I still don’t Understand how you can make an escape room in a book. Usually escape rooms are designed to be accessed online. I don’t understand how you proceed from one stage to the next in a book without clicking on anything.
I know, I found it strange at first too. If you research some of the books on Amazon, you'll see that most of them are based on solving puzzles of some kind to get the solution to 'unlock the door' or 'escape the room'. Quite clever really.
My guess is it's similar to those rpg (role playing) or choose your own adventure books, where you are fed a story each chapter and by the end of each chapter you are given a series of choices. Depending on the choice you make you are redirected to another part of the book that progresses the story with your choice woven into the narrative (as you can imagine this can get quite complex and requires a lot of writing, as each choice that is available requires a separate chapter or passage in the book located in various parts depending on how the book has been structured). Also I've seen where some people make it into a literary video game in that they award points or special weapons or tools (or pitfalls and defeats) upon choosing certain choices. Hopefully this made sense!
The only way I can think of to do this, is to create an overall theme for the room, then plot out what pages will be the actual room (maybe as the room is explored. So from different angles and showing different sides and corners of the room), but the key is to show it as the game progresses only!
So to make it so the player can progress through the room, (it's story so-to-speak) is by making it so the player is prompted to search for something (probably a few things per page), and FIND IT, BEFORE they can go on to the NEXT PAGE because the last clue they find on the page they are on, will be a NECESSARY prompt/clue/item used on the next part of the room (which of course, appears on the next page).
So that would be how you can progress the play of the game in a book form.
Exactly like in a video of the game, but each new scene, (which contains several things to find via prompts/puzzles/riddles, etc), is similar to a still or screenshot out of the video.
You can also think out the book version as if it was the storyboard for the video game.
So the key is to plan the game as a progression of the steps needed to escape the room, and have several things on the page to find via clues!
(so a thought would be to have the clues on the left page, and on the right page is the room< or part of the room, or even break up that page into several images), and the last clue solved is the one that allows to player to go to the next page, and use that item or clue to begin solving fir that new page in the story.
