      D in DC Worked for a Bay Area man whose car collection of over four hundred vehicles includes a gullwing Mercedes as well as two -- count 'em, TWO! -- Duesenberg dual-cowl phaetons (looking at you, Charlie G!) And much to his credit, he often drove cars from the collection. Other than to preserve and protect your investment, why collect cars and simply store them in a garage somewhere? Selfish, abominable behavior, imho.

    Jay does the best overviews of the old bikes. The durability of the 5 main bearing Henderson speaks volumes about quality. The Indian 4 didn't get 5 main bearings until years later. It's cool that Jay owned many of his old bikes before the Tonight Show
    when these machines were attainable, and not too outrageously priced. He's a true afficianado. Thanks, Jay!

    Just a note about how Arnold, Schwinn & Company was a bicycle business and expanded to Motor cycles in 1912 ( Excelsior ) and Henderson (1917) which was hit hard by the 1929 marker crash so in 1931 it when bankrupt from a lack of buyers and then stuck to bicycles. . Schwinn had a 1941 Deluxe DX Tank Cruiser in DX blue pre-war . Big changes in 1955 , but JFK's 50% tarrif on imports in 62 didn't do very much and in 64 when it was lifted the British and German bikes poured in and by the 90's it went under and closed in 1992 .

    My Dad, b.1912, owned a Henderson,
    said the torque from the inline 4 would pull you back up from a hard (left? right?) lean, (and you could use that when outrunning the cops) he got a ticket in 1932 for blowing by the Verona courthouse 80 mph. The cop used that red needle indicator speed on the ticket from how fast he had to go to catch my Dad.

    I built a 40 Indian and a 31 Henderson four when I was in high school about 1949. The interesting things I found about them were the external band rear brakes, and Bosch magnetos. Also the carb had a round float made of cork that looked like a doughnut. To seal it from absorbing gasoline you would paint it in orange shellac and bake it in the oven, much to the shagrin of mom. I thought for sure you would mention that beautiful cast aluminum gas tank on the Henderson. Thks for those GREAT SOUNDS.

It reminded me of a vintage aircraft that the airforce or navy might have used in that it was all function and no glitz, what a delight indeed. Thank you Jay for bringing this sort of vehicle to the fore front so we can learn not only about the vehicles history but of the place in history this vehicle played in the world. Lastly......I dont think i have ever heard a more beautiful sounding bike, just a pure gutteral sound that speaks of her power and magnificence.

    What a fabulous bike. 90 -/+ years old and can keep up with pretty much anything on the road today! 👍 Also great job on mentioning your use of Marvel's Mystery Oil (aka M.M.O.) to counteract the effects of alcohol in modern gasoline. MMO also functions nicely as a fuel stabilizer, fuel pump and injector lubricant, amongst other beneficial virtues. I've been using for years and can honestly say it's one of the few vehicle additives that isn't "snake-oil". I guess that's why it's been around since the early 1920's!! Heck... it's even cheap!! Great video as always, Jay! Thanks for sharing. 👍
    Oh and for the record.... I'm NOT (nor was ever) connected with M.M.O. in anyway, shape, or form other than a true fan. 😉

    • @IgnatSolovey
      @IgnatSolovey 6 років тому +1

      Is there any public road in the USA where you are actually allowed by law to go faster than 85 mph? Doubt that. Even Germans imposed a 130 kph (81 mph) speed limit on many of their autobahn stretches, although there is no universal nationwide speed limit there and there are places where you can speed up to 150 mph or even more if you can keep your car in control reliably. Elsewhere in Europe general freeway top speed limit is 81 mph, often less. It is safe to say that you pretty much don't need a vehicle that goes faster than 80 mph (unless it's an ambulance, fire, police or closed-circuit race car) - no point to pay for 160 mph top speed if you mostly can't drive half fast as that without getting a speeding ticket on a good road or ruining a suspension on potholes and bumps elsewhere.
      I have an experience of riding (as a passenger) a vehicle that can't go faster than 80 kilometers per hour (50 mph) by design, it was in 2017, 450 kilometers be ween Samara and Ufa and then back couple of days later (Russia, M5 federal road), a rusty 1984 Mercedes 609D van. That thing doesn't even lock properly: there's nothing to take inside, nothing to vandalize and it has not quite evident engine start procedure with an aftermarket electric APU for its diesel. I'd say it was a pleasant journey: 9 hours at a leisurely pace (50 kph/31mph average) in a weather as nice as you can get (+26°C with breeze and intermittent cumulus clouds) enjoying scenery and absolutely no attention from anyone, police or not. And, well, we were on time everywhere we had to be.

    4:00 there is a flaw in the police use of the red needle. The officer chancing you could accelerate to a higher top speed then decelerate as he got close to you. Definitely a flaw in the physics of speed there.

    • @MichaelSmith-js5wq
      @MichaelSmith-js5wq 4 роки тому

      I get what your saying and if that is the way it was done, you'd be right (although back then I doubt you'd get into much of an argument with one of those officers, it might get you hurt). However, suppose the officer accelerated to catchup with you, and then matched your speed and hit the reset button just before he pulled you over. That would give him a fairly accurate indication as to your speed before being stopped. It would be admittedly difficult and probably impractical, but doable none the less.

