16 inch is much better i think, 14 is great for some portability aspects, especially in very tight spaces.
But most places, going to class on the table, at a coffee shop or at home the 16 inch is still portable and has the HUGE benefit of the screen realestate! its much better to have say two programs side by side to play with, better to read text, it also helps with heat displacement as its larger.
Let’s be real here, most people that have the 14inch in reality use an external display at home whenever possible.
The 16 inch gives you enough screen to use it as is exclusively 90% of the time. Most people i know or even see on UA-cam with 14s, have them plugged in most of the time to a larger display.
I just think 16 fits most people, don’t let the little bit larger body fool you. You’ll love it and wont have regrets thinking i wish i had more screen to see something better, especially two programs at once or if you have taken it on a trip and have no possibility of another monitor.
The 14 is still great don’t get me wrong and has its place too. It’s a little bit cheaper for starters, can be good for someone that wants to work on public transport or a plane seat.
P.s my last computer was a 14 inch and overall it was great and still usable! The thing is, text and two programs really can be at times hard to read and if reading and writing a lot, eye strain is real! You can zoom in, but then you get less and less on the screen.
16inch is a nice size, trust me yes it is larger, but Apple did well keeping it pretty thin and light.

I think portability is the question and personal preference. The cost difference goes a long way to a nice monitor. My opinion is the 16” is really for the max chip to make sure you get everything you are paying for performance wise. Otherwise save money, stick with a laptop that’s actually portable and use a monitor when needed.

If your goal is to compare chips you should use same chassis (aka. 14 inch binned vs 14 inch unbinned, avoiding chassis pro/cons). If the goal is to compare chassis you should be using 14 unbinned vs 16 inch unbinned.
Variables need to be isolated in order to obtain valuable results.

I think with the better cooling system with less fan noise, better music production performance, bigger display and trackpad, it is a more premium experience. And the case that it is justified by paying $500 more, is a matter of pocket size, not productivity. But I have to say this, better cooling performance WILL BE a deciding factor in the lifespan of this machine, 90 degrees is a lot cooler than 104 degrees.

You just proved why I chose the 14". :) In the "old days" of Intel, it was 15" or nothing, because the 13" was always underpowered, especially in graphics. But as these numbers show, with Apple Silicon the 14" is practically the performance equal to the 16", with very few exceptions. I was therefore able to step down to 14" without any significant compromise.
I would only get the 16" if I wanted maximum battery life and required the Max processor, after seeing that the 14" can throttle the Max. But I only need the Pro, so the 14" is a brilliant package for my needs, and I am now able to use much smaller bags than I ever could with the old 15" MacBook Pro.

The 16in model honestly appeals way more to me for two big reasons:
-1. The most used part of any laptop is the screen and those extra two inches really go a long way in being able to get a solid workflow going and just overall enjoyment of the laptop.
-2. Fan noise. Based on that last test, it seems like the fan noise under a heavy workload could be twice as loud on the 14 vs the 16. That and having overall more thermal headroom.
When looking at the whole package, for me it just makes more sense to get the 16 over that 14. For people who will say the 16 is not as portable, for one they have never lugged around a high performance windows laptop lol. But, if that extra 1.3lbs really is the make or break, I gotta imagine the 13in Air is way more attractive as it really not that much smaller than the 14 when side by side and at 2.75lbs it two pounds lighter than the 16inch and close to a pound lighter than the 14in. Even the 15in Air is slightly lighter than the 14in pro and the screen size jump feels much larger than you would think for just an inch. Just feels like win win on the 16, especially with all the sales right now.

16 inches model is really not that portable. I have to constantly fly, and the problem is not even the weight but the sheer size of it. It's just more convenient to have something tiny to work with, not to hit other people around and not to feel awkward. 14 in model is perfect

    • @PersonSuit
      @PersonSuit 10 місяців тому +2

@@KVzism To each their own and if you like the 14 better then thats all that matters. For me I would personally disagree. Having carried large windows gaming grade laptops for years just to get the performance that Intel MacBooks could not provide, I would be lugging around anywhere between close to 6Lbs for a 15inch or over 9lbs for a 17inch laptop. That did not even include the charger which would be another 2lbs. Going from carrying 8 to 11Lbs of laptop on the regular to a laptop thats under 5 pounds that I don't even always have to take the charger for is beyond portable in comparison. Having said that, I am not sure why a 16inch would be so large you feel awkward with it. It is a bit heavier for sure, but unless you are constantly on the go and walking is your made mode of transportation (i.e. no car/bike), then I am not sure the extra 1.2Lbs of the 16inch outweighs the benefits of the over all better package. But thats just my point of view on it.

Mainly interested in heavy photo work and some light video, and know that I’ll be getting at least 36g ram… just not sure if the binned max is worth it with the thermal throttleling you previously showed on the 14in (and no, no 16in for me. I upgraded from my base model m1 14” to the m2 max 14” for this reason. I work with two R5 bodies with raw files only. The base m1 was not fast enough for me. I found that if you edit a large set of images (300+) it would get really hot and throttle and the 32Gb of Ram in the m2 max would fill up real fast if you use tools like, crop, lens correction, detail etc. the editing would gradually get choppier and smoothness would disappear around half way into it. That really irked me a lot. Because performance wise it was about the same as the base m1 with 16gb. The battery will drain faster too. The m1 never got hot on me and the battery consumption was really better. I exchanged the m2 max after two months and got the 64Gb. It will still get hot and the battery drain is the same but at least it has smooth sailing throughout the edits. If you care about export times the m2 max is really fast but I don’t care about export speeds really.

