Lambertz-Prize Grand Prix - Team Final and Individual Qualifier.
Overall a good performance, but far from the awesome come back everyone was speculating about.

How could the officials at Aachen allow this LAME and hurting horse to complete his test? I am thoroughly disgusted.

+Thomas F Thank you for this, I think everyone here is trying to be self-righteous and not really watching the horse with calm detachment. it's easy to get swept up in the emotion. Honestly, the most I could see was his hind quarters was lagging behind, but it would make sense, he is getting older, you can't expect a horse to work like a perfect machine until it dies.

How much a horse can change over the years. Totilas was a horse with full potential when he was with Edward. Now he is not even close to 50%. With Edward he gave pretty much everyone goosebumps. The horse was so powerfull. Now everyone only feels sad for him. He gets pulled to hard in his mouth. The person riding him even gripped the reigns shorter when they arrived, while they already where pretty short. Poor Totilas, it's so sad what has happend to you.
I was there in Aachen in 2015, i saw this live, and i still asking to myself how all the German Team including the Rider were joying and smiling after a perfectly clear irregular Horse, i think this has been really inaccetable.
Armer Totilas... ausgenutzt und mißbraucht. Mir kommen wieder die Tränen. Ich war damals dabei und habe es live erlebt. Wie hat man sich an diesem großartigen Pferd versündigt! Das fing ja schon mit dem Verkauf an. Wie kann man ein so einzigartiges Lebewesen verscherbeln wie ein Bündel Aktien!

This poor Totilas has been totally destroyed by Schockemöhle, Rath AND Gal who are all rollkur users. Gal himself confessed it was one of his dressage methods. He had no problem at the beginning because Totilas was young, but now the horse gets older, he's always injured. But we only have to look at his head and mouth to see that he's suffering.
absolutely disgusting! poor horse. I hope we get answers as to why he was allowed to compete and to receive a score that high whilst being so obviously lame behind
Mallory Equestrian Simple the judges are either knowingly condoning it or they are just as cruel as the people who are forcing this horse to work lame.
Mallory Equestrian - It was NOT a high score for him. 75+. I think the judges were correct. He was not "officially" sound but hid it well. Much of his movements were brilliant. Scored from 11th place to 1st. Guess it depended on your angle of view.
if it was any other rider or horse he would have gotten scores in the 60th percentile. If I was judging, I would have given him 4s on a lot of movements which would have brought his scores down to the 50s. The only reason why he got such a high score is because he is Totilas and the judges can't see past his popularity and score him correctly.
A part of me hates that they rode Totilas to the ground, simply because he was the record breaking horse with Gal. Even when his condition worsened they rode him till he couldn't compete. I wish they had done something for him like Valegro, and retired him at his prime instead of showing him to the world, a lame horse. It's tarnished Toto's good name, his wonder image, and has left him a broken shell of what he was years ago. And it's sad because at the end of the day, he was an unknowing horse brought into the world and wrung out for all he was worth because of his natural talent.
Terrible. Very hard to watch. That horse is a wonder, that he continues to give under those circumstances...
Poor Totilas. Lame on the left hind, almost the entire test behind the vertical, trying to open his mouth... Why did no one pull him?! If we can see it at home, how did he pass a trot up? Let alone complete the test?!
It breaks my heart to see what's become of Totilas after he was taken away from Edward Gal. They screwed up big time. Poor, poor horse.
He was broken before Germany bought him. Blame Edward gal, he rides all his horses in the same manner. He broke that beautiful stallion Totilas, NOT the Germans.
According to German websites, the horse was diagnosed with bone edema in the pastern joint. This injury is usually caused by either excessive stress or trauma.

Ganz, ganz schlimm! Der ging hinten deutlich lahm! Die einer Wechsel fast alle parallel, es sah so aus als könnte er gar nicht. Im starken Trab auch sehr deutlich!

too bad he became even more iregular in his hindlegs then he ever was. In the extended trot he walks lame even with his hind legs. I feel for him; if he wasn't so damn famous the bell to dq him would have rang. Sad day in modern dressage; a lame horse is allowed to compete...well forced would be a better word ofc

I just don't understand why everyone is so happy at the end of the video. doesn't they see it?? poor totilas. he's a amazing horse but this doesn't work. As horse and rider you have to be a team, rath and totilas will never be. not like toto and Edward gal used to be. And I even don't understand the judges, the vets. This horse is not ' fit to compete'. and I also can't believe rath, why? its clear to me rath doesn't give a shit about a healthy totilas. Pfff..I'm glad they took him out of the competition. and sadly I don't think he's coming back.

das pferd ist doch lahm! unglaublich. solche taktfehler dürfen nicht auftreten. aber das kommt davon, wenn man von einem pferd so unnatürliche bewegungen fordert. es ist traurig mit anzusehen.

