  • Taylor Guitars first unveiled the Builder's Edition with last years K14ce Builder's Edition. That guitar showcased the new V-class bracing and a host of other features introduced to make sure guitar ergonomically comfortable to play. The range then expanded to include the 614ce Builder's Edition with the same features but with Torrefied Sitka Spruce and Maple instead of the Torrefied Sitka Spruce and Koa on the K14ce BE. When the Grand Pacific was unveiled in January of 2019, the new body shape was made available in three models, two of which were only done as Builder's Edition guitars - the 517 and 717 models. These guitars made it clear that the Builder's Edition represented Andy Power's "Director's Cut" guitars. The Grand Auditorium models feature: a beveled armrest, beveled and contoured cutaway, chamfered binding (rounded off) and silent satin finish. The Grand Pacific models feature: chamfered binding, soft neck heal, compound neck carve, softened wing bridge, and silent satin finish. The newest model to join the ranks is the drop dead gorgeous K24ce Builder's Edition. With the growing line of these guitars we felt it was time to dive into the nuanced differences in features and tone that is available. So listen closely and see which one is right for you!

    I really like your videos! Very well put together, concise, and informative. I also thought it was gracious of you to mention supporting our local dealers. It makes me want to buy from YOU all the more. I would love the opportunity to talk to you about my thoughts on picking the model that's right for me. Is that possible? It's very hard to find local resources that are as well informed as you on these instruments. Many don't carry large inventory, and your basically stuck buying the one off the shelf if you want one. Thanks again for your great video! Really liking the balance of the 614. Sometimes the low end can be overbearing on the others when in context with a band. High pass filtering is usually necessary.

    For me, by far, for fingerpicking, k14ce. Very balanced, open, rich sound. And it is a beautiful and very comfortable one. K24 is certainly the most beautiful, but to much sustain on bass strings which results in a darker sound. So I would choice K14. Thank you for these very helpfull comparaison.

    I recently purchased an 814ce with the radiused armrest. Thought it was Builders Edition, but it wasn't, so I returned it and ordered a 614ce Builders Edition, which arrived today. The tone of the 814ce was very nice, but sounded very similar to the 314ce I used to own. The 614ce tone sounds balanced across the spectrum, with clear note definition whether it's played lightly or hard. Wife got the BT1 for $99.

    I loved this video covering the various BE’s. Thank you! All offered something different, all great in their own right.
    I picked up a used K14CE builders edition a year and a half ago. One owner, bought and sold back to the same shop. It was in fantastic shape, just a little area of shine where the picking hand rubbed the satin finish to a glossier one. But, it was 3/5th the cost that sold for new, 9 months earlier, and the Koa had opened up a lot. I love it and can’t imagine feeling luckier to own another acoustic guitar in my lifetime. It sounds and plays like a dream.

    At this time there were only three Grand Pacific body shapes available. While the 517 and 717 we're both Builder's Editions, there was also a 317. Shortly after that the 327 was introduced. The 300 series Grand Pacific didn't have champfered edges or contoured bridges. The 300 series also had standard neck instead of the compound neck.

      I just picked it up today...coming from a 324ce and to me it has the warm quality that I love in the 324ce but is a bit fuller and a touch brighter, the rest comes in the form of physical features which are on another level entirely. What styles of music are we talking? I made the decision on the 324ce that I could play traditional country tunes to rock songs...to me the K24ce will perform even better in that regard due to the brightness. I noticed today as I was running it through its paces, it lends itself well to drop D tuning. YMMV!

    OK... I love that mahogany GP. Maybe my favorite. Has the depth in the bass that V class is overall missing. Mic placement was very consistent on all guitars Except the 717ce GP so that one is out of the picture which is too bad because it´s so unique in the bunch. It would be great to do a comparison of all these guitars after a year or 2 of consistent playing when Koa opens up a bit and mellows out giving better lows.

