This is compressed air. Cartridge starts are used on occasion (say if no air is available) but stocks are unfortunately low. I'm yet to see one of those starts myself!
@@ZacYates thanks. I only just learned (or relearned as maybe I knew but forgot) about art ridge starts after going down UA-cam rabbit hole that started with the SR71 startup, somewhere eventually getting me to one that was hand cranked in a dudes backyard and then to this (I already subscribe to your channel). This was a good one to end up on in that journey considering I’m a Kiwi and have a flown in and out of Wanganui a few times many decades ago.
this is an ex swiss ariforce DH-112 Venom. I saw a lot of those nice jetfighter strat and landing on the airforcebase of Dübendorf.
Does he time the shutdown and how long it takes for it to stop turning? Would love to hear John talk about it one day.
He doesn't time it every time, I just happen to have been around when he does! And unfortunately I don't remember. Next time I will!
Rundown is 90sec, I checked yesterday!
So this looks like the cartridge start has been swapped out for a high pressure gas bottle? Is it nitrogen?

@@MeppyMan I still can't believe little old Wanganui has the world's only flying Venom. I have to remind myself of this every time I see her!
Whanganui airport looks like it needs a bigger apron
@@ianallen1948 they're working on it, I believe!
I wonder how much a full tank costs? 🤔
I'm not sure, but one day when I helped refuel we put in more than 670 litres...!
