- Welcome to Black Opal Direct!
How do I value my opal? What is black opal worth? What makes a gem valuable?
I get so many questions on valuing opal, and I get it!
Every opal is unique; if you have an opal, nobody has one quite like yours. That's a big plus for a lot of opal-holics, BUT it also means that every opal needs a unique valuation.
In today's video, I'll show you examples of black and crystal opal from B1 to B5 on the brightness scale and tell you their values. I'll explain what makes them valuable, what brings their value down and teach you to value your opal.

Extremely good info! I've asked people "how do you value opals?", and repeatedly gotten told "an opal is worth what some one will pay for it", which is a bad answer to a completely different question. You've actually gone in depth to answer "how", and not "what is it worth". Thanks!
The first stone looks like the Northern Lights!! So pretty!!
It does
Very helpful thank you.
Your subtle silliness is so refreshing..
The B5 crystal is absolutely my favorite. Such a beautiful stone!!
That one is so beautiful! It would make a perfect wedding /engagement ring!
If opals were priced according to sentimental value, we'd all be rich. One of the nicest opals I can remember to this day was a high domed crystal opal. The transparent, silica part of it was situated above a highly visible, light to dark brown matrix. That would of course disqualify it from a high carat price. What was special about it was that the formation of the matrix was intricate and sharply defined, looking exactly like a terrestrial geographical formation as seen from a great height. Beautifully proportioned canyons and cliffs with winding, narrow passageways, all in perfect scale. The crystal part of the opal formed the sky through which you gazed down upon this captured fragment of the earth, or perhaps some other mysterious planet. It was a revelation. The fire in that sky was an exquisite enhancement to the scene below, and in that regard the matrix never seemed a flaw. Far from it. It was a crucial element. Holding that stone in the palm of my hand and gazing down through its sky was to be gifted with a view from a celestial realm. Even tough it was perpetual daylight, there was an aurora borealis in that sky that rippled from red to yellow with slight movement. At the same time pinpoint flashes of color appeared and sparked like tiny distant stars, orange, green and blue. Lastly there was a lavender aura, like the finale of a perfect pyrotechnic display. That's the best I can describe an opal I last saw 40 years ago. A picture may be worth a thousand words. Opals are more valuable.
This was a beautifully poetic description! You painted with words a vivid image priceless as the opal you described!
Super helpful, Justin. Thanks. Seeing the opals of ascending brightness back to back helps me understand. Keep up the excellent work!
Thanks Justin, I learn more every time I watch a video of yours. Fell in love with Opals a couple of years ago...
So glad I found your videos. Your positivity is refreshing. You have a fan watching from Vicksburg, Mississippi, USA. Good health to you and your entourage.
At the end of your videos cutting a stone, I often try to guess brightness and worth. I like the game of it. But this is great info.
Juanita Harris that’s fun to do, especially when you get it right!
I started saving up to buy a couple of your Opals to have made into earrings here in America. I cannot wait! You have the best in the world, keep cranking out those 8×6 ovals!
Justin. I love em all. Really educational video. Now i no what to look for when we can afford one. Thankyou
Very informative Justin! I have never known how beautiful these stones were before stumbling on to your videos. Now I cant get enough of watching you polish and perfect these gorgeous gems! I would love to try it myself someday. Thank you for the great videos. Cheers from Canada!
I think you presented that information BRILLIANTLY! Thank You!
Great video. I could do to listen to opal prices and descriptions for hours.
All the stones are beautiful in their own way. A bit like the subtle dance of the ballarina graduating slowly to the cha cha! Thank you again for your time. Stay well and good health to all Opalites out there. Regards from Dimboola in Victoria.
As precious as opals are, Justin is the real rare gem.
Those black opals with the blue and greens are just soul catching.
Thank you Justin, very generous of you to share your expertise
Very helpful. Gives a much better idea, of the prices, and examples to compare my own Opals. Seeing a live example and reading about them are two different things all together. Thank you Justin.
Fantastic and gorgeous gems! Great information! Thanks for another wonderful video!
Once again you have educated me while hypnotizing me with beautiful shiny gems. Stay safe and healthy!😷
This is the first channel I've actually turned notifications on for. I do really enjoy the videos.
