- THE WICKER MAN turns 50 years old in 2023! The British cult horror classic has thrilled, shocked and terrified audiences the world over, and to celebrate its 50TH ANNIVERSARY, StudioCanal have set about the task of presenting the three cuts of the film in glorious 4K ULTRA HD!
The folks at StudioCanal very kindly got in touch and sent me not only the LIMITED EDITION 4K Box Set, but also the lovely STEELBOOK version! Join me as we unbox everything here, dissect what's inside, and my overall thoughts on the Wicker Man film as a whole!

Loved the film when i was younger, I am obsessed better than the Nicolas Cage remake.
Obsessed with this film since watching on VHS in late 80's. I've purchased it so many times before, but when it was announced on 4k in different edition and I struggled to decide....i just bought them all! Can't wait to see the upgrade! Thank you!
Am surprised this box doesn't include the standard soundtrack too, rights issues maybe? Also, am hugely curious as to how the restored scenes on the Director's Cut look. They clearly jarred quality-wise with the rest of the film on the first DVD release 20 years ago.

Thanks for the heads up on HMV. Just went to website and purchased as had 20% off! Steelbook sold out where I looked but wanted the limited version anyway. Looks so cool.

This is an extremely enjoyable EXPERIENCE... How's that, Adam? I LOVE this film. It's so quirky and odd... and the ending is TERRIFYING. I remember seeing it when I was younger, and hanging around with a lot of Wiccans/neo Pagans who LOOOOOVE it. I thought the music was a very strange part, but loved the building tension - and that ENDING! Now that I've seen it a bunch more times, I appreciate how the music really adds to the story and feel... So many films ATTEMPT to build tension with the "town with a secret" plot... but The Wicker Man SUCCEEDS at it. I watched it last week with my roommate - who's an Irishman from Limerick and now an American cop and VERY Catholic... he was completely blown away by the film, and has re-watched it twice since (he's taught himself to play "The Landlord's Daughter" on his Accordion LOL). It may not be a typical horror film... but it is definitely DISTURBING. All these nice, happy-go-lucky people of the village you grow to like... and at the end... I don't say "Masterpiece" very often, but this movie is a Masterpiece. Great review, Adam! Cheers from America!
I've come to love big, fat box sets recently and I was really looking forward to this one, but the pop-up bit has really put me off. It looks flimsy and like there's no way it'll stand the test of time. Seeing how it didn't work properly in this video sealed the deal for me! Such a shame as StudioCanal's other sets, such as the Dr. Who films and Flash Gordon are some of the prides of my collection.
Thankfully the steelbook art is gorgeous - i just wish it included the collector's booklet as well!
The review of the movie really sums up my feeling on watching it as well, it’s not there to be enjoyed it’s there to be experienced. Such a classic though and you really get the feeling of isolation and the policeman slipping into insanity. My two favourite points about the movie that my dad said about it was that it’s actually classed as a musical and secondly Britt Ekland’s voice was apparently dubbed over post production as it was too heavily accented 😂
So sad to hear younger people talk about movies being unusual in that they rely on acting and performances over special effects. Do they even realize how lousy most cgi is? Sorry state of affairs.
Great review on this 50th anniversary edition. I’ve gone with box set on this one. Will be be with me on Monday. I’m that much of fan and collector of this of this I’ll probably get the steel book version on as well. 😂. I purchased the blu ray steel book version when that was released a few years ago. Also very nice. 👍

Good review Adam. I love this film and i still have the old DVD of the "Wickerman" (1973) which came in a wooden box with burnt in title. Definitely a little pricey but what isn't these days. Now all we need is Ken Russels the "Devils" (1971) which most say will never be released?

All my cool, DVDs and Blue-ray tend to be American imports, although France kicks ask when it comes to movies! Sorry Hollywood; Paris just does it better! 🥰😁
@CrazyTobster Yeah, it's crazy how many 4Ks France has that never get released else where.
Like I think last year they got Bridget Jones.
Which if I was into those movies I would have actually got it since it was quite the upscale.

This is cool Adam. I've never seen the 1973 film but will watch it in the next few days. I'm going to talk to author John Walsh (again) about his book on this The Wicker Man the Official Story of the Film here in the next few days so I want to see the film first. Excellent review, another great documentary. I was 4 when the film was released and I only got to see it (TV version) in the late 1980s.
