  • Fifty years after Horse Creek Girl's remains were found, a seemingly simple tribal identification project blossomed into a complex, multi-discipline study. As a result, we now have an idea of how the Horse Creek Girl may have lived and died, and we get a different look at early reservation history than we may be accustomed to.

I worked with Dr. George Gill at his lab at UW. I was the one who identified the U.S. Army officer's braided hat cord therefore establishing a timeline of 1872 on the remains. Dr. Gill is a brilliant anthropologist and it was a pleasure working with him.

My grandmother was a Blackfeet, She would tell me stories of her childhood and her people's lives. As a kid I would spend summers with her in Osage County Oklahoma. Pawhuska and Barnsdall. We would go to the land office and get some food. It was for the more part powdered everything. My mother would always bring different foods for her . She was always treated as a different person . I as a kid noticed it . This was in the sixes . It has always bothered me .

Great Documentary. The Starvation Winter of 1883/84’ took the lives of over 500 Piegan/Blackeet’ that were confined to the Old Agency Montana. That Winter was likely equally as bad for the Eastern Shoshone. Old Snapshot photos of the American Indians are the best testament to what life was like during those years-along with the few historical honest writings that document it. Tragic episodes of Humanity we must learn from. It wasn’t just the American Indians that struggled! Many immigrants and common folk went through Tuff times🇺🇸

I have discovered a gold mine in Wyoming PBS, Bravo. What these people have been able to do is amazing to me. The revelations of what our federal government is complicit of is not surprising to me but horrifies me to my core. Were it possible I would charge them with crimes against humanity in the form of genocide against indigenous peoples across this nation. To the Tribes, I grieve and am truly sorry for the crimes that have been perpetrated against you. I know they are hollow words, my heart is broken none the less.

I spent several months in Wyoming over the last 2 years and I have learned so much by visiting and then looking at Wyo PBS to fill in other information. This documentary really touched me. I never knew that the indians (native Americans) were treated so poorly- that they were forced to stay on the reservation and starve them.

I still experience racism till this day but that doesn't stop me from telling what happened and still happens. It's unfortunate but as much talking and educating as we try to do, change comes only when someone is ready and willing to understand.

I am Winnebago and today we still make the same kind of moccasins that were worn when the government force marched us out of Wisconsin to Minnesota, to South Dakota and finally to a reservation in Nebraska. We still make the same clothing with the same designs. These are traditions of our culture that we held onto even after the boarding schools tried to remove all traces of memory. It is horrible that people possibly stole objects from the grave before the proper authorities could take control of it. As a trained Archaeologist I can understand the need to use the remains to properly identify as much as possible who this young woman was so she could be returned to her people for proper reburial - it would have been impossible to leave her where she was originally buried simply because there are too many horrible people out there that might dig up the remains for whatever sick reason. The facial reconstruction hit me hard, I was already angry and teary-eyed listening to how the native people were treated - the corrupt agents should have been shot! How could you expect starving people to farm for food!!! It is insanity. I'm in the process of reading about the Dakota War of 1862 which was caused by corrupt and greedy agents and politicians the resulting execution of 38 Native men, the imprisonment and abuse of others and the treatment of their families was despicable.

  • @WyoWise

How are you suppose to farm w/o farming equipment in soil that was extremely poor? It grieves me to think how the indigenous people of America were treated by the white man...no respect and preconceived notions of the native American Indian were usually untrue. Starvation was the white mans chosen form of genocide of the native Americans. How could we have been so cruel?

In all honesty it wasn't the Government that starved them, or impoverished them. It was the Indian agents. The Indian agents mostly took half the money meant for the Indians, for themselves. The rest they bought food for them. Very little food, and mostly rancid meat, that the butcher shops were throwing away. They had very little scruples, if any. The Government really had no idea what was going on. Just some reports and complaints that never made it too far up the ladder to the people that would have cared. Look at every Government intervention in anything. At first it might start off ok. That's ok, not good. Then later because of the Government handles things. It turns to sh&t because of corruption.

Those are the remains of a human being. They should only be handled in the most respectful ceremonial way. It's disgusting to see people handling human remains like they have no descendants to be horrified. The remains should have been left in place, given ceremony, and protected. We do not need to know who she was or get political. You are totally "playing around" with remains.

    • @debbibowen

But the remains had already been moved...decades ago. They found out who she was, so she could be returned to her people rather than sit in a box in the coroners office.
