I love the book, it's what really got me to appreciate Poirot as a character
Me too.
Me too 😁
Same
"Murder on the Orient Express"(1974) is an excellent and very classic mystery crime movie!
One of the better crime movies you can ever watch. Go watch it now!!!
Rest In Peace Sir Sean Connery ❤️.
Amen
He'd sooner be golfing.
Magnificent film! The cast, the music, and the train. The recent version was not a patch on this classic.
Wow that's a cast... And I thought the 2017 had a great cast... This must be one of the greatest ever.
No comparison really. This was the BEST Christie EVER.
Apparently 1st table read they all just sat & stared, no one said a word, Hollywood legends & West End Shakespeareans intimidated by 1 another, & why not? 1st & only time both Bogie's babies worked together.
This is the first and only interpretation of "murder on the orient express", a classic in soundtrack, and atmosphere that can never be copied...frightened the bejesus out of me as a kid..
CLASSIC
@Adele Mele nothing compares with the original...
I have great memories thanx to this film; I saw it on tv in 1979 with a good friend and his parents. We were about 15 years of age 🙂.
that's awesome ...
I have great memories of this film too. Saw it with my entire family in my hometown theatre on its original release. I was 9.
It is Christmas today! I just got this film on DVD and I’m gonna watch it tonight
The definitive version...BRILLIANT
It's fantastic. Always such amazing casts. Wow
Where were you able to purchase it?
@@donmitchell7581 I just purchased it from Amazon a couple of weeks ago for $8.00 and change. (DVD)
It has a great four part Documentary on the making of the film as part of the Special Features.
My favorite Version of the Murder on the Orient Express.
I think I've seen all movies that were made and Albert Finney IS Hercule Poirot. I liked Kenneth Branagh, David Suchet, and John Malkovich portrayals too. The 1974 version is the best .
Do you know Peter Ustinov?
Kenneth is horrible
Tony Randall as Poirot in The Alphabet Murders stinks too
I like Suchet, but the ITV MOTOE version is very flawed and not one of his finest achievements. Finney has a strange accent, but is a joy to watch (as is the all star cast). Whereas the Branagh version is simply awful.
@@andreabollinger9932 And Ustinov?
The great Albert Finney in his greatest role ...
1 of them, he had MANY!
wrong! "Two for the Road" was his greatest role. Peter Ustinov was the best Hercule Poirot.
@@johnbrennan4449
Sorry, but I must disagree. Finney was the greatest Poirot. He was nominated for the Oscar for his Poirot portrayal.
@@PaulTesta Albert Finney's portrayal of Hercule Poirot was closer to Adolf Hitler.
Finney was way better than Ustinov, who offered more an amusing parody of Poirot than anything else. About Branagh we'll stay politely silent...
I don't watch thrillers and detective storyes , but this was such a perfect movie ❤ the atmosphere, the actors, the story itself... amazing ❤️
Same with the book. Never got into detective stories, but I loved Murder on the Orient Express.
The book is my favourite ever, getting me in to reading again. Mrs Hubbard is my favourite character in fiction but the star of this movie is the Swedish ladies' performance. She didnt have many lines but killed it. Everyone did very well. I dont know the older generations actors but apparently virtually all the cast was a highly respected actor/actress and i thought all the main characters were portrayed with integrity. 👍
They wanted Bergman to play the Russian princess, she demurred for the less showy role of the missionary, director Lumet says that after shooting it in 1 close-up, Bergman stood & gave him a kiss, got her the Oscar, which she graciously said during her acceptance speech should have gone to her competition, Valentina Cortese.
@@unowen-nh9ov wow and she's playing a secondary character! Just shows how much talent is in this movie. Agatha Christie adaptations deserve this kind of respect from film makers.
@@Goatvarro 1st time it happened, apart from classic original And Then There Were None & that wasn't Poirot. Google original British title of 1939 novel & Amerikuhn "improvement" to see how far we've come. & have yet to go, J.K. Rowling.
yes Ingrid Bergmans facial expressions are amazing!
@@larciabellaIn Casablanca they hadn't written the ending, so she had to play her entire performance without knowing her character's emotions. Didn't stop her from being brilliant.
So many notches higher than the branagh nonsense with a stellar cast of characters.
About to watch it now with my mum. I love a good classic murder mystery 😌
The beginning was dark, even for its time. Still kind of haunts me to this day.
Sadly, inspired by actual Lindbergh kidnapping, where baby was murdered.
