I work for an old company with a lot of very powerful directors who are often incompetent or bullies. Class extends beyond money. Class is the way you are treated at work, by social services, police etc. It determines your entire life. I've noticed class dictates outcome almost always.

It's not so uncanny when you consider the source for much of these talking points: Rupert Murdoch's propaganda machine. The Daily Wire, The Daily Mail, Fox and GB "news", etc. They all spout the same garbage. It's very coordinated

in 2023 it is super easy to change class. It has never been esier than today. In the 80s and 90s my family was middleclass today we are all lower class and can't afford anything. Class changed. Easy.

The nature of subsidies towards home improvements etc. is that the cost of the installation tends to increase when the money comes on stream and the subsidy is eaten by the industry. When the subsidy ends, the price drops. It’s a subsidy to the industry more than the homeowners.
The key to class is cultural capital. You can talk with a posh accent and be a rich banker but if you go on holiday in benidorm and only drink fosters you still have less cultural capital than someone who holidays in south France and goes to wine tasting or museums
Here in the US class means anyone with a Billion Dollars...I assume it's the same for The UK.

Wish I could have called in for this chat. I listen all the way from South Africa. In terms of this conversation 54:55, I think our social capital is key to our social mobility. I wonder if you think that perhaps the great hope of social media is actually a barrier to social mobility. We can more easily stay connected to the people we grew up with. And we can introduce them to our networks. Perhaps social media means more 'friends' from different backgrounds, but it also means we can leverage our existing social capital more easily. And so new relationships that could enable social mobility are less likely to be nurtured because there is not a necessity.

2 of my second cousins didn't have to work as their farther became a landlord in the 80's. They were able to send their daughters to private schools, I myself have aspirations of sending my children to private schools as i have seen the opportunities it has given them which I never had.

I've often thought that our preoccupation with the class system, is all part of a massive shell game. I think that the old standards of social measurement are largely defunct but while we're all watching the side show, the transfer of wealth is inexorably flowing towards those who own the banks and by extension, the real power in the world today.

The French have exactly the same class system. William the Conquerer liquidated the English upperclass and replaced it by the French upperclass. The French have more aristocracy and landownership than the British. The French are the Old Roman Empire. Nothing ever changed under the surface. They imagine Louis Quatorze still in Versailles.

Can the national electric grid cope if everyone was driving electric cars? 30 million electric cars all charging overnight every night. A 80kwh electric car battery. Even the fastest home charger on a 80amp fuse will take 4 hours at least. That's up to £680 million every night just in electric costs.
@bazzacuda_ Low energy light bulbs were part of it for sure, lights actually use more energy than you might think because of the length of time they are left on for - hours or even days, rather than minutes or hours for other appliances. But the bigger difference is probably the energy efficiencies achieved with other more power-hungry appliances - like fridges and freezers which are left switched on all the time, or vacuum cleaners which used to use 1200 Watt motors but now use half that. Plus the surge over the last 20 to 30 years of people getting double glazing fitted, which makes a massive difference to energy used for heating, some of which is done electrically.

The night time draw on the grid when everyone is charging their cars will surely be much higher at least? So perhaps more power stations running so less time for maintenance?

James, stop it! You are my favorite presenter, but you are making me feel that, despite your achievements, you still suffer from an inferior complex, hence the desire to have people see you as posh by virtue of attending a fee-paying (boarding) school.
If he went to public schools you wouldn't give him a spec of anything so why is it wrong that he steps outside his experience to fight for others that are struggling n ways he didn't have to? Pretty sad there.
He normally brings it up in the context of acknowledgement of his privilege because of positions he holds. Probably because people would argue he is a hypocrite otherwise so it makes sense.
