- I believe the Tasmanian Tiger (Thylacine) never went extinct. With thousands of sightings across Tasmania, Mainland Australia and Papua New Guinea til this day, I believe a small population of them could still be out there in the wild. In this 4day - 40km expedition we focus on the changing lands of Tasmania and try bring this species back to life.

My brother in law was regional ranger for northern Tasmania. One Christmas in 1983/4 a highly agitated ranger came to his house and discussed a series of thylacine sightings in a region described as 'horizontal scrub' country.
My brother in law later disclosed that the government already was aware of sightings and evidence and had, interestingly, banned flyovers over the 'horizontal scrub country' towards the west of Tassie. Banning flyovers was to reduce disturbance and reduce likelihood of animals being exposed as there are so few of them. The horizontal scrub leaves room free up to under a metre making it impossible for humans to traverse but a highway for short animals. Like tigers.
Apparently exposing the tigers in a planned way was being spoken of at the executive level.
He's dead now but was always dismissive of extinction of tigers.
Horizontal Scrub - just like the Tea Tree forests in Gippsland. You could get lost for days in them, but as you say easy for anything under 3-4ft to pass through at speed. Thanks for the comment as I've always believed that the government know they are still around.

Iv never told anyone this thinking no one would believe but in early 2019 driving through a cut out road on hill in-between Derwent bridge and Queenstown @2am a Tasmanian tiger jumped from the top of the hill down onto the road in front of the car then run off. Before I explained what I seen I asked my partner "did you see that" and she said yes, I then asked her "what did you just see" and she told me it was like a dog with strips running down its back to its tail like a tassie tiger, I was mind blown becuase that's exactly what I seen but to I instantly recognised it as a Tasmanian tiger. They are definitely still out there, I would look around that part of tasmania

Give a search crow as to where it is all animals are territorial they dont venture to far ,they can draw out a radius of about 2 miles
I don't doubt your word. Too many Tassie rangers have privately nodded quietly at this topic.
Yes I saw one around that area as well. I was driving and saw a dog with strips on his rear end and the tail was straight and pointy not like a normal dog. And went behind the bushes. At that time I didn’t know what it was until I found these videos on UA-cam.
Need to specify the place more clearly for the searchers: e.g. Taffy's Ck, Bubs Hill, Nelson Valley etc.
ok but why do we want to capture one??? LEAVE THEM ALONE, we are the main reason on why they went extinct in the first place!

I still believe that Tasmanian tigers aren't extinct; they're just really good at hiding and are probably terrified of humans. It seems like there are a lot of similar animals in Papua New Guinea and other places you've covered, so there might still be a small population out there. I hope your efforts in documenting them will bring them back into the spotlight. I truly appreciate you for what you do. On another note, I have a guy from Australia at my college in Florida who's also a big fan of yours. He grew up in the same area as you did and is always talking about Tassie tigers. thylacines live in my area on 90 mile beach vic.i seen 2 run into a bush 3 years ago and know locals who have seen them here.its great to know

That's why few in authority give any credibility to reports, so many are deluded or hoaxers.
More likely they were yowies in their normal quadrupedal locomotion attitude.

I’m a hunter, and I love animals, I’m very glad to know that someone else has hope that these animals still walk with us. My hope is that we can nurture these animals comebacks, so when they have a healthy population, I can hunt one! And then my children can experience it too! And know that we live in a beautiful ecosystem with all the animals that are supposed to be in it.

If they turn up at all, it'll probably be in an environment thats the polar opposite to their usual. Situations can force radical changes in animal behaviour, especially if the animal can adapt in their food needs. I wish u luck Miller.

But maybe you could look in Gippsland Victoria the area around the Gippsland Lakes on the ocean side has a lot of sightings and an easier area to search for tracks in the sand they were known to be partial to water birds
If you study the animals on your trail cam . they know the camera is there and are wary of it. The Thylacine was almost hunted to extinction. Those that survived have learned to stay clear of man. Some camoflarge might be helpful.

About the Zanzibar Leopard,no,it wasn't rediscovered.
Animal planet didn't release the location of where they filmed the leopard and so there is no way to tell its an actual zanzibar Leopard.
It could just be a feral mainland leopard,if filmed in Zanzibar at all.

Interesting about animals using highways because they're easier to travel on. The exact same thing happens here in Yellowstone Park -- the bison gather in herds and walk on the roads through the thickly forested areas to get to the next meadow, causing big traffic backups, sometimes for many miles.

WOW... I love the fact you were in the midst of history at those middens! The coast of southern California near Malibu also has several shell middens from the Chumash Peoples (who still exist), some middens going back thousands of years. I've seen some of those middens and was in awe. So thanks for sharing info about such history in Tasmania too 🙏🏼

That’s so so COOL
sure tasty the southern rock lobster, but maybe also interesting for your next excursion:there is the endangered but still existing species in Tasmania: the biggest freshwater greyfish on earth, the giant tasmanian greyfish (up to 80 cm long!) which lives in creeks in the northwest of the island. People are nowadays renaturalizing some creeks to ensure their survival in the future. Maybe good to know, that also these animals are on the brink of extinction by overhunting and agriculture/river straightening among other things. ;)
I do understand why a lot of people wouldn't want it known if these animals were still alive, but on the other hand, if it could be shown that protecting wild places was the reason for their continued survival then it might have more of an effect to share that story. Great video Miller!
as soon as you release evidence of a live thylacine poachers will swarm and destroy everything to get one. a live or even dead one would fetch hundreds of thousands of dollars. Its never worth it.

If by some miracle there was a small population of these Tigers surviving in the wild, it would be difficult to know just exactly what to do! Maybe just keep them a secret, as you suggested? Or perhaps capture a male and female and try to breed them in captivity, and help to nurture and raise some in a most healthy environment, to re-populate and re-introduce them back into the wild? A very delicate matter of just how to go forward!

you can hold it in secret and let them live last of its days....because there is no hope of an increasing population. Those animals maybe live like most mamals maybe not more than a decade and should interbreed with at least 300 of its own kind to avoid incest/interbreed. There must have been hundreds of them living in the wild since the last was seen alive . If there is some still alive, it must be found a way to get many different genetics which must be somehow introduced into a eggcell or whatever, or put the last one or last ones into fridge after dying to use its genetics when we have more advanced technologies, and implant in other species or breed it artificcial? So there is not a really hope, even if there will be found 10 of them roaming free there. But it is not a bad thing to keep on remembering the people in which ferocity and greed we eliminate our biutyfull nature ;) and make people think or hope to reencounter such a fantastic creature.
Unfortunately we would have to capture all of them, it goes against my belief that animals belong in the wild, but we have to create as big of a breeding program as possible.
So they put a single male and female in captivity to breed and then what? Get the Joey's inbreeding? That's not going to go work, you need genetic diversity to produce healthy individuals. It would be the worst thing to do to remove them from the wil, at least until they have clear confirmation of how many are still surviving

@@GlennHird-gb4ug If you’re talking about the individual tigers yes, they just wouldn’t really have their freedom anymore. If you’re talking about the species maybe it really depends on they’re breeding behaviour.
60 Minutes just did a segment on this. One tiger hunter (figuratively, of course!) did the howls he said he heard one night in the outback, two, apparently one tiger calling another and one responding. Couldn’t you or someone make a recording of this simulated howling and play it near your night cameras in the hope of enticing one there?