Loved this version. Despite my preference for David Suchet as Poirot, I reallly didn't like the version of MOTOE he was in. Give me this one every time.
I would have loved to see Ustinov. He was the most in character for me.
Suchet is always my #1 choice for Poirot, but I didn't like his version of this story. Way too focused on religion and God, when that it nowhere in the original novel, where Poirot submits his solutions and doesn't hem and haw or grieve over what God will think about everything, and when the authorities choose which solution to believe, he retires from the case and he's fine with it.
@@jhornacek My thoughts exactly. I totally agree.
My favorite version.
I agree.
I think my favourite is the New movie
I prefer David Suchet's version.
@@ClaudiaNR65 Many do, but Finney's was 1st & best, had Finney not been 1st to successfully (Oscar nominated) bring Poirot to screen, there may have been no television adaptation, unlike Sherlock Poirot had been neglected or abused on other media for most of his history, Finney changed that. Like Connery made 007.
these actors, a class of his own - nowdays the most came not even close...
It’s a real masterpiece! My hat off to the cinematography. The BSC is an enlightened artist for the time…and now in 2024
Whoa! Albert Finney was also Hercule Poirot?
First Scrooge, then Poirot! What a career?
Tom Jones & MANY others! Wonderful with Audrey Hepburn in Two For the Road.
He was also Daddy Warbucks. Versatile indeed.
Literally watched this film last month. Loved it. Not seen the remake yet.
Don't.
the remake is good
@@inducedbycoffee
I agree. Don't bother with the remake. Stick to the original every few years. The remake will disappoint you.
@@PaulTestaI wouldn't watch these old boring movies, cause these are only for old people in their generation. Same like new generations prefers watching skibidi toilet. 😂
@KIMPOY971
Well, to you, 1974, I guess, is old. To me, 1944 is old; so it's all relative. I was fortunate enough to see the original MOTOE in my hometown theatre with my entire family.
But now, as for *boring*...??
This movie has a stellar cast, a rich and frothy score, great set design and costumes, and all directed by the inimitable Sidney Lumet! I'd hardly (ever) call that boring!
Watching this masterpiece after 2017 version
Hopefully it exorcised all images of miscast Kenneth Branagh ridiculously rolling in the snow as a kind of James Bond with moustache.
Magnifica versión de la novela de Ágatha Christie!
I love the mother of pearl leaf necklace Jacqueline Bisset wears in the second half of the film.
Idk if I wanna watch the 2017 movie, but I have seen this movie, the 2001 TV movie and the 2010 episode.
I liked all three versions but this one is the best.
What a cast!!!!!
For me this is the top version. I didn't like the newer 2017 version at all.
The remake was AWFUL
What a Casting!!
One of the best ensemble cast in history!

Lauren Bacall and John Gielgud would later star in the last Poirot movie with Peter Ustinov as the Belgian detective, Appointment with Death.
The best version 👏👏👏
I scored this version on dvd today at a store by pure luck I’m so happy I get to enjoy it more now
Forget the dopey dvd, get the new Dolby Vision 4K blu ray
Agatha Christie was still alive when this movie came out and she said Albert Finney was perfect as Hercule Poirot. She loved the film.
I love this movie best
Yes this is now available on 4K blu ray
Colin Blakely and Dennis Quigley would later star in another Poirot movie with Peter Ustinov as the Belgian detective, Evil Under the Sun.
Good morning, thanks for the video 🤝👏👍👌
I have a curiosity, which I couldn't find online: in the film, Albert Finney seems "stuck" with his back and neck; why that rigidity? Is it due to some accident, or is it a cinematic fiction? If the latter, why? I thank in advance anyone who can answer me 💖
Muach better than 2017, sorry.
Great movie version !
That is a very good trailer!
Albert Finney is still the best Poirot
No David suchet is

You can't seriously compare finney and ustinov to suchet
Epic
I was kind of hoping for a case that I the viewer could figure out myself but it was pretty impossible in this one. Maybe I'm a bit slow and maybe it's easier to figure out by reading the book but with all the "suspects" and Poirot and others not being the easiest to understand in parts it was impossible. That's probably why I'm not a detective. Great classic movie though with a stellar cast.
Don't knock yourself. To be fair, THAT ending is off the chain & amazing!
Try the '78 "Death on The Nile"(as I haven't seen the 2022 version yet)- it's equally mind 🤯.
1 of many times Christie would turn whodunit tropes on their head.
