Help me value some opals

  • Welcome to Black Opal Direct!
How do I value my opal? What is black opal worth? What makes a gem valuable?
I get so many questions on valuing opal, and I get it!
Every opal is unique; if you have an opal, nobody has one quite like yours. That's a big plus for a lot of opal-holics, BUT it also means that every opal needs a unique valuation.
In today's video, I'll show you examples of black and crystal opal from B1 to B5 on the brightness scale and tell you their values. I'll explain what makes them valuable, what brings their value down and teach you to value your opal.
Read the full blog post here: blackopaldirec...

Extremely good info! I've asked people "how do you value opals?", and repeatedly gotten told "an opal is worth what some one will pay for it", which is a bad answer to a completely different question. You've actually gone in depth to answer "how", and not "what is it worth". Thanks!

If opals were priced according to sentimental value, we'd all be rich. One of the nicest opals I can remember to this day was a high domed crystal opal. The transparent, silica part of it was situated above a highly visible, light to dark brown matrix. That would of course disqualify it from a high carat price. What was special about it was that the formation of the matrix was intricate and sharply defined, looking exactly like a terrestrial geographical formation as seen from a great height. Beautifully proportioned canyons and cliffs with winding, narrow passageways, all in perfect scale. The crystal part of the opal formed the sky through which you gazed down upon this captured fragment of the earth, or perhaps some other mysterious planet. It was a revelation. The fire in that sky was an exquisite enhancement to the scene below, and in that regard the matrix never seemed a flaw. Far from it. It was a crucial element. Holding that stone in the palm of my hand and gazing down through its sky was to be gifted with a view from a celestial realm. Even tough it was perpetual daylight, there was an aurora borealis in that sky that rippled from red to yellow with slight movement. At the same time pinpoint flashes of color appeared and sparked like tiny distant stars, orange, green and blue. Lastly there was a lavender aura, like the finale of a perfect pyrotechnic display. That's the best I can describe an opal I last saw 40 years ago. A picture may be worth a thousand words. Opals are more valuable.

I just received my first rough opal (black, from lightning ridge)...totally impressed, even though I was prepared for disappointment. It's got beautiful color around the edge, only a grey potch underneath but truly beautiful, glowing in broad daylight.

I understand your expert valuations. At the same time I quote you on Opals that "speak to you". The one that was slightly milky had more play of color overall. IMO you may have gems that people would pay more for just because they desire them more. Not saying it changes what you know at all. Just a personal tangent.

I like the crystal opals. I had a 5 carat Andamooka crystal opal ring. From your grading, I would class it as a #4 due to a little cloudiness, but with an overall flash in yellow, orange/red, blue and green. Any time I wore it, I was a nervous wreck that I would accidentally hit it against a hard object, but it sure was an attention getting ring! I bought it in Thailand in 1970, and sold it in1990 for three times its original cost. Now someone else can worry about cracking that 5 carat 'egg' :)
