Historic Families and Surnames of Appalachia and the South, S3:5
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 лют 2025
- Welcome to Episode 5 of our third series on the historic Families of Appalachia and the American South. Today’s families will take us back to England, France, Ireland, Scotland, and Switzerland. If you are new to the channel, I mix in a bit of history, genealogy, and trivia along with the origin and meaning of requested surnames. Today, we’ll be looking at three such families, with two being nationally and even internationally significant. My main goal is to identify families that have been in Appalachia and the southern United States since before the Civil War. In most cases, they date back to colonial times, which is certainly the case today. This series is dedicated to the memories of those who gave us life and freedom. If you would like a free copy of the Surname Catalog that lists the names and episodes that have been covered, stick around to the end to find out how you can get one. It's just an email away. It promises to be a good show, so I hope you’ll join me.
Thank you, always interesting!
@@jby6277 Much appreciated!
I always learn something new every time. Thanks for what you do.
@@sandrataylor3723 Thanks for the kind message, Sandra!
This is a good episode, Dr. Barry. The David Crockett Birthplace State Park near Limestone, TN experienced so much damage during Helene that it is currently closed.
@@bluebird218bn That's awful! Thanks for letting me know.
Sad, I mourn for the lost of that history for future generations. Now, ever ceasing prays for the people.❤
@bluebird218bn I live about 10 minutes from David Crockett Birthplace State Park. I've been many times. They're asking for volunteers to help get the park cleaned up. Hopefully, it'll open again in the future.
Thank you for another great video!
You're welcome!
Thanks for all the work you put into these videos👍
@joannasusanna Thank you, Joanna. It only matters if it is enjoyable or useful.
@@BarryVann I find them both enjoyable and useful.
I 'bout forgot to mention a 2nd cousin Philip Mark Breedlove. His folks were from Cherokee County, NC. His grandfather and mine were brothers. Look him up!
@papaw5405 Are you talking about the retired 4 stat general?
@@BarryVann One and the same!
Thank you for another blast of info. You hit on many connections to ancestors and even to where I live! I live on a road off of Crockett’s Cove. They were cousins of Davey Crockett. I live in Wythe County,Va, which is also the home of Steve Austin, the “Father of Austin, TX. We even have a pre-civil war Crockett home with a Union cannon ball still lodged in its roof. I love history and enjoy your channel very much.
@@bonnisnow369 Thanks, Bonnie! It sounds like you understand my mission to show folks that we are linked to history.
@@BarryVannYes, I grew up believing I was a 3rd generation immigrant from Italy. My genealogical research has showed so much more. I have deep roots in this country that I am so proud of!
Thank you for your wonderful cultural channel dr Barry. I looked up for origin and meaning of surnames you mentioned briefly here it’s the surname Ammon was first found in Switzerland. The name originated from much honored position of the land Ammann , who was the highest official of a Swiss canton ( province). But as a surname it became prominent in Bavaria where it branches into many houses , many of which played important roles in tribal and national conflicts, as each group seeking power in an ever - changing territorial profile. The name can be primarily traced to an old Nobel family from the city of Augsburg, another branch posses the castle lauffen berg in the district of Altmuehl . BREEDLOVE IS AN ENGLISH OCCUPATIONAL SURNAME LIKELY DERIVED FROM OLD ENGLISH “ bridel “ , pronunced “ Breedlove” means to catch or curb, and Anglo- Norman “ louve “ or wolf . Crockett Is a surname of British origin, which derives from the Middle English word “ croket “ , means “ large curl” , although some are also derived from the French name “ crocketagne “ . I hope you like my research. Best wishes for you your dearest ones .
@@Khatoon170 You're welcome, Khatoon!
Outstanding. God Bless America...
Thanks, Lawrence!
Every American origin story is filled with incredibly strong people.
We are all of hardy stock!
But I feel a little mushy at 61!😂
Had a Swiss Grandmother on my Mother's side whose Deadweiler maiden name goes back to a Joseph Deadweiler who immigrated from Switzerland to a Georgia colony near current day Marrietta in the 1700's I believe.
I could never find info on what the name Deadweiler actually meant. Perhaps the Brain Trust here can point me to an answer!
Thank you!
Awesome channel!
Being a patriotic American who loves his family and country should be a virtue.
Good word, Barry
If you haven't been to the Alamo recently, another visit is recommended! The iconic image associated with the fort is only the chapel building and that was primarily what was preserved. However, in recent years there has been an effort to reclaim portions of the original footprint of the entire fort's footprint that has allowed for a large expansion into the plaza in front of the chapel. This includes numerous informational installments and replica portions of the fort that better illustrate the expanse and function it served when it was constructed.
@@Vyraxia I was there in April 2019. I will visit again. Thanks!
You mentioned many, for sure, of my origins countries 🤗. Plus, I haven't been to many places but San Antonio TX I have. Agree the Alamo is small & most impressive River Walk riding in a small boat being Serenaded by the Mexican Band. 😎. TKS for this one.
The River Walk is a must-see, as is the Alamo. I hope all is well in sunny Florida!
Could you please do a peace on the Alamo
@@lucyalderman422 That would be a good one. Thanks, Lucy!