    I don't know much about contracts, but I would think TV personalities would have contracts that say you can't do anything (the TV execs perceive) dangerous, like ride a motorcycle. I'm sure pro athletes contracts say they can't do things like play other sports outside of their profession. i.e. get injured playing vollyball, and you miss some games in your profession.

    I am just shocked at how good this motorcycle is. I had no idea that the bikes in 1933 had better gear ratios and a more practical engine than today's bikes. Almost none of today's bikes have good gear ratios. Many bikes still vibrate enough to shake the mirrors and rattle the frame. Big V-Twin engines are not good for idling a 8mph in traffic, they don't like being lugged at an idle. But this Henderson is a tractor motor that is glass smooth, a perfect combination.

    What if the cop was going the other way and turned around and you were a 1/2 a mile ahead of him and he ran up to 100mph to catch you but you were only going 50 mph? His speedometer would have shown 100 when you were only going 50. That speedometer seems like a speed trap gimmick to me.

    Jay,you're the 1st person Ive heard that also had a valve gum up in such short time as I have.I chased a 49 chev.for 40 years before the guy would sell it to me.It had been his college project,He installed a 327 4spd, open driveshaft,but put it up in 75?to raise family .He ran it every year,only to the vet test center!I got it,started it on stale orange stinky gas and ran it for about 30 minutes while we finalized the deal.Next night after work I came back with a pipe and chain I'd made up for towing/braking.I proceeded to get it out on the street and hook it up to my pickup and when it started,not only could I hear an 'easy'cylinder,but a piston tapping an open valve.Turned out,the tank was unsalvageable.NEVER TOO OLD TO LEARN! Haha!(john wade motorized,you tube).

    My grandfather drove a motorcycle as a courier in the German Army in WW2... I watch old videos of them going across Russia that went on forever and ever and watch the soldiers on motorbikes. I've got an 85 Rebel I found rusting away and took completely apart and restored, and its a blast. I use it like a mule and haul more on it than when I'm in a car, usually groceries. I'ld love to score an old built like a tractor hardtail, bring it back to life, and use it as my daily driver.

    Love these videos, Jay is really knowledgable and explains his vehicles wonderfully well. This series is better than most of the car shows on TV, Jay doesn't have to contend with commercial breaks or the practice of re-showing the last 2 minutes of the show before you went to break. It's more in depth and interesting. Thanks Jay.

    I love the Longitudinal 4! Mr. Leno - yet another great machine in excellent shape being exposed for the LA public.
    Do you have a Velocette LE with a stick shift? The one with the weird flexi alloy chassis that uses the engine to brace it? That is one weird bike - but fun! A buddy of mine restored one not that long ago.

    What a wonderful bike, ahead of its time in some ways. It would, indeed, be interesting to imagine what a ... 1954 Henderson would look like! ;) I'd love to be able to bring out a new version of that engine, always loved the in-line fours; this one, the Nimbus (from Denmark) and of course the old Ace/Indian. I still think it's a niche market that remains unfilled. So it'd cost a few million, WTF, it's a tax write-off, right?

    My Surname Motorcycle 'HENDERSON'.. She's a Beautiful piece of machinery. I've wanted one of these since I was 14yrs old after finding out about these and others that I didn't know anything about.. I was raised on Honda's and Kawasaki's, Triumph's etc.. as that is what my father was working on or riding.. I've since found out that my Family is a distant member of the Original Family that made these and also in my Families ancestry I have the surname of 'Cleveland' which also was a Family I came from. Thanks Jay for sharing this with us as these are what made this country Great back before Mass production producing took over or the Imports starting being brought here to AMERICA. Man I wish I had a ...or a CROCKER and a few of those also. Way out of my price range now that I'm older and these are more Valuable in today's America. God Bless America.

    And in 1931, I suspect it was common knowledge that if you go sailing past a skilled and experienced “mounted “ policeman whose iron steed happened one of these purpose-built vehicles, thinking yourself invulnerable in your mighty 1929 Model A Ford … rest assured, if he pulled out with the intent to catch you, you were already caught.

    A 'Non-production' bike, also American, that pops to mind is Curtiss. While Glenn Curtiss is famously known for his airplanes, (particularly his seaplanes, although the T-18 Triplane is very notable) his motorbikes were insane for any timeframe, let alone the early 20Th century! V-8 power, and world-record speeds! I hope Jay can secure one for a video segment, though I doubt he'd be likely to be allowed to ride it. Very rare bikes, but, OMG, Fast!

    Jay, my Great Grandfather Morris Wolf, while riding that bike in the 30's, hit a bump and his wife (Grandma Wolf), who was very pregnant, bounced off the back. She was rushed to the Hospital and gave birth to my Aunt Norma. My Grandma was ok. Too bad he didn't keep the bike, I'd have it:)

    If this is truly original it is a 30, not a 31. The 31 (last year) was the first and only year of a pancake horn and the John Brown headlight. It is believed that Ballack, who created the only surviving list of year to serial numbers either rounded it off or created it from memory.