Ich habe nichts gegen Leistungssport, aber dem Pferd muss es Freude bereiten!

Er wurde so kaputt geritten! Ich hab sofort gesehen, dass dieses "Wunderpferd" lahm ist... sowas sollte garnicht erst vorkommen dürfen! ! Die richter hätten abbrechen müssen finde ich! Aber es geht ja eh immer nur ums geld... !!!!! :(
es war einfach nur pure Geldgier und Tierquälerei, dieses Pferd überhaupt starten zu lassen!! jeder Richter hätte Totilas sofort rausnehmen müssen, aber eigentlich hätte das beim Vet-check bereits auffallen sollen.. Tja, Geld lässt mache Vets wegsehen...
I'm not very good at spotting lameness when it's subtle, but this horse is CLEARLY lame. This isn't what Dressage is about. I hope he was pulled from the competition and his handlers questioned as to why they'd allow Totilas to compete.
To think we cant see what they do with him at their facilities...

Este caballo me ha robado el corazón, desde que lo vi con Edward Gal. Es simplemente espectacular, brillante, bello, inteligente y aunque hay montones de hermosos caballos como Valegro o Salinero, Totilas es el número 1 para mi. Pero lamentablemente su actual jinete, personalmente no ha logrado entenderlo, no hay química o una conexión. Me entristece un montón. Desearía que el volviera con su antiguo Jinete y verlo brillar en la arena de nuevo con Edward, como hace 5 años atrás. Best team forever.

Maria, estuve viendo los juegos en Aachen y fue terrible para mi ver a Totilas en ese estado, él no es feliz. Vi a Edward con Undercover (Fritsie) y es algo espectacular, lamentablemente tuvo que ser descalificado, porque sangró, la inspección veterinaria anunció que el caballito se había mordido el labio, salieron de la arena y se detuvo el sangrado. Edward ama los caballos y se nota su pasión y su amor hacia ellos, tengo la fe de verlo en la cima de nuevo (aunque Charlotte me parece fantastica, pero solamente se le acerca a él). Sería muy feliz que Totilas volviera con él, pero si tu lo vez, desde mi punto de vista, tu le das a Edward un caballo bueno, él hace magia con él. Siento que al igual que yo, Edward tuvo que sentir mucho dolor en su corazón, al ver al hijo de Gribaldi, como hoy en dia es tan solo la sombra de lo que fue :(

They didn't make the horse lame, the horse was sold to them lame because the seller probably knew there were issues and as a horse gets older and it's lame it just gets lamer. This poor horse has been push-me-pull-you'd all of his life and the damage was done by not only his current team but by his former team too. You can't rolkur the bejeesus out of a horse and use force in training and then be surprised when the body just can't tolerate the pressures of abhorent training. Rath & Co. were had, and they let themselves be had because they so wanted the glory. Only victim here is this poor horse. If his sperm is viable and he tosses out some good babies with any luck he'll be spared the all too famous "pasture accident".
DressageForTheRestOf of course this is my opinion. For those that think Gal didn't contribute to this horse's condition, think again. I know it's hard to admit when your perceived hero isn't one, but sad to say he's not. He is just another spoke in the broken wheel of today's competitive dressage.
DressageForTheRestOf IThat's not correct. The horse was bought to prevent the competition. Schockmohle admitted that they had the horse breed and then it was injured. For good order, a horse can't be sold when there is a remark of injury. It is about making a fast buck of a huge investment.

Amazing how you can destroy such a fantastic horse, all for money…. Edward Gal you did an amazing job and I miss you and Totilas together. Mathias cant handle the horse like you did.

I'm ashamed on my country. Yes, Totilas is amazing. Yes, he's probably the most famous dressage horse. But no, torturing him isn't okay. I'm ashamed that this is my country. He's such a wonderful horse and I bet he would've been happier if someone actually listened to him and stopped them.