🙏🙏🙏
You're great at explaining things well but simply. Even I, an opal lover who knows very little, can follow you easily. When you turned horizontal for a minute I was left wondering lf my screen had gone wonky. LOL hope you have a great week.
Don't think you need us to value your Opals. But we learn so mutch from you. This Video I have to watch a 2nd time.
LG from Vienna
Thank for that info. I have been for a while watching your videos and they r outstanding and helpful plus so much fun thank you Scott from New Hampshire
You are so welcome!
Another wonderful video. In response to the newsletter I would like to say all your content is amazing, I love the technical side but also greatly appreciate the humour and more lighthearted moments. Sharing what you do, your family and your passion makes every video fresh and a welcome sight when a notification comes in. Many thanks and huge regards from Scotland.
Really awesome Opals..!! Thanks for showing us the differences between them. I love them all. :)

@@blackopaldirect ...thanks for sharing!
Sharing your knowledge with us is pretty cool Justin thanks so much...cheers
Thank you for educating me more about Opals
This is more informative than the books I have, plus I don't have to read. Great content.
I saw aqua in the crystal opals! That's one I don't normally see. Love it!
I've been watching your videos for the last 3 months and have learnt a lot. Though I might try it someday. May visit Lightening Rydge soon.
I like the fact you just don't know how a rough Opel will turn out. I think it would stress me out if I had to take it too seriously.
Love what you are doing.
It's kind of therapeutic during 'lockup '.
Thank you.
I really enjoyed learning with you and everyone today.
Andy
*What beautiful gems you have, good sir! 😍 I was wondering what the value of the B4 crystal opal was. You kind of forgot to mention that one.*
Haha $1500. you were listening well done
@@blackopaldirect very nice and helpful video Justin. Thanks. I assume you are talking about Australian $ en not about US$ when you mention the value in your video’s?
@@tonyvandijk4339 Good question! Actually, Justin has mentioned in other videos that because his audience is mostly American he uses USD for pricing.
Hope that's helpful!
Good video lesson on pricing opals. Really cleared up some misconceptions I had. Thanks!
I'm learning so much from you that I think I'm gonna get some cheap opal and cut and polish with my Dremel. You are awesome dude, thank you!
That was fun, and I'm not expecting a happy dance on all the B5s, but that 2nd to the last, oooo lala.
thanks a lot for this man it's very helpful in opal industry
Thank you Justin, great information, I love learning what I can about all aspects of the field. Cheers.. good work👍😊
Very pleasant video to watch with interesting informations. Keep up the good work! ☺️☺️🙏
Thanks a lot 😊
You sir are a good man. These stones really show your skill as an opal artist/
Very good to watch !
I've never watched anything like this and you blew me away! thanks 😊
Absolutely love your videos great to learn all about the Opel trade fascinating keep up the good work.
Loved learning about the pricing process! Thanks for sharing 🙂
Love crystal opals. Thanks for the vid
I would love to see a video on the different unique patterns some of your opals have. I love these infornative videos.
Coming soon
@@blackopaldirect super excited 😍
I am learning a lot. It's really challenging to decide on the brightness between 2 and 3 and 3and 4 , but I am learning.
Great. The understanding is what I need. All beautiful stones....the last one I used the word opaike. But milky works just fine. 😆 your knowledge is very helpful. I just received my first rough opal (black, from lightning ridge)...totally impressed, even though I was prepared for disappointment. It's got beautiful color around the edge, only a grey potch underneath but truly beautiful, glowing in broad daylight.
I really love how much I learn from you. Thanks!
Hi Justin, great channel & videos you now have me hooked.!!.
so much so that I want to try my hand at cutting Opals.
It is proving impossible to find the right wheels & machinery here in the UK Though. So I will have to make my own machine & import the wheels from the US..
many thanks keep up with the videos they are much appreciated..
Great info as always. I learn more with each video and wish you would write a reference book so all your knowledge would be in one place.
Thanks Justin, I've learnt a load about opals. So, opals that are B1 and B2 despite being black opals, I either stick them on my Lamy fountain pen, stick it on my laptop or chuck it as as my garden pebble. That's my standard.
Sir, you had me drooling!
Love it. Some are gorgeous!!
This is tremendous, like we are getting a sneak peek into a secret society! I think it's great that there is such a wide range of prices. Someone with a smaller budget can still have a pretty opal!
