    Can you get the yellow colour out of old book Pages?

    • @SaveYourBooks
      @SaveYourBooks  Рік тому +2

      Not simply. The yellowing is caused by the acidic content degrading the fibers. You would have to de-acidify the paper, which requires disbinding the book to wash the pages... then you have to re-adjust the ph after you have used light bleaching techniques but none of this reverses the damage already done. 😳

    • @SaveYourBooks
      @SaveYourBooks  2 роки тому +1

      Covers are covered with a wide variety of materials. There are some chemical "cleaners" out there but I cannot recommend them because they tend to do more damage by moving the color around and making smears.

    I've always been fascinated by the bookbinding craft. Now I have some maths books to repair I've decided to get some bookbinder's tools and start doing simple jobs. My first will be a cheaply-made paperback that is "perfect" bound and is now falling to bits at the spine. To buy the book again, costs as much as buying the bits and pieces to make the clamp. So I opted to make the clamp. A new book will inevitably to the same as this one.

  • @Hmoody1811
    @Hmoody1811 4 роки тому +4

    So can I clarify, first preference for all bookbinding adhesives is paste, PVA is second option? What instance would you rather use PVA than paste?

    • @SaveYourBooks
      @SaveYourBooks  4 роки тому +3

      I wish it were that easy! It is situational. I wrote up a sort of hierarchy in this free foundations course: saveyourbooks.com/course/1-book-repair-foundations-101-the-save-your-books-cleaning-repair-hierarchy-guidelines/ . Basically, you have to consider the qualities of the paste and the qualities of the materials you are working with. Do you have an instance where you are covering original materials? Use paste if you can, but paste is wet, so on a leather book you may need to use the drier PVA to avoid creating a stain. I hope that helps.

    I was searching through the videos and maybe i missed it. What is the best way to keep a dust jacket intact. I have a book that has a dust jacket that is torn in half. I don't want to fix it or alter it too much but I don't want to risk it getting torn anymore. Can I use something like Fantasyon White Art Tape Masking Artists Tape to tape the page temporarily. Is that removable at a later point in time?

    • @SaveYourBooks
      @SaveYourBooks  Рік тому

      Tape should be avoided for several reasons. Japanese tissue and Nori paste are a good alternative. To learn more check out this course: saveyourbooks.com/course/3-400-repair-dust-jacket/ or this one which is free: saveyourbooks.com/course/6-100protect-a-dust-jacket-with-a-cover-free/

    I have a graphic novel like book, the covers are slightly hard. But some of the pages on the left and right side are both bent while looking sorta curved.
    It just looks like something twisted it.
    I don't know if its the force I to put it in the box it came in or maybe one of my kittens stepped on it?
    Anyways I was hoping if anyone has any type of solution for me so I can fix my box, I'm honestly upset at this moment because of the the messed up pages.
    Lastly have a good day/night :)

    Hi. I have recovered two old Bibles by using your videos. They are great. Now my son gave me a perfect bound Bible that his toddler ripped out numerous pages. The pages are incomplete on the binding side. They have torn away edges on some. What is the best way to attach them back into the Bible. Do I add paper edges or just trim the pages to straighten and leave narrower pages in the Bible or what. Not sure how to proceed. There are approximately 25 pages from two sections of the Bible. Would appreciate any ideas. Lynn

    • @SaveYourBooks
      @SaveYourBooks  2 роки тому

      The issue will be avoiding adding so much new material that it won't close properly. This might be a case for some archival document repair tape which could help extend the torn pages if taped on both sides. Or just tip the pages back in using PVA or a combination. Hard to say without seeing it. Best of luck!

    • @SaveYourBooks
      @SaveYourBooks  3 роки тому +1

      This is a kind of Kozo tissue / paper. This one might be Moriki or Yatsuo. You can buy such paper at www.washiarts.com/ or www.talasonline.com/. Basically, it is great because of the long fibers that are harder to break. The weight is about 45 gsm. Thinner colored tissue could be used over a stronger plain paper. The colors tend to shift per batch so you know.