Been waiting for you to make this comparison. Actually, my question mark was the difference in performance not between the binned and unbinned Pro chip per se, but rather between the same Pro chip in a 14" chassis vs the 16", which I guess was also answered by this vid seeing that there's basically not much difference between the two. Currently with a late 2013 15" MBP DG and was thinking of considering the 14" because of its compact size. But I think I'll go with the 16" still, because of everything that's related with the 16" chassis like the larger screen, the better speakers, and especially that upgraded Pro chip's performance in Logic, which was one of the few improvements in the 16" that would benefit me. Probably will upgrade the RAM as well for the large sound libraries I work. Great video as usual, guys! Keep it up!

I got the m3 max 16inch 16/40/ 48 and so far I'm loving it alot. I'm coming from the mid 15 macbook pro so it definitely feels much faster and music sounds better over the speakers. Overall, weight doesn't even feel noticed since I go the gym daily and the laptop just feels very light to me. I also chose 16in because my hands feel more comfortable typing while the 14in I felt my hand felt too bunched together on the keyboard. Battery life feels great as well as the fast recharge time. Overall, I'd say if you have m1 series probably don't need to upgrade. But anything before m1 I'd say go for it as it feels more responsive and fast. Also, if memory bandwith matters to you pay attention to apple's tech specifications the model I chose has 400gb/s)

I speculate that the reason the M3 Pro has six performance cores is because Apple wants this chip in the next iPad Pros. That would differentiate them from the iPad Air. Having less performance and more efficiency cores would help that device with battery life without making them thicker to contain a larger battery.

Knowing Apple the new design might come in 2025/2026. Maybe future redesign finally brings Face ID. Overall MacBooks need more storage in base models. I find 512gb of storage is not enough. 1 tb in base model should be a standard especially when you’re buying a „pro” machine. Big change should come to chip itself. I don’t like that we have to pay so much more (nearly cost of second MacBook) to get extra gpu cores. It would be better if both Pro and Max models come with the same amount of gpu cores but the difference would be in CPU cores where the Max model would take the lead.

I was so torn between these 14 & 16. And then I’ve just took a decision based on logic. , The “portability” issue is non existent, however, for the people undecided, think about it! If you want your work portable, is it better on a larger screen or smaller? Because if I would carry it after me, it would be in my car or my backpack and trust me, I would want the bigger display, speakers and battery life, then it’s truly portable. If you see people saying, “but the 14 is….” They basically are saying that 2 extra inches makes it so big that they can’t place it in their backpack or too heavy to lift it up (basically pussies for complaining about 1 extra pound). The 16 is the way to go if you buy a laptop to travel and actually work on it.
And another thing, they will say, but when they’re home they can just connect their 14 to a display. At home I have a mac mini connected to 2 displays, so why would you buy a laptop to connect it? The point is, when I’m gone from home to have a nice big screen to work on and not at home, that’s why you buy the laptop in the first place, also when you’re not at home, the 16 will benefit you with it’s larger battery and superior cooling. Don’t be fooled by “the weight lol” or 2 extra inches, most backpacks are made for up to 17s.

You’d be surprised how many bags don’t fit the 16 inch MBP. I actually would recommend the opposite which is if you don’t travel much, get the 16. You’d be surprised how much of annoyance using the 16 on a flight, that extra 2 inch all of a sudden mattered.

@@haroldminuskumar lol man, you have money to buy a mac pro but cannot afford a backpack for it? Leave it out. Most normal people drive in their car, so your argument is basically for bold skinny men with glasses that can’t lift an extra pound. Also, on the flight, just use your iphone or ipad if it’s a short flight, why on the planet would you start using your laptop. I usually drink champagne on flights if it’s long haul, why would I edit videos on flights? Beyond me.

Please add a machine learning benchmark using LM Studio because the new M3 models are so powerful that they can run easily a 70(!) BN parameter model which was impossible just 3 years ago. Since ML inference is bound by memory speed and memory size, there are real differences between the base, pro, and Max CPU. Besides no reviewer does ML Benchmarking despite the fact that Ai engineers gradually discover the M3 Max as a highly competitive alternative. A fully spiced out M3 Max can run models that just one year ago would have required a workstation worth at least $16k..,

Alternatively, you could run games at maybe Medium ~800p with a frame cap of 60 (or Vsync, but it would go to 120Hz on non 13" MBPs unless you adjust it down)?
Max chips would also be appreciated to test
Just wondering how good gaming on battery is, wondering if Macbooks can do a better job than handhelds / APU laptops (if you get good battery you could increase the brightness to make it somewhat usable outdoors, certainly with forced HDR brightness, at the cost of battery and a few $100 more)?
