDING TAXES- PLEASE READ*
I've been getting some questions about taxes...yes I do write off the things I purchase at the end of the year and this includes not only beauty products that are used in content creation, but also the room in our home that I film in can be written off, plus any equipment such as cameras, lighting, software.
@@JenPhelps Uuuggggghhhhhh just gotta LOVE taxes 🙄🙄🙄
@@TeaTinted in the past the penalties for not paying quarterly have been small, but every year that I make more money they're starting to get to a point where I don't want to have to pay them so this year I do plan to start paying quarterly for the first time. And without saying how much our family income is...yes it is negligible in the grand scheme of things. Lowering our income by $12k does almost nothing.

Dear Jen,
Life is so very complicated, isn't it!
Sincerely,

I realized recently that I buy makeup like a beauty channel and meanwhile I work remote! It’s ridiculous and I put myself on a strict budget for 2025. Love that you are doing it too!
Same!
I do the same. I need to stop buying so much...I also need to stop buying from Temu
@@robinschimka1947me too!
Very commendable Jen finally a influencer in touch with reality
I know, I really like it and have a whole new respect for her.
Ain’t that the truth! Her and Emilynoel
Eyeshadow-related video ideas: when a new high-end palette comes out, show us similar looks that could be done with existing palettes and don’t buy the new one. And when you do decide to buy a new one, show us several looks you can do with it in multiple videos.
❤
Absolutely yes! I love dupe the vibes kind of videos
I need this!!❤❤❤
💯💯
Great idea.
That would actually make a good video - shop your stash to recreate a new palette.
Ohhhh great idea. Do you remember who it was?

This is so, so smart!
Hello Kelly - please be sure to treat yourself with the same consideration you obviously bestow on others. Have a wonderful 2025!
I pray 🙏🏻 the same my dear 🙏🏻 if a refill is needed I use cvs , Walmart coupons at times I pay 0$ watch your coupons or Walmarts dupe brands can’t beat there prices on anything !
Same. Scary times.
great goals! I'll make them mine too, thank you kelly and happy new year 💮🎉🎊
The more we spend the more unhappy we become , u buy things and there is constant pressure you have to use them, I hate that feeling
No judgement here, because I need to control my own (bad) habits too ❤
Thanks for the viewing recommendation! I do think it's helpful to see other factors and perspectives on consumer habits.
I just downloaded that and my next day off, which will be Wednesday. I have to watch this. Thank you.
I watched that, brilliant documentary 👍❤️
Agree 💯
Self accountability would be helpful
I’m so with you!!!
@@AnastaciaBurns Yes, love this!
I love the Wet n Wild tinted moisturizer, too! Very rarely gets mentioned on UA-cam.

Oh, that's my plan for this year too. Let's see how we do!😊💪🏻
I found out I’m being laid off in a week, so I’m definitely doing a no-buy.
I'm so sorry to hear about your job! ❤️
Great mindset, and I hope you find another good opportunity soon. ❤
Would love to see a few more no buy months where you then bring out something you love that you already have. Thank you Jen these more thoughtful videos that give us time to rethink priorities are wonderful.

I soooo feel you!
Definitely understand post partum buying
Honestly you make me feel so seen 💗 Postpartum was when some loose shopping habits started becoming an unhealthy coping mechanism for me - and then Covid soon after was like pouring gasoline on the fire. Good for you for recognizing it and deciding to make a change. Don’t be too hard on yourself, and remember every new day really is a new opportunity to do better. I hope you find a fountain of true joy to fill you, and please get mental health care if you need it 😘
What helps me is when I see something I want I put it on a wishlist. When I run out of say a foundation I go to my list and pick one. This allows me to try new things but make sure I finish what I have
I love your honesty and ethics. A real breath of fresh air in this world of greed and corruption.
I love where your channel is going for 2025. I myself am making changes on my spending.😊

Once the excitement/hype dies down, you realize you didn't really want it that badly.
me too!
Great comment and excellent idea! Have a great New Year Monica!👍🏻🙏🏻🎊🎉
I do this! Online window shopping. It helps slow my roll.
❤me too❤🥂💃Happy New Year 🥂🥂

Don’t care how good the sale is, if I already have it plus a backup, I don’t buy it. Everything has a shelf life.
I look for sales on EVERYTHING.

Excess products = cluttered drawers/cupboards = cluttered mind/anxiety/stress. Being on a no-buy is liberating.
Jen, your transparency is so admirable ❤️

My husband is suggesting we start a "use cash only" approach too. I haven't agreed yet.
Holy Sh**. Good for you for keeping yourself accountable and keeping track of the makeup purchases. You inspire me!
x2
Late night shopping is what does me in!!!
This is so timely and steeped in integrity. Money is tight, and many people are spending more than they make. It’s wonderful to see someone reminding us to be sensible with our money ❤
I truly appreciate when you compare a new release to something already in your collection. This really helps me decide if it’s worth the money.
🥰❤️ Thank you Lena!
You are starting off the year looking beautiful! Thanks for your honesty, perspective, and candor. Best wishes in 2025! 💕
Thank you Jen for being transparent and real about all this buying and unnecessary consumption of goods.
I've said it before, Jen is such a smart, thoughtful, creator! Love this whole concept. I'm here for it.
💯!❤
It’s a real slippery slope.
thank you for being an "influencer" who is still in touch with reality!!
I dont have the financial freedom to just buybuybuy but I do have the bad habit of not fully using what I have and even harder to get rid of things I might not use (make up especially), but I do get jealous/FOMO when I see other people showing and promoting 'the next best thing'. I am in the process of unsubbing from certain influencers who are.... way out of touch with reality
Though the thing I dont like about makeup is that we need to buy and use them for a while to try if it will work out for us, and if it doesnt then we'd feel more inclined to buy something else without finishing the old one!
Bravo to you Jen! Being a good steward of our money is wisdom!!!
I have only been buying replacement the past 2years, nothing new, and I gotta tell you, it feels GREAT!
i love that u r not sponsored and r honest
I am considering closing my account at Amazon. I’m very guilty of spending too much on that app.
@heathersmith797 i want to know how much Lauren Mae beauty spends. She buys expensive advent calendars!
They earn more money after they post a video. And anything you buy to increase?Your income is a tax write off
Jen, dont regret it. We love your reviews.
Behind your urge to buy might be anxiety or boredom
Thank you for this because the consumption is out of hand even if the product is “good”. Part of being an influencer is being a de-influencer too. Not to bash products but to be responsible while indulging. This was very mature and timely.
This is sooooo refreshingly transparent, accountable, honest, and real. Much appreciated
I have a very small makeup budget, so I love “shop my stash” videos.
I like this new direction! I have had to back away from your channel because I don't buy much makeup, I stick to what works for me. I am interested in new techniques and learning about new technologies and innovations in the space.
thanks for your honesty Jen and trying to think of it better, 🇨🇦
I love "you don't need these " videos! Yes, reviews are great, but when we're bombarded with the wonderfulness of every new thing it's nice to be reminded that we probably already have something nearly the same. To be reminded to rummage through our collection for something similar. That can be fun too 😊. Such a brave video Jen!
Thanks for the transparency and also for the challenge!
Thank you Jen for such honesty. This is why you have so much credibility, integrity, respect and love from your viewers. ❤
😅. Thank you for blazing a trail for all of us.😊
Subscribed!❤😊
@@no_number_at_end_of_nameI'm doing a tarot deck based project pan that I started back in August and I have a handful of focus products this year for sure. I realized my makeup buying the last couple years was excessive