Magnífica película
There's been many actors who portrayed Hercule Poirot, but none more accurately than Kenneth Branagh.
Are you joking 🫠
Albert Finney lacks the proper Poirot moustache.
Edit: To be clear, I still love the film and it is definitely better than the new one.
The books never definitively describe what the moustache looks like, just that they curl up at the end, and Christie often describes them as "moustaches". So each Poirot adaptation is free to portray the moustache as they see fit.
Your right, Even christie herself said that the mustache wasn't good
Could you please add a warning for the flashing and fast moving images in this video for people with photosensitivity please? Thank you in advance!
If I remember correctly, the Butler was the muderer in like 35% of all of Agathas stories. So we have at least a lead for this case.
Both Miss Mallard and Fim inspired this book however Miss Malard advettures episode was based on 2 books Crime on Orient Express and Death on Nile
Lauren Bacall ,Simply the most beautiful woman ever lived
At the Oscars that year the nominees for best actor were Finney, Pacino, Hoffman, Nickelson and Art Carney. Guess who won?
Art Cartney Harry and Tonto. ..
@@narcissustarrazona5580 Deservedly so?
@@rievans57 Depends on who you ask. All the other nominees were Oscar veteran’s but Carney’s was unexpected and audiences liked the idea of Ed Norton being an Oscar nominee and Academy voters liked the idea too, they embraced him and the quirky film. And they probably figured the other nominees would win somewhere down the road. And they all did, with one exception, Albert Finney .
@@jennifersman7990 Only Finney was starring in James Bond @ end of his lengthy career, like O'Toole & Burton, Brits (or Welsh or Irish) don't need Oscars to be Best Actors.

kenneth branagh totally unsuitable for the role..he transformed poirot into superman
Completely agree. Superman, James Bond with a (ridiculous) moustache, you name it. Shudder to think how he may have butchered "Death on the Nile".
I believe Kenneth Branagh truly loves Agatha Christie and Hercule Poirot, and that he's trying to make the Marvel Cinematic Universe generation love them, too. And since he's actually directed a movie for the MCU (Thor) and other mainstream movies, he's in the unique position of understanding what parts of the modern superhero formula he can inject in to Poirot to catch on with modern audiences. I think he's worth mentioning in the same breath as Suchet or Ustinov.
@@SylvesterFox007
He was much better in the new film that has just come out. He feels less of a superhero, especially as he is in a unpredictable and unprecedented situation, yet his take on Poirot is still very uniquely in his style. The balance is right, and I feel like he’s finally hit a home run both with the character and the films, I didn’t like the previous 2 that much but A Haunting In Venice was very watchable and held my interest.
Looking back at this masterpiece I understand how horrible Kenneth Branagh's film truly is, mostly because of himself as Poirot
Are Jacqueline Bisset and Michael York the only survivor of the cast in 2022?
Is this the only one he done
yes
They didn't give Doctor Konstantin's name or Foscarelli's name or Hardmann's name......
George Colouris played Dr. Konstantin.
Denis Quilley and Colin Blakeley played Foscarelli & Hardemann, respectively.
Albert Finney was good and fun to watch. But for me it’s either Kenneth Branagh or Peter Ustinov or David Suchet
David suchet is the definitive poirot
So before James Bond mett Indiana Jones he met Hercule Poirot theory James Bond is indiana Jones father

Heyyyy guys am first
Albert Finney was a great actor, and he does the absolute most with the character of Hercule Poirot and is entertaining as heck to watch . . . but he's still probably my least favorite Poirot. His version of Poirot is so over-the-top weird and that gravelly Belgian accent is so distracting. Especially now that David Suchet and Kenneth Branagh instilled the same character with so much more humanity even while keeping all of his eccentricities still on full display.
I love the over-the-top weird because that's the way he's written.
Finney ONLY Poirot to be Oscar nominated Best Actor, he is unrecognizable from his many other GREAT performances, was performing on stage @ night & bringing his theatricality to this performances during the day, he was my 1st Poirot & only 1 I find watchable, his over the topness makes suspects underestimate him, while Ustinov is too comedic, Suchet effete narcissist (undeservedly so) while Branagh wears CGI rodent for mustache.
@@unowen-nh9ovwhat does cgi have to do with his character? You should at least give a reasonable excuse if you have favouritism.
My god, a rare miss for Finney. He absolutely BUTCHERS the Poirot role in a way not seen until John Malkovich's version; a version that lowered the bar so far, its red hot from the core of the Earth.
