Because he got blacklisted after Citizen Kane, Orson Welles had to do a lot of commercials to pay the bills. I was a massive Transformers fan as a kid and when the movie came out I was really only upset about Optimus Prime's death. Even though i wasn't a fan of Rodimus I really liked the post movie cartoon better because it was more of a Sci-Fi show which i loved. I was so stoked for the Return of Optimus Prime and so crushed that it just ended there. That's what made me disinterested in Transformers the conclusion of the G1 cartoon here in the US.
That's totally understandable. But you missed out on by far the best season of G1. The writing was darker and more mature, more creative and sci-fi, had more character depth (mainly in the form of how Rodimus was conflicted about being the leader because he felt he couldn't live up to OP the OG), and of course...the return of Optimus Prime! Twice! He got to come back and nobly sacrifice himself for the Autobots AGAIN in "Dark Awakening," then come back for real in the two parter that closed off the season. Me around 14 at the time and a little too old for Transfomers, saw season 3 first, and believe me if you see season 3 of G1 first, seasons 1 and 2 are nearly unwatchable. They are an enormous downgrade, written for slightly younger kids, set on present-day Earth instead of in space, with every episode being the same "Megatron comes up with a way to steal energy and the Autobots stop him" formula over and over. Watching seasons 1 and 2 after having seen season 3 is like watching the prequels after having grown up on the original Star Wars films. Which I also experienced, lol.

Did they not know that you can release MORE THAN ONE VERSION of a character? They were trying to replicate Kenner's success with the Star Wars toys, which DIDN'T involve killing their main characters. They just released new versions of the characters to match their look in the latest films. And one of the 86 toys they released WAS AN UPGRADED OPTIMUS PRIME, but they chose to release him as a different character instead! Baffling. They'd barely have to change the story...have Optimus mortally wounded in the fight with Megatron, maybe APPEAR to die, while letting the audience know his spark is safe inside the Matrix, and have someone rebuild him bigger and better in the third act as the Ultra Magnus toy, but still CALLED Optimus.
