The Settlers New Allies Nintendo Switch Review

- The Settlers New Allies for Nintendo Switch, a game that was almost Ghost dropped yesterday morning on digital-only for a hefty price point of $89.95. Despite releasing on PC months before hand, and receiving lukewarm reviews, I decided to take the plunge and do a bit of a unique review on it. Scoring it for the game it is, and following up with my thoughts on the sequel it claims to be.

Micro transactions of yo to 75 USD, no offline mode and the same price tag as Tears of the Kingdom? The game industry has gone mad. This should be a crime.
I think I could excuse the $90 AUD price point if it didn't have microtransactions and the online connectivity. It's such a shame because, at its core, it's a great game. If they patch it, I'll cover it as a part of our "Game Changer" series!
@@whatsitlikeau you are not forced to buy skins. there is nothing that changes gameplay
I don't understand the network requirement. Do the devs not know that the Switch is a Hand Held, where people play on the bus, train, camping etc etc. Usually away from the internet. Hopefully they patch that requirement out.
Absolutely. It's one patch away from being a great game. If they update it, I'll cover it as a part of our "Game Changer" series!
Hi Everyone, I just wanted to say thank you for all the kind feedback with this review. I'm very new to it all and hope to keep making reviews. Feel free to check out my website www.whatsitlike.com.au/
Thanks again, I've been very humbled by the response to this video.
Eek! Super bummer, hope for updates and a price drop to $20-$30. Switch has not good RTS atm but I understand it’s hard to do with console controls. I wish some dev would win in that market on switch or console in general. Thanks for the early review, you’re the only channel to get one up so quick! Much appreciated 🙏🏽
I was a bit bummed out by the odd choices they made with connectivity, but it's a great game still. Definitely worth grabbing when the price drops on sale! We need more Strategy games on Switch for sure!
Ancestors legacy is a good single player. Northgard is ok but gets old fast and the producers refuse to add the rest of the dlc to switch
@@Sabinday I've always wanted to try Northguard. Is it worth a go on Switch?
Thank you for this review I know I’m late to the party but I’ve been sitting on my hands about whether to get this game or not
You really cleared up some things
Glad I could help! I still enjoyed it, but it's a far cry form the Settlers I grew up with and loved.
Nice review. I grew up playing Settlers 3 and it was one of my favourites. This looks great fun but at that price, micro-transactions and no off-line play - forget it.
Thanks for the kind words regarding the review! Yeah, the original Settlers games were something special. I would have loved to see some more micromanagement like making food absolutely necessary to operate structures. Lack of offline mode really hurts this game. If they removed the online connection requirement, this would have been 85/100. Hopefully they update it with a patch!
I was thinking about buying but your useful review cleared all my doubts: it's not for me, unfortunately. I'd pay a lot of money for a full priced game, but there are microtransactions and online connection required? No, thanks. I'd move on another similar game to scratch my strategy itch. I think I just don't like how Ubisoft does business. Thanks a lot for the review!
Thanks for the positive feedback! It's a shame because the game is really enjoyable. I'm hoping to cover it again if they patch those issues out. I've played about 10 more hours since the review and online connectivity meant I only got 300 xp total from 4 or 5 matches. No rewards unlocked still!
Would I be unable to play this game on the road at all? I know you mentioned you couldn’t collect rewards, but is it playable at all offline?
I travel full time myself and play offline a lot in remote areas. Unfortunately, you can only play the campaign offline, and Skirmish mode is online only. The campaign is OK and doesn't reinvent the wheel. I did tether the game to my phone to start a skirmish mode, then disconnected after the match started and was able to play the match afterwards. You just need to be online to start the match. Hope that helps!
Doesn't look too bad, great review mate!
Shame about the server connectivity on a console made for offline play.