So when Agatha Christie saw this movie and went on record to say he was the closest thing to her interpretation...she was wrong ?....good or bad in people's minds don't matter....what does is the original...whoever played the part first...every actor afterwards can improve or change what the last actor did or didn't....fine example...Sean Connery as Bond..many say Daniel Craig is the best, he's the sixth actor to play him, of course he fine tuned the part...see what I mean
Other actors hadn't really taken Poirot seriously as his own character (Austin Trevor basically made him Sherlock Holmes and Tony Randall basically made him Inspector Closeau) so the bar was set pretty low during her lifetime. I wonder what Agatha would have thought of Ustinov (her daughter didn't approve; she famously told Ustinov "Poirot's not like you" to which he replied "He is now, my dear) or Suchet. I think Brannagh's doing a bang-up job, too. Finney just played up Poirot's weirdness. Ustinov, Suchet, and Branagh balanced out the weirdness with more humanity.
@@SylvesterFox007 Finney hams up his Poirot so the suspects don't take funny little man seriously & underestimate he is by far smartest person on board, had Finney & Connery not successfully transferred their famous literary characters to the screen, they'd never have been heard from again, like most movie detectives & spies.
@SylvesterFox007 There's Ian Holm's portrayal of Poirot in "Murder By The Book". I also wonder what it would be like if Holm was casted as Poirot in this adaptation of "Murder on the Orient Express".
Yes, that explains his Oscar nomination for Poirot.
Eh, i prefer the new one.
I preffer this one.
I prefer this one.
I agree MiCAwber 72
The trailer is not great but the actual movie is better than the new one
@@roseprimviolet5852 I've seen both, still prefer the new one. But each to his own!
Not a good movie. It's rather pedantic, with lots of scenes dragging on for no reason, even an aesthetic one for that matter. On the other hand, many short scenes are too short for their own good, resulting in them not making any kind of sense in terms of plot development or artistic meaning. Also, the characters are not one bit interesting. The director doesn't seem to be even remotely interested in who they are and why are they the way they are.
@Ma/ Prz/ Everyone's a critic. It is a great movie.
Director did MANY classics incl. 12 Angry Men, here he revisits theme of justice by jury, just in a literally much more colourful & all-star fashion!

funny acting, and I don’t mean hilarious kind of funny
Yuck old saggy movie ughhh
Yuck old saggy ignorant troll comment about a classic movie ughhh
Go back to watching Fast and the Furious ugh
This movie is absolutely terrible, too many insignificant scenes that lacked meaning or added to plot development, over eccentric mannerisms of poirut and the worst of all the ending how truly flat, the director insinuates that it is ok for normal citizens to carry out there own murder to be justified for another mans doing... just truly terrible movie and painfully boring
Pretty much every scene is from the book, and they are all significant in that they are key to the murder before and after the truth is revealed. The "over eccentric mannerisms" of Poirot are right out of the books so they are completely faithful to the source material.
"the director insinuates that it is ok for normal citizens to carry out there own murder to be justified for another mans doing" Yes, this is right out of the book. It's the whole point.
The only movie version of her books that Dame Agatha liked. What you term "insignificant" is vital for plot structure and kept me riveted. To each his/her own. And the grudging acceptance by Poirot of those people taking the law into their own hands is pure Christie and much better than the shoehorning in of all the religious/conscience stricken stuff into the Suchet version.
That's just the way the book ends.
The movies have been culprit or over dramatizing Poirot
1974: best character wise
2010: why would he be so emotional when people lie to him, he should've used to by now
2019: unrealistic portrayal of the character with ocd tendencies, and his search for balance.
Poirot in the book was just content with how he solved the mystery, how deep inside he believed what Cassetti did was unforgivable and how he understood the motives behind everyone's actions... He presents the two possibilities weaving all the lies together and then what really happened not because he is trying to sound smart In a "Ha! Knew your plan all along" it was for them to be on the same page when questioned by the Yugoslavian police.
He was perfectly fine with letting all of them go, he just wanted peace and now that he finally was able to solve the mystery, there wasn't anything else that motivated him, not even the culprit behind it all.
All-star classic obviously over ur head & 2 gud 4 u!
@@unowen-nh9ovjust because it’s older doesn’t mean it’s good or better..that’s what people perceive “older is always better”..people should stop being egoistic for once and agree that sometimes new is better