Hi, Neighbor and it's 80 outside and sunny and I've been on the porch and snuffed down a bunch of fresh air already! Met that Papaw knows Preacher Ernest Ammons from around Jackson County if he's still going and I had a picking budd named Breedlove that his mom played a FINE clawhammer or frailing style banjo and he was a luthier and I have a metal bodied Dobro that he made a walnut neck for and an OLD resonator as well. Has other musiciniers in the family but he has gone on. Happy false spring and wear that Triumph out! God Bless ALL Yall!
@lewiemcneely9143 Howdy Lewie! It's awesome outside here, too. My son, who owns a Yamaha, and I knocked off a gorgeous ride yesterday. Did I understand you to say that you know the Papaw to whom I was referring?
@@BarryVann Not really BUT if he's an Ammons I probably know some of his kin around Sylva. The Preacher'd get wound astight as an 8-day clock!
I don't know Ernest personally but I do have him in my family tree. There is an Ernest Jr. and Sr. Sr. died in 2018. Ernest Jr. was born in 1962 and is still alive as far as I know.
I own a Breedlove concert size guitar. It was built in Bend, Oregon. I bought it for the name mainly but it is a fine instrument. It looks like honey and sounds as sweet.
@@papaw5405 I've heard Earnest preach a bunch and he'd get intense really quick! His wife was named Bessie but it's been a while. There were a stack of them there. Jim Ed Powell and the red headed one you could hear for miles- EDDIE STILLWELL! Lanny Nations, Larry (bondo) Bryson, Johnny Ray (doc) Davis. J B Chastain. James Baxter Breedlove was from Toxaway and Glouster. Lola May his mom was the banjo picker. Jim was a dobro picker. I just tried to make everybody else sound good. LOTS of good SOBER times!
Davy (Daniel) Crockett resented Gibson County, (West Tn) Tennessee in the State Legislature. My father's family moved to that area about 1820 or 1830.
@debmc369 Yes, indeed, he represented counties in West Tennessee. Thanks! I don't know about Daniel, though.
Ammons in deeds of Buncombe Co, NC. Crockett in NC Land Grants of East TN. Books on Southside VA may be helpful as they deal with former VA residents who relocated elsewhere. Especially reference to Power of Attorney documents -- persons [often relatives] in VA acting on behalf of former residents relocated elsewhere such as TN, KY, GA.
Always enjoy.. In out community there was Breedloves and also Breedings. My wifes family also were Hugenouts..Des Mulloun's..which became Mullins.....Paul..
@@pdrake2572 Thanks, Paul! I hope all is well in Ohio!
Do you have anything on the Whitt/ Whytt family?
To answer your question, I don't recall researching it.
Breedlove and Crockett are both part of my family 😂❤❤
Craig Breedlove set the world land speed record numerous times in The Spirit of America in the 1960s. I remember when he visited the Cotton Carnival in Memphis in 1966. I got to sit in the Spirit. When we visited the Riverwalk in San Antonio, some years back, our boat driver saw my Missouri shirt and said, "Hey, anyone famous from Missouri?" I answered, "Stephen Austin." He replied, "I guess I'll shut up now." I've been to the Alamo many times.
That's awesome! I've been there once.
I don't know if you have ever heard of Allenberry, Boiling Springs, PA? Davey Crockett's Uncle James Crockett owned the land in 1778, where Allenberry is located.
@@suewarner1781 I have not heard of Allenberry. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
@@BarryVann Allenberry Resort is a playhouse, restaurant and accomondations. Shirley Jones and John Travolta both performed there, years ago.
I just searched your list again, from January 12, 2025, and don’t see Callaway, Douglas, or Boone. Boone, Callaway, and Henderson, plus several others were Boonesboro founders, as part of Transylvania Company, Callaway and Henderson married while at Boonesboro.

A cousin married into Breedlove family. They lived in Missouri.
@@sandyhawks5240 Thanks, Sandy!
Breedlove is in my family but I don’t think blood I think just married into.. thank you very interesting
Have you run across “Denham” folks? I think it might be English.
@@vickiedavis8679 Yes.
I had always thought that Breedlove had come from someone whose propensity was to breed love. I was surprised to learn it was quite the opposite.
As far as the Ammons surname we pronounce it Am·mons. Am as in, "I think, therefore I am". My father always said that the Ammonses came from the Pennsylvania Dutch which strengthens the Amish theory, however my Ancestry DNA results don't seem to bear that out in ways I expected. I only recently discovered that I am 18% "Germanic Europe" which may include Switzerland. Ancestry keeps changing its regions so I, just a week or so ago, took a 23andme test which, I hope will shed more light on my origins. I will let you know if anything interesting appears.
@papaw5405 Sounds good! A couple of years ago, Ancestry didn't show that I had any Germanic ancestry, but like you, I now have a similar percentage.
About the name Lovern3
Je ne-parle-pa le franchais . Can't remember much as my spelling shows !
@@barrychandler5250 i don't speak French! 😆
I recently learned that I am Y-S5520 Y-DNA Haplotree.
That's great! What does it mean to you? There in lies its significance.
@ it amazes me that I’m part of a family tree that goes back for thousands of years. I don’t feel so alone anymore as I’m part of something real. I didn’t realize what my past meant to me.
Always interesting! Thanks 😎👍