I'm still playing after the review and it's such a shame it's one patch away from being an 80+/100 due to these issues! Hopefully the game gets updated and brings new fans to the franchise. And thank you for the positive feedback!
please inform us about the fonts size. my vision is not very good anymore but i love the series. of course im talking about handheld gameplay. are there menus with hard to read fonts? do you think tha lite switch will have problem with fonts? its a bit smaller i think
Good morning Gio, I just updated the game and checked it for you and while you can increase the size of subtitles, the UI seems fixed. The build menus are fairly clear but the resources bar at the top of the screen is very small which may be difficult to read, especially on a Switch Lite. There doesn't appear to be any options on Switch to increase the UI size unfortunately.
@@whatsitlikeau thanks for the help. you are great. i will try to emulate the resolution from you videos and print it to switch size to get a close representation and see if ti helps
Moving forward I'm adding an accessibility section to each review starting with Wartales... which may interest you to know allows you to increase your text size and has colourblind mode options. I hope that will help in the future mate!
@@whatsitlikeauperfect. many pc ports have problems with the fonts. informations about that are very important
@@whatsitlikeau i took an HD screenshot from your video and tried to resize it with image editing to the exact size of the switch lite screen. top bar is very small, after all :(
Great review as always, is this patched now? Or still always online?
Thank you for the great feedback, you made my night! Still online only, but good fun if you can get past that!
online-only games are a scourge. Never have they made sense.
Especially when it's required for campaign and AI Skirmish
It’s like the one that was on the Apple Store that Apple removed
I didn't get to play the mobile version. This was one of my first every reviews so they have updated it but I fear the core issues still remain.
So there is no offline? It just price dropped to 50% off but if I can't even play offline, deal breaker...
You can play the campaign offline, but for some reason it doesn't award XP or anything if you do.
Hi guys, the game can be played offline as well. It has been patched in the last months.
Thank you that's really good to know!
Ah, what a shame.
Thank you for the review. Think I will pass on this, unless it gets a huge discount, then maybe.
Would be worth a purchase on sale!
Hey they fixed and of these issues regarding micro transactions and always online?
Still has micro transactions but I've been informed you can now play skirmish online. I'm unsure if it unlocks rewards this way though.
does it have to be online? even though you only play skirmish?
Skirmish is online only regardless of playing against AI. Campaign you can play offline but it's fairly generic
@@whatsitlikeau So the Skrimish game also has to be online, can't it be offline at all? except campaigns
@@cakranohan4645 That's correct, unfortunately, unless they patched in it the last month. Also anything offline doesn't count toward your progress either.
@@whatsitlikeau It's a shame that online games are made at such expensive prices, so should i buy this game or not, or should i buy company of heroes with the same price 😅😅
Hi, nice video.
Just bought the game in sale (€30). I can play skirmish offline when i put my switch in flight mode (and ignore the game asking me to turn flight mode off). Have you tried this?
I wanted to try it, but after seeing what Ubisoft did to The Crew 1, I don't feel like spending any amount of money on the title that can stop being playable at a random point of time because of their stupid decision to make all of their games online only services. Never again anything from Ubisoft.
Yeah it's crazy what's happen with the crew. I think if they dropped the online only stuff the game would probably see more sales.
Oh no lol 😅 I dont play my switch online that is a bummer. Ill stick to tropical 6 lol Im a nerd there
I've got that on my wishlist. Is it any good on the Switch?
wtf this game is not offline? imma get this if i can play in offline mode
Some people have commented you can play skirmish offline now but I'm unable to confirm. If you do play offline you don't unlock rewards though.
While I'd love to see a game like this do well, this one NEEDS to bomb hard....
Crazy, overpriced, stupid microtransactions and always online 😡🤬
This game is doomed from the start
To be honest it does feel like the game was sent out to die, and grab some money while doing it. I love the series and I did enjoy the game but the rewards are a grind and getting disconnected from Ubi servers leaves you with nothing. Fingers crossed they update some of the frustrations!
Is there a creative mode? 😂
No but some single player missions are fairly chilled out. It's quite relaxing watching your peons build your towns
you can select the maps in settings and the micro transactions are rather cheap compared to other games
Thanks mate! I did have someone else point that out too. Personally I was still a fan of the game, but there's plenty of room for improvement. How did you find it?
