Nothing beats fresh cooked food like that for sure, I'd argue the saved weight with something dehydrated and just taking a dinky meths stove over gas and a pan is worth it when far from the car though. Mainly because it means you can fit a few more tinnies in the bag 😉

I'm glad that you enjoyed it. You're paying for the convenience of having something in your bag that you can turn into a meal by doing nothing more than adding boiling water and that makes a lot of sense after a day walking.
When you were saying how much cheaper basecamp were I was thinking that they would get some of that back on the posts but it gets shipped for free if you are happy with a 3 day delivery time.

I watch another youtube channel about camping. He uses this brand of meal often. He does recommend those meals for their taste. My question would be: If that meal is delicious enough and filling enough, would you enjoy it for a very cold snowy winter camp trip? If you would then I would spend a bit more so I could enjoy a delicious meal when I am shivering from the cold damp weather.

  • @JamesWilliams-rw6qc

Very expensive for that. I must admit I see very little point in these freeze-dried bags in the UK (each to their own I suppose). The vast majority of people who I've seen use them bring the water with them (avoiding all weight savings), so they might as well have cooked up something like a big stew, portioned it, put it in the freezer, and then take a portion each time they go camping. I think unless you are doing something like the coast-to-coast where you are going to have the odd day you are not near a village or town (quite rare in this country) or get there late and want an emergency meal or two (or you going to Scotland trekking for days in the wildness) you might as well schedule in a couple of pints and nice bit of pub grub for the price your spending or bring something nice with you to eat at camp.
It's I suppose always a balance of comfort in terms of the hike and what creature comforts you take with you to enjoy when you stop and rest (for instance I find the need for a decent pillow worth the extra weight otherwise I have a rubbish sleep). Modern gear is great for being able to have a lightweight sleep system and a rucksack, which means I can now take decent food and drink with me on longer excursions.

I tried my first Real Turmat meal last weekend. I think it was the Kabob stew. It looked just like the one you just tried....lots of rice. They are difficult to order over here in the states and there's not much choice as most varieties are sold out. Overall, I thought is was just fine, well spiced, BUT, it wasn't any better than Peak Refuel or a couple of other brands. I was definitely food curious on this one. I'll order another if I can find one without spending a fortune on shipping. For now, I'd probably opt for something I can pick up on sale here locally. My husband thought I was a bit bonkers, ordering a backpacking meal that arrived from Germany AND we had to go to the post and actually sign for it. Heck, just getting the Real Turmat meal was an adventure in itself. lol

. "Ashoka" brand boil in the bag vegetable curry £1:30, Aldi/Lidl microwave rice, which is also boil in the bag £0:60, Mini naan breads 2 x 3 breads, £0:90. What I'd loose in (the negligible) weight saving, I more than gain in reduced cost and/or that saving buying more food.

      @jeffjohnstone4362 Рік тому

That's maybe fine if all you do is pop out on an overnighter and go back to the car in the morning. But if your need is to carry 4 days worth of food, at least 3 meals a day plus extras, then your negligible weight saving becomes quite significant and things like these become a critical need. Horses for courses.

@@jeffjohnstone4362 Absolutely right, cannot fault you logic Sir.
At my age - 60 - and with 40+ years "on the tools" , 1, to 3 days every now and again is about all I can manage these days.
Compare what is available today, to 30-40 years ago and its another world. Back then dehydrated food was awful, and hard to source, expedition scran was often pasta, pulses, porridge, with cup-a-soup for flavour.
We're I still able, I'd probably invest in a home dehydrator, then vacuum seal it.
Nevertheless, I do agree with your conclusion.

PS: Rough calculation on the meal in the vid and description, you could make 6 or 7 portions of that meal if you purchased the ingredients yourself. Making it just over £3 per meal. You will obviously need to buy bags a sealer which comes in at circa £20 and £10 for 50 decent dry sealed bags….food for thought…..👍

Just to comment that, Im norwegian, and I have eaten Real for at least 12 years now..
Thing is apart from Pinnacle Food from the US, you dont get the same quality as Real. And one big fact is that this dry meals/ MRE stand to its name since they are official partners for the norwegian Army. So we can rely on that food for expeditions and long term exersises.
Its defenatly more expensive to buy from Amazon, instead of knowing where and how to get the Drytech meals cheap.
And surely you can buy alot of food for 18 pounds in the UK, but in Norway not really. And, its pretty easy to boil MREs in the outdoors, compare to preparing food outdoors specially when you habe walk or stand on skiis all day.

Most Real Turmat foods beat out the rest by delivering more meat, more expensive flavorings, and so on. I have seen other Bushcraft UA-cam personalities try 'cheap' freeze-dried entrees: often they seem to feel 'Yuck...' Bit more money in; a lot more flavor out. I agree with just what you are saying: at the end of a hard trek, when it might be cold and rainy, more money spent on a quality meal can pick up the spirits. We cooked our own food but the idea was the same.

I don't get it with the breakfast ones like oats as oats are basically dehydrated anyway and need water. You can buy the bags like these meals come in, I get 8 bags for a quid and add oats and a few chocolate chips ground nuts a little sugar. It costs like about 30p, takes no time to prepare and good calories and tastes nice. Just add water and seal the pack and leave for 5 minutes.Same with puddings just buy the steamed puddings that come in the pots add custard and then heat the bags in hot water like army ration packs. Cost 50p instead of 7 quid for something similar. The main meals are a a bit different though I find it's just noodles, couscous or half cooked rice and struggle to find things to add. That is where buying a dehydration machine would come in very handy. Some of the main meals are really nice thought in these brands I have to admit but still no way worth the prices they are now! Expedition Foods are a good brand but the prices shot up.

The real turmat brand of meals are used by serious hikers and mountain climbers who are used to buying expensive gear as they really on it for survival so they buy the best, real turmat foods latch on to this so I believe they inflate the price in my opinion.

Fine for folks who pop out for one night then back home. But even dehydrated food for 4 full days will be heavy and you'll need way more calories than your tins will offer.

@@jeffjohnstone4362 I'm just showing there is a cheaper option....you don't have to spend nearly £20 on one meal..ok 2 tins of beans and sausage with have way more calories than that packet food.plus the carbs will be massive in the beand..and protein from the sausage...

I totally agree on the price, it's something you'd only play sure to necessity. But if your out for several nights, weight is weight, and somehow needs avoiding. Even £7 dehydrated meals seem a tad dear....

You're not out of your mind, if you don't give it a go you can't criticize it? People just can not handle the little extra effort to cook real food, no single meal could ever be worth that, and that's my 2p's worth.
