  • In this short video I explain why you might tint your lacquer when using it to seal premium chalk paint, and then demonstrate how to tint your lacquer.
Lacquer is used as a sealer for premium chalk paint on surfaces that need to be hard-wearing, may get wiped down or wet, for example: floors, table tops, bathroom or outdoor furniture.
We like to tint lacquer when it’s being used over dark colours or whites, this keeps the colour strong and stops any milkiness or over brushing from showing.
You don’t need to use much premium chalk paint to tint your lacquer, we don’t measure but approximately use one teaspoon of premium chalk paint to one cup of lacquer.
Brush two coats as normal. Wash your brush with warm water and gentle soap, we like to use French olive soap.
Happy painting and if you have any questions, please leave a comment 🙂

Are you using water based products here? Here in the states "lacquer" is thinned with only lacquer thinner.

Hi Bill, yes it's a water based lacquer that we use :) it's probably New Zealand terminology but I'm sure you could do similar with any water based clear coat sealer. Hope that helps

Thanks, that's what I thought. We would call that water based polyurethane over here.