    Chris do you think the v class is a gimmick or here to stay for ever? I really like the 717e because I own a 324ce. So I have that dark wood style guitar. I also have a Koa mini. So I want to get a Sitka spruce top and that 717e sounds amazing. However there is the 614ce and that whole line of 14 series. I’m not a big guy with huge hands do you think that matters if I go with the 717e? Honestly I was all set to get a completely different brand and get the Martin HD 28 but I have been talked out of that by so many people that have said no way get the Taylor again because they just don’t sound so boxy and muffled. So now it’s between the 14 series starting with 414ce on up or do I go for the 717e builders edition. Thanks!!! Ryan :)

    • @cejames
      @cejames 4 роки тому +1

      @the supernatural Its very balanced. X brace purists say that the new v class is thinner, but I just can't see that at all. The v class gives such clarity. That said, its not a booming bass. I have a '73 Guild D40 that is bass beast and I use that when I want big bass. But I've not played a more balanced guitar its not heavy low or heavy high end, just even throughout. Plays like dream.

    Why is the strap button on the back only on ‘builder’s edition’ models? I think that’s really weird. I own a Taylor myself, and I had to move the strap button to the back because it was constantly interfering with my playing. It should be standard on all Taylor guitars. Like you said, it gets in the way when your hand moves up the neck.

      Played one before, it's one of the nicest feeling guitar I've played in a while even compared to some other Taylors and Martins I owned (PS14ce, 614ce BE, 000-42 etc.) I tried quite a few Lowdens, Santa Cruz, Goodall, Kevin Ryan etc, and would honestly choose the Taylor k24ce BE value-wise. It's a very beautiful, great feeling and sounding guitar for the price if you compare them to Lowdens, Santa Cruz etc. Shipping a guitar over long distance like that may affect the guitar greatly (set up, wood, strings etc). I'd say check the neck if it's still straight, check the action, stretch out the strings a bit and give the guitar a bit of a break-in period. It usually will make the experience much better. I hope this helps.

    • @davidtirtha5858
      @davidtirtha5858 4 роки тому

      They have very different tonal properties since they use different tone-woods. K24ce are all Koa which have a very nice, focussed and clear note clarity and separation. It also have a natural compression coming from the Koa and the gloss finish (I feel that gloss finish adds some natural compression to any guitars since it prevents the wood to vibrate as much). The 814ce DLX have a sound that is what a typical rosewood guitar. Strong attack and have a bit of growl with a slightly scooped midrange. Might be overpowering to some. Both guitar is great, but I appreciate the arm-rest bevel on the 814ce DLX that the regular k24ce don't have. Taylor recently has been offering k24ce DLX that got an arm-rest bevel so I would say check those out as well. Hope this helps.

    I own a 614ce Builders Edition so it was very interesting to hear it’s tone compared to the other models, listening through very high quality headphones. What guitar is best for anyone certainly depends on the type of music we play and our expectations. I play mostly finger style so the second demo song was what matched my type of playing style more closely. I found the 614 to be a bit brighter with a tighter bass response, less warm than most of the others, especially the Grand Pacific models. If I had to do it all over again I would still choose the 614 for clarity and response for finger style.

      I have the Taylor GS-mini-e Koa which has the thinner finish and today it is a balmy 22 degrees, thankfully, I never have had a problem. I have always monitored the humidity levels in my music room and when I am done playing any of my guitars for the day, I place them back in their cases. Within each case I also monitor the humidity levels because when the heat is on and/or the fireplace is going in my home I am careful to maintain the appropriate humidity. But like I said, my Taylor is doing great (Thank goodness).

      I agree with the other comment. If you can afford a nice guitar it will encourage you to play more often and get better. So many people give up because of cheaper/poorly built guitars. With that being said we are living in the golden age of well made affordable guitars, but it is always more inspiring to buy the absolute best guitar you can afford.
      Additionally, don’t ever convince yourself that you are good enough for the guitar you really want. However, no matter how much you like a particular guitar if it does not feel good AND sound good to you walk away and find something else, but it is pure magic when you find the guitar that feels great, sounds great, and looks amazing too.

    Beautiful guitars. But hate the Taylor thin sound. .... so ergonomic...but when I buy a guitar I look for tone. Rounded shapes dont impress me. If you think holding a guitar is painfull and uncomfortable, try saxophone or cello... To be honnest, the homerun in tonewood production guitars is the Yamaha FG 5 serie. No bullshit or extravaganza, just tone.
    Now, V shape bracing. It's new. True, but not revolutionnary like martin x bracing. Which is still and will remain the standard. Why ? Because of the bottom end response it brought in lutherie.
    Sorry. Like I said. Beautiful guitar, excellent craftmanship, but it still sound like a Taylor. 🤷🏻‍♂️
