  • Every America’s Cup match is special, but from this day forwards every one is unmissable. After winning the only race of the day yesterday, Emirates Team New Zealand were on match point, 6:3 just one race away from being able to lift the oldest trophy in international sport above their heads. Matt Sheahan talks to regatta director Iain Murray about the pressure and the event and chews the fat with INEOS Team UK crew member and expert commentator Freddie Carr. PLUS our regular wrap of the day.

    Iain Murray and his team did a great job. I didn't hear any real complaints from any of the teams. He delivered the memorable final race course he (and everyone) wanted. Well done for giving him a chance to chat. Thank you for all your work during the competition. Watching from Panama there were few options other than UA-cam and your coverage made the racing all the more enjoyable. Cheers a lot. 😂

      👍yes...the event is too short in order to show the boats in full range of conditions and to give the teams enough time to improve in racing 'environment' ….I think, this America's Cup should be similar to F1 circus.. having a number of regattas thru out the year in different parts of the world....maybe 2 years of development and then 1 year of racing around the world, with the world champions ( America's Cup winner) announced at the end of the racing year!!!

    In the end New Zealand out designed, out thought and out sailed the opposition. The start and first beat on that last race was perfect match racing from ETNZ. They should put that in every training course for would-be match racers.

    I still think that most of the coverage of the America's Cup commentaries were biased. The contenders were worthy, but little was mentioned about the sheer hard graft, the commitment, the teamwork and the hospitality that the Kiwis showed. Their help on American Magic and Grant Dalton saying 'IF you need it, its yours' was the epitome of sportsmanship and selflessness. No mention anywhere.... next time, I hope we get better and unbiased commentators.

    Freddie's comments about the current format of racing are spot on: 25min stadium match racing with ultra fast high-tech boats is captivating to the sporting lover who may only have a casual interest in sailing. 2hr offshore races are less appealing. Source: I am the target market.

    Maybe Ian Murray & Jimmy can get together to organise an Australian campaign. If you remember in 1987, in Perth, when New Zealand were knocked of the challenger series. Normally the defeated challengers would support the winner of the challenger series. Instead of supporting Dennis Conners Stars & Strips, winner of the challenger series, new Zealand supported Australia. The reason was it was better to keep the cup in the Southern Hemisphere. But all for nought. A second antipodean campaign would support New Zealand’s retention of the cup on the next cup cycle when these boats are more figured out. Where’s the money in Australia.

      @@thepunishernzl Lessons learned would be go back to how the Kiwis did it from the start. Australia did it first by winning the cup from the Americans but unfortunately didn't follow through when the interest was high at the time. On the other hand, NZ carried on the interest and now the Cup is built into the Kiwi's DNA similar to the All Blacks. Both codes well respected by most Kiwis. I think the key is, get your local government to partially fund a challenge, and then appeal to the ordinary Australians for support. BTW don't steal our Glenn Ashby, he is ours!

    It's a pity this was an infrequent La Nina summer weather pattern up in the Pacific, with all of these onshore easterlies. Most summers we have an El Nino effect of various strengths, which provides regular sou-westerlies like clockwork in the afternoon and would have seen Course C come alive on a daily basis.

    @PlanetSail... Short races are a really bad deal for the sponsors. It is hard to justify dropping a couple of million on sponsoring an America's Cup team to your board of directors when the race is only one hour long. It is particularly a bad deal for the sponsors of the defenders of the cup as there is no visibility of your sponsor's brand during the challengers series. In total, ETNZ got about nine hours of racing visibility for their key sponsors during the America cup.

    Throughout this regatta I have said this is THE best commentary above all others (exception would of course be the in depth analyses from NZ TV1 contribution) but I fail to see how one can make a bold predicament as the next race going to LR? Based on what? The "if" factor? But to do so ur more likely basing ur experienced opinion on ur feelings? No disrespect but that's hardly a fact one can stand by as the facts are so much evident when the NZ team had the worst possible situation at the worst time but with the skill and intimate knowledge of there yacht, they pulled off the impossible to get back on there foils, without any boundary violations to do so, then maintain that delicate position to hold steady under extreme desperation, to run down LR, who had an unassailable lead but had certainly not managed there yacht to stay up and consequently bottomed out. And here's where ALL the expert commentators b4 and during the race got egg on there face and only lauded LR when they were self humiliated by there lack of experience to re foil and get back into the game. With almost a full length of a leg ahead, approx. 4-5 minutes head start, they were run down and beaten by a team who not only stayed focused after one of a few to many bad judgement calls. If LR was so good with a yacht that was according to all those experts, equal if not BETTER to win the Americas Cup from the kiwi's then y the hell didn't they. Now, the resulting humiliation has befallen the LR supporting commentators they have now gone on this regurgitated spin the kiwi's won because there yacht was faster! Not because the kiwi's were the better sailors or they read the wind shifts better or they were so confident of the yacht's capabilities, no! It's just laughable but not surprising they wanted LR to win, period!

    • @Tom_McMurtry
      @Tom_McMurtry 3 роки тому

      @@dogaet hard to say by far. LRPP higher sailing mode suited the starts and they sailed extremely well with their experience from previous races, and in the wind range that least disadvantaged LRPP. ETNZ adjusted and learnt from each race, and used their faster boat to effect. But they also sailed extremely well to capture the final races and pick their way and the winds across the course with innovative manouvres, including that textbook last race. It would have been exxiting to see a 20 knot race with boats going near 60 knots but alas. The next cup perhaps.

    enjoyed your channel, however there was another yacht out there yesterday apart from LRPP. And Burling is 2 from 2. Spithill 0 from 2. In respect of the starts Spithill had the upper hand with LR higher mode. It made no sense for TNZ to engage. Burling was on a hiding to nothing. Hence race 10s strategy to split and protect the right. The reverse was evident at Bermuda when the kiwi boat had a height advantage, and Spithills starts looked decidedly average.
