  • I wanted to surprise a friend of mine who runs an event planning business, Hub of the Hammer, with a sign he could display in his home/office. It was also a good excuse to test out my new Shapeoko 3 CNC and learn something new.
I grabbed their logo and made it into a vector in Illustrator. I then imported it into Carbide Create and cut it out of MDF using a #112 .0625" Flat Cutter End mill.
As you can see in the video I ordered my cut paths wrong and cut the outside of the letters before the inside. I noticed relatively early but was hoping the double sided tape would hold enough to finish the piece. It did not and the letter lifted up and spun with the bit. Somewhat dangerous so it was a good learning experience.
I re-cut the letters above and all was well.
In retrospect the "of the" letters came out too small. It still looks good at a distance but if I were to remake the sign I would make them bigger.
Sanding presented some challenges as well. A couple peices didn't sand evenly and have varying thicknesses. In the future I will try a finer grit.
If you are interested in events run in the Hamilton/Southern Ontario area, such as Social Events, Trivia Nights, or Comedy Shows, check out Hub of the Hammer! They can also assist you in planning your own events.
