    video was fun to watch, the one thing that always help me judge my food 100 cal per Oz of food.. love the complet cookies, if I'm going for a bar, love cliff bars well over the 100 cal per oz

    So good to see you with your friend! I actually LOL with you both. If the protein bar has high protein/nutrients and least weird sugar taste (per your friend) with NO fructose or sucrose I can tolerate a bit of bland. Gluten free is good too! It's worth reading the ingredients.

    I like the simpler Larabars ... like the Cashew or Peanut Cookie ones. I also like Mezcla bars (but they can be hard to find in stores) ... all of the flavors I've tried have been good but I keep going back to their Canadian Maple Blueberry bar. Thunderbird bars are good as well but not high in protein (very similar to Larabars but better flavors ... I love coffee so their Hazelnut Coffee Maca bar is one of my favorites. Another brand I like is Taos Bakes ... Pinon Coffeee & Dark Chocolate has been my favorite bar for over a year and it has a bit more protein than the Larabars/Thunderbird Bars. They have several other flavors as well. I've got several dietary restrictions and all of these bars have treated me well.

    smart going from vegan to pescatarian for the trail. You can work with that. Protein and healthy energizing fats from the fish

    I don't know if they fit your dietary requirements but I tend to lean into and have better luck w/Kind bars and RxBars. I have done this same thing....just not all at once. Not a bar, but you can get the little tubs of peanut butter which are nice to have to mix things up.

    You asked for it.
    L&L cookie: You will need a solid box for them or else they break in your pack/food bag. Sometimes you can just press the crumbs together and this will form a new cookie, unfortunately not with L&L. They are extremely dry. There are mint and birthday cake flavored ones. I would carry these flavors as an emetic in my first aid kit only.
    As you will start in February, I would just put all these bars in the freezer, take them out and try them when they are still frozen or cold. You will have cold temperatures until May.
    The Gatorade ones survive the cold well and will be still acceptable to eat.
    The Cliff Builder bar is horrible to eat when cold.
    RX were used by John Zahorian himself on the PCT in 2022, so if its good enough for him it should also be acceptable for us. They "sweat" and get an oily texture when warm but it's far better than all the bars with chocolate coating.
    A problem with all of your bars is that none of them has a lot of vitamins and healthy stuff in it. There are Huel bars but you have to order them online.
    In gas stations you will also find the MET-Rx bars, 410 Cal, with at least some vitamins. Not vegan.
    I am not sure, if it is necessary to abandon veganism for the AT. There are towns stuck in the 1950s but countless vegans were there before you so there is quite a variety with vegan options. If somebody has absolutely nothing in this range they would get asked several times a day.
    Apparently protein puck is also a great option. Vegan, organic and non GMO. They are also cheap but need to be ordered online as well.

    Pro Bars are awesome. They are plant based protein and gluten free. They have turned out to be my favorite bar when out hiking. My 2 favorite flavors are: Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip, and Blueberry Muffin! Try them!

    This was so much fun!!! Thanks for all the input as protine bars can be pricey and this helps to get an idea of taste and flavor before wasting money on something I might not like. Loved meeting your friend!! #teamstella

    The peanut butter Gatorade bar is one I can eat even when I'm tired and nothing appeals, and it keeps well if you only eat part of it. The L&L I had tried before and my stomach didn't like it, but I think I'm gong to try again. They have so many flavors!

    Fun video! But the sad reality is thru hiking is a daily endurance event. Protein is the last macro the body wants during the day. It's too complicated to convert into usable energy while exercising. Complex carbs with some fat and a little protein is optimal for most people. Of course, do what works for you but there's a reason why marathon runners and triathletes don't focus on protein during the event. However, if these protein bars are going to supplement your recovery at the end of the day then rock on! Good luck!

    • @JaredandTasha
      @JaredandTasha Рік тому

      But the goal here isn’t to convert the protein into energy. That would be silly

    • @fluffbigrollingmarshmallow
      @fluffbigrollingmarshmallow Рік тому +2

      I was going to say the same thing - a protein bar at the end of the day maybe, but not during the day while on trail - your body uses too much energy to digest/convert protein, and you need that energy for actual hiking.

    • @JaredandTasha
      @JaredandTasha Рік тому

      @@fluffbigrollingmarshmallow you don’t want to lose muscle mass. Especially lean muscle mass. protein is the protagonist of this.

    Had to chime in. Vegan on trail is very doable. I know from experience. I would offer that reflecting on the reasons for being vegan might guide your decision. There are a few UA-camrs that have thru hiked major trails completely vegan . At the end, it is a personal choice. I just wanted to be a voice for staying true to your vegan choice. It would be amazing for any vegan that is planning a thru hike to post it to show it is possible and not an inconvenience.