The apparently inhumane treatment of such a talented horse is sad. I only hope his suffering brings change to the sport. I wonder what Edward Gal thinks and how he feels about what has happened to this innocent horse.

Thanks for the upload. I'm a little surprised he scored that high, the two just can't quite get it together. Hopefully they will have better luck tomorrow, or whenever the Special is.
This horse isn't half of what i saw 5 years ago, and it's not all about the rider. He looks lame, tense and disconnected.

Thomas F Let's stick to the facts here. The trouble started with the change of owner. An injury after a breeding session. Failed surgery in an attempt to fix the injury. Dressage in my opninion is a symbiosys between horse an rider. If the rider isn't capable of getting the best of the horse he has to accept that the combi may be bad, instead of forcing to perform. I agree that in this condition ( a bone inflamation) the combi should never have started in the first place.

die Pferde die wirklich noch s schwungvoll gehen,bekommen schlechte Punktzahl...und Totias sollte nicht mehr starten durften,damit dieses arme Pferd endlich nicht mehr gequält wird.

That horse is HOPPING lame on the near hind. Brentina was disqualified in Beijing in 2008 for showing a far less dramatic 'unevenness'. This is a disgrace to our beautiful sport. Don't think that PETA aren't watching us for exactly this type of failure to self regulate. The IOC wants equestrian sport out of the Olympics... why are we giving them fuel to suggest we are cruel, unfeeling and abusing our horses?

What happened to this horse? They took him away from his best rider, Edward Gal. The horse is only one part of that special golden and once in a lifetime-combination... the rider is the other part. Gal rode this horse with no pressure at all, you could see air between his legs and the horse. Gal never “drove” him, he “carried” him. That’s the difference
After Edward Gal won the dressage in london, the owner, Moorland, sold him in 2010 to the stables of Paul Schökemuele for €15.000.00. Mathias Rath tried to ride him but it never went anywhere. Shortly after, totilas got hurt during a breeding incident and never rode dressage again. Last i know is that he was used as a breeding stud.

this was one of the worst tests of the whole championship. I could tell that horse was lame from the first stride the video showed. the poor horse's back, hips and hind legs hurt because of the use of rollker in his training. No wonder why he has been hurt so many times. Just look up his young horse stallion show when he was around 5. His movement was correct and swung unlike his movement today which is stiff and has no power from behind. They need to go back to the german way of riding (classical) instead of the dutch way (roller) if they want the horse to live past 14.

They had Edward Gal and Totilas should never take apart, they were just a great unit. Mathias Rath is a good rider, but not for Totilas.

Hes not lame, hes over ridden, not allowed to just be him and is simply not supported by the ridsr , not connected and not happy. An uneven robot whos lost his expressive brilliance.

Andrea Bellingrodt Ich bin ganz deiner Meinung. Edward Gal hat Totilas auch Rollkur geritten und den Undercover auch. Das ist ja das schlimme. Heutzutage sieht man Bilder die man eigentlich nicht sehen will. Meistens sind das die Männer die mehr mit Kraft reiten. Kristina Bröring-Sprehe, Helen Langehanenberg, Jessica von Brendow Werndl oder Isabell Werth reiten die Pferde nicht so eng!!!

I kind of hate some of these comments. Everyone's either assuming or going "Poor horse"... of course I don't agree with allowing him to compete, but I must agree to one of the comments saying he simply seems to have a bit arthritis, and its probably simply time for him to retire. If it was a legit injury, there's no way they would have been allowed to let him compete. And arthritis is nothing but an inflammation, nothing to do with outer causes. But there's no reason to be shaming anyone or jumping to conclusions especially if you don't know the true story first at hand
Katarina Dusk-starI feel the need to comment on such a stupid comment! arthritis is a very good reason not to be doing any form of dressage let alone grand prix dressage, it is not just inflammation of the joint but also damage to the joint, if you had severe arthritis in your knees you wouldn’t be running at all let alone run a marathon.

Mathias Rath is not the rider for Totilas, he has talent but not talented enough to show this horse properly, watch Rath's legs, like a rag doll, you should not be seeing this nor queues. Put Eddie Gal on Totilas and you'll see a different horse and a winner. Sorry, but Rath is not half the rider that Gal is.