@@whatsitlikeau I like it except the bad AI
I love spending ages building an economy up and I find myself so immersed... until it comes time to battle, so I feel you on the AI front. Hopefully in a few patches it improves but I still think it's a great game
This new Settlers 'game' is...
1) 100% the result of a developer (Ubisoft) 100% IGNORING all that was good about the previous games...
2) 100% the developer IGNORING EVERY fan and purchaser of those previous games, and instead...
3) Producing something which has been so dumbed down as to render this nothing more than suitable for someone at kindergarten.
4) According to director Christian Hagedorn, the team had to redesign the game as the gameplay systems they originally designed were overcomplicated --> THAT'S(!!!) about as fkn braindead an attitude as it gets, an attitude becoming more and more widespread with today's devs.
I think in the efforts of making the game simpler, they lost the very thing that made the original games so special. The game doesn't compare to the Settlers IV which was my favorite entry. Some people will find enjoyment here, but for us Settlers fans, this isn't it.
Microtransactions in a full price game... some developer/publisher have no shame.
Unfortunately it's becoming more rampant but Ubisoft seem to be leading the way. Helldivers did it well, offering a substantial free battlepass, followed by a smaller paid one that's completely optional.
they opted for too much DURING GAMEPLAY narrative which ruins the game instantly.
especially with the CRINGE opening act Fortnite crappy character models and it just gave me red flags instantly of a game i wouldn't find fun or engaging.
MY main complaints were mechanics have been simplified too much too. It lost what made the originals so special in the first place.
The Settlers 8 is the worst Settlers there ever was. The port has significant issues like the fact that during the _entire_ campaign I couldn't watch a single cutscene without lagging and stuttering. The factions are completely identical, which is an absolute no-go. The production chains are massively oversimplified to the point where every single match is the same. The fact that we had to fight like berserkers to even get a forestry in the final game at all - it was added after _horrendous_ feedback in the beta - is ridiculous. The campaign's story is brutally shallow and terribly written. And it literally has ends after your prepared for one of the main characters to finally close up the search you were on all campaign long. Which makes no sense. It's honestly a disgrace to the genre. The fact that they want you to pay more than 20 USD for this thing is almost outrageous.
It's pretty obvious why Volker Wertich left the development team if this is what Ubisoft wanted him to make. An insult to the great works he created with the numerous earlier entries in the series. He went on to make the Settlers he wanted on his own. It's called _Pioneers of Pagonia_ and afaik it will not be available on the Switch.
Which brings me to one very important point. As a game, Settlers 8 is absolute trash. It's an unacceptable product that should never have seen the light of day and it's a prime example of how corporate destroyed an artist's vision once again.
*_BUT..._*
It's the best game of its genre that is available on the Switch. Because it's the only one. And even though it has the complexity of a mobile game, it's still playable. Is it worth the money? Hell no! But if you're desperately looking for a game that brings the Settlers idea onto your Switch, this is your only option. It's*not good* - but it can be fun for a short time. And most importantly, it can scratch an itch. Which is what I was looking for.
There is no Anno 1404 port for the Switch. There is no Settlers History Collection for the Switch. Ubisoft could make tons of money by porting those titles and releasing them for $15 each. I don't know what they're waiting for. It would be so cheap to do and so effective. They even brought Settlers 2 to the DS. But no, instead they waste MILLIONS of dollars producing something as awful as this. It is such a shame. Gross mismanagement. And it failed so spectacularly that it was probably the death knell for the official Settlers series. Therefore all hope now lies on Volker Wertich, the same guy who invented it all, and his tiny indie studio. Which is such a shame because together, him and Ubisoft could have brought us endless hours of entertainment. But since Settlers 8 seems to encompass Ubisoft's own vision for how a Settlers game should look, and they absolutely ruined everything, I can understand very well why he couldn't take it any longer.
Yeah, it seemed way too simple. They've added water into the game now but it doesn't really do much to fix the core issues with the game. Thank you for your input too!
Ancestors Legacy is 10x better
I've heard that's amazing. I'll have to try it out on my PC