They are all beautiful but my favorite is the first one.
Absolutely amazing information thank you so much Justin
love watching these videos.
Super educational, thank you!
Thanks for this vid, ive been trying to value a bunch of crystal with a lighter body tone, very helpfull
Beautiful stones - I've been working OT so haven't gotten to check in for a while. This will make it more understandable as I see you cutting new stones :)
Always interesting and always glad for the education!
Could you tell us which colours and patterns are worth more, grading like you did in this video, thank you! :-)
Yay another video!!! I been wondering when the next one was😁🤙
Great vid Justin. Can I suggest when moving the gems around showing their gorgeous colour that you move them alittle slower. Absolute amateurs like me can’t get enough of their beautiful colour. 😉. 👍🏻
Sure I can try 😊
Also upload some pricing videos on white opals as well. This is really helpful. Also share some sites to purchase opal at reasonable price directly from Australia.
That was very informative Thanks Justin
Wow that was so educational. Thank u. I love the crystal haha. Love this vid. Hope u guys r doing well. Can you do more crystal opal vids like what colors r most rare, patterns, shapes etc.
Almost 61 k subs! Keep going and hopefully reach 100k!
I give it 6 months
Gawd, u r SOOOOOO funny!! Hello from Canada!! Wish those things would grow in MY back yard!!
A very defined guide / great descriptions / terms 😎
Thank you kindly!
Hey., very intressting and informative ,
I have been making some jewellery during lockdown as well as watching your videos,, of course 😁.
Hopefully I work my way up to opal one day.
Thanks for all your videos,, I always enjoy them , and learn a lot
I`ll love them alllll!!💙 Thank you Justin👍
Very good information.
They are all beautiful stones and call me crazy but the very first opal the b1 with the ribbon is my favorite. I think that it would make a beautiful piece of jewelry
Thank you for sharing your knowledge on the prices on play of collar per cart. God bless you and yours.
I understand your expert valuations. At the same time I quote you on Opals that "speak to you". The one that was slightly milky had more play of color overall. IMO you may have gems that people would pay more for just because they desire them more. Not saying it changes what you know at all. Just a personal tangent.
Bless you Justin for everything you share with us! I'm going to sell a kidney so I can come visit you for a month. ;D
Loved this video !!
Love the second last opal. She's a very sweet, pretty girly one...beautiful utube thank you...
Justin, you make my day so much better!!! Great info and I wish I could cut an opal that would even get to your scale...lol Mine are about 15 watt. sigh.
U r a legend justin
Loved the lessons! No doubt about it, I’m a crystal girl...one day I’ll travel to you with a fistful of cash and pick out the brightest crystal opal I can find!
I will be here when you are ready haha
Great info! I would so love a career that let me look at and enjoy such a beautiful inventory. ( I would love to tell my younger self become a gemologist or learn to cut stones, learn to design and make beautiful jewelry. It would have made going to work much more fun.)
Hallo Justin I am imprest by your honesty , Hopefuly Ican com to Aussy land soon I would like to meet you ofcorse talking about Opals, Best regards Alfred from Basel Switzerland
Muito bom seu trabalho. Parabéns!
again we learn a little more ,,still I do love it when you do the NOBBY DANCE when one really shines
Love the vids! I was wandering where is the best places to sell your opals?
Each one is amazingly beautiful.
i’d hate to have been the teacher who had to read your essays in school
That b4 cristal opal was very nice
Great vid mate 🤠👍
I know they're the least valuable but I just adore those b1 & b2 black opals!
Hi from sunny South Africa Justin... would love to learn more about different patterns in opals!
I might just do a pattern vid 😊🙏
Love your content and channel, thank you! Dude, that screensaver though... 😷
Thank you so much for the valuable video
I like the crystal opals. I had a 5 carat Andamooka crystal opal ring. From your grading, I would class it as a #4 due to a little cloudiness, but with an overall flash in yellow, orange/red, blue and green. Any time I wore it, I was a nervous wreck that I would accidentally hit it against a hard object, but it sure was an attention getting ring! I bought it in Thailand in 1970, and sold it in1990 for three times its original cost. Now someone else can worry about cracking that 5 carat 'egg' :)
Love the videos, can you do a tutorial on how to do back side to set it in jewellery, flat or curved
