  • In this mini-lesson, I go over a few scales that I would use if I was playing gospel, shout, or quartet music. This mini-lesson is in response to a question I was asked on Instagram.

What exactly do you want to learn?

@@edwardv4546 I really want to learn alternate picking with great speed, soloing and learning how to determine if I need to play licks or chords within the solo and how to do both together, and playing chords and knowing which is best for the song

@@day1detail thank you for the compliment! I appreciate that. I can give you some quick pointers. I would start with the pentatonic scale for soloing. Practicing playing the main shape with different pattern variations. And then learn all 5 shapes and work on stringing them together. For alternate picking, I would start with playing only patterns that lead you into a downstroke when moving to the next string. For example, patterns of 6 starting with a downstroke. Get a hard pick (Jazz III) and always use a metronome.
Chords are a whole different story lol. Copy triads from popular guitarists and make them your own.

@@day1detail check out Rick Graham or Troy Grady for alternate picking exercises. Check out Ruben Wan for lessons on chords. For soloing, there are so many resources. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out. Good luck 🫡
