  • Hi! This is a story on the drug issue on Sao Miguel (and we also visited the lost villages of the island and the farmers market in Ponta Delgada)
    We went for a hike on the eastern side of Sao Miguel, Azores, Azores, which is also known as the "Lost village of Sao Miguel". If you are planning to visit the Azores, and looking for some recommendations on hikes, there is a good website, where you can search information on different trails on the Azores: trails.visitazores.com/en
    We are also talking about drugs and the Azores, about what happened in the past and how drugs came to the island. NETFLIX is currently filming a comedy show about the Azores and drugs, recorded respectively. It should come out in 2023.
    One of my favourite places in Ponta Delgada, which is the capital of the Azores, is the farmer's market. For the best experience, try to visit it during Friday/Saturday - there are many sellers!
    Take care,
    Noemi

    What's the point in highlighting a story from twenty years ago about drugs and commenting on the substance abuse situation on the island. You are a guest have some manners, your comments are not helpful and may actually serve to attract the wrong type of people to the Azores.

      I do think that it’s important to read about/know/ understand matters/issues, so they can be avoided in the future. If we take, for example, global issues or international development, it’s important to get educated and know (more or less) what is going on in the world. In general, the more people talk about an issue, the higher the chance that an action will be taken. So for this, I do not agree with you and I do not think that talking about it might “attract the wrong type of people to the Azores”. Thanks for sharing your opinion and wishing you a great day!

    Locals rarely do drugs in the Azores. It's more of the tourists. Locals got better things to do with their time, like cooking, cleaning, dancing, farming, planting and spending time with friends and family.

    • @gordusmaximus4990
      @gordusmaximus4990 2 роки тому +5

      "Locals rarely do drugs in the Azores" in the past maybe, but drug use is actually getting higher. It all started in the early 00s with a Cocaine ship from a Italian drug trafficar that went to the north coast of the Island of São Miguel, alot of people used drugs without knowing what drugs were, its a comical and sad situation at the same time. Alot of people obviously got addicted, there are some stories even of using cocaine to make the lines of football fields.
      Things stabilized, but the damaged was done. Early 2010s young people started to use "Synthetic" drugs and now its actually a huge problem, specially in the biggest island. Crime has raisen like never before. Sure, crime in the Azores is "Nothing" compared to big European cities, but still, for the local peaceful way of Life in the Azores, rocked alot of people world. There is even some talks of creating some regional laws to fight synthetic drug use that is becoming a problem, combine that with a uneployment of youth and you have a terrible combination. Its actually a huge "shock" for older people seeing how things changed in that part of their society.

    • @franciscorodrigues4156
      @franciscorodrigues4156 Рік тому +1

      I don't know the story, I know the reality, and the reality was that it was a difficult moment in our small society, many young people died because yes, there was a vessel carrying that drug and it was caught by the authorities and what it resulted in was what happens is normal in environments with consumption and traffic, social problems and poverty of spirit because lack of money is not because the state gives them subsidy and in many cases pays them home, light and water.
      now tell me the difference between being in são miguel or being on the other side of the world the results are always the same, the only Diference was we are a small society, probably in New York there are more junkies than all 260000 Azoreans and you don t have the same impact if you go talk about them.

It's difficult to pinpoint exactly your intentions behind this video, but I feel like drugs are far from being a problem in the Azores from the other sources that I have read. You're stirring facts and hearsay's to make this sound like a huge problem needing to be addressed at an important scale and it certainly is not that way... I would reconsider keeping this video on UA-cam for the sake of the islands reputation, to respect the locals and the beautiful culture that they have.

My father was from Sao Jorge and I spent my teenage years living there. Drugs were all but nonexistent. But since moving back to the US Portugal has legalized all sorts of drugs users go through therapy dealers go to prison jail etc. I have no idea if they are barred from the island as you state. I just know that some people have in the past been shipped to the Azores from Canada and US for criminal activities and there they sit and grow old
