Born and raised in this little town. Best childhood ever. Grandma’s and Sunday School every Sunday fried chicken and gospel music o the back porch while the kiddos played red rover in the yard. Amazing memories!! Wish my kids had those kind of memories and kids were raised that way instead of iPhones and iPads. It is full of beautiful and kind hearted people. Nothing like a small town. They all become family.
I met a girl who graduated from WVU. Her folks were OSU graduates and really wanted her to go there. She transferred for one semester and then transferred right back to WVU. She said the mountains were calling....

I was stationed at Fort Campbell, KY for years and traveled a lot in WV. I absolutely loved the scenery there. People were always great and helpful. Very religious and down to earth people.
These in the vid are beauty..but unfortunately a lot of the WV mountains look like moon craters. Its sad what the coal companies did to the WV mountains
The reasons the town is "crowded in" is that it's a mountain town with not much usable flat land, and it was built at a time when most people didn't have cars. When you mostly walk to get where you're going, you mostly build things close together.
Yeah I worked at a summer camp in western NC high up in Appalachia and everyone was great. I have many friends I still stay in touch with, and don’t even get me started on bluegrass! I love it! (I’m from England)
My whole family is from Man. And my 5th great grandpa is Valentine Wall Hatfield. I was born in those hills and I will die in those hills. I’ve tried and there’s no other place I can call home
I was born in Man just two months before the Buffalo Creek flood. My father was at the dam just before it broke and ran up the mountains to escape the waters. My grandfather served as a liaison between rescuers and the radio station, calling in when residents were found alive. I don’t remember the flood but I have scores of fond Man memories. Thank you for the walk down Memory Lane.
My husband’s father is from Logan County, and one of my husband’s uncles was on the dam half an hour before it failed. Little is known about surviving family members in the Buffalo Creek area, except for an aunt who had been living in Laredo. So many people died that day and many more live with the memories.
I remember when that happened, don't remember what month but it was in 1972 when I was in eighth grade, I lived in Southeast Ohio and we got our news from Channels 3,8, and 13 still remember the news reports from there, also in November of 1970 a plane carrying the Marshall University football team along with local supporters and coaching staff crashed while trying to land at Tri State Airport,as I recall one of the players was from Man W Va.
@@HonorableBeniah-A explain please your danger in West Virginia? And why not to visit. I was planning our vacation for this year which included parts of wv.
@@louann4992 Ignore them. Now, there are racists and bigots there, but they exist throughout the entire US. In my honest opinion, Alabama is more dangerous than WV by a long shot. Most people are kind and genuine, and if they are bigoted, they wont tell you to your face. Its worth a vacation.
Hi, I’m from northern Vermont. My uncles and I canoe The south branch of the Potomac River almost every spring. It is a 12 hour drive. WV is one of the most beautiful states. The people are real, honest, cool people. Lots of small mountain towns. Rural. We have in over 20 years, explored lots of the state. I’m from the country, so maybe I’m bias, I would rather break down in the middle of bum hole WV, then NY, LA,Chicago…. I almost bet someone would stop and give me help. Not I’m a city. Not only do I visit whenever I’m can, when my kids graduate, I’m moving to West Virginia. So I would suggest definitely visit West Virginia, ignore the haters, they have obviously never been. Hope that helps.
@@cariemorgangraff4829 I will take hillbilly over city boy or city slickers any day. A younger man at work last week couldn’t understand what I said and told me “sorry I don’t speak hillbilly.” I told him its about time he learn a second language!
My mind is blown by how much most of these West Virginia towns that you show us resemble most of the West Coast and northern half of the South Island of New Zealand. Man here gave me big Picton and Greymouth vibes. The Tasman sea crashing into the towns (with a fair bit of violence tbh) is the only huge notable difference at first glance. I'm growing more and more fascinated by this epic stretch of continent watching these videos from the opposite side of the planet!
ShaleNinja... My mom was born in Man and grew up there. I love it. It is like home to me. I lived in Masterton, NZ and I loved it. Going over the Remataka felt like going home to Man. I agree 100%. I have been to Greynouth as well when I lived in ChristChurch. NZ quickly became a 2nd home to me.
Marie and Ninja...that you two have this connection is mind-blowing !! God Bless the small new world of You Tube. PS: : Relatives in Beckley and Blue field. I'm from the hills of SE Tennessee and married to a beauty from Hong Kong 42 years already. Love you, Marie, for stepping out into the bigger world, while staying grounded and proud.

@@edwardjackson1418 Coal mining was not good to coal country. Mountain top removal; polluted streams and water; polluted air; black lung disease; cave-ins, etc.. On the bright side: at least the few coal barons got filthy rich off the blood and tears of others.

Thank you so much for this full-frontal shot of Man! I never expected such a good view. It's awesome that you took the time to look the town over, up and down. Even from the back way.
I am so glad that you are proud to be born raised and bred and West Virginia everyone should be that way about their Homeland just as I am about Kentucky the great Commonwealth of Kentucky and my opinion in my humble opinion you cannot find a greater place live raise your children and retire and as Kentucky I am very partial to Southeastern Kentucky that's where I'm at right now this is where I was born and raised I have been and lived in other parts of Kentucky it's my home but they're nothing like being in the hills of Southeastern Kentucky thank you God for planting me in southeast Kentucky
From Philly, but I’ve driven through WV, it’s visually stunning even though I can’t get the movie “wrong turn” out of my mind while there. Anyway the landscape is beautiful.
My mom's ancestors are from WV, and my mom was born in there. I've always wanted to visit the state. I heard that my great, great, great grandfather was a union organizer of the WV coal miners.
Mine are too Valerie R.! Both sides of my family are from WV. My great great grandfather was Albert Mullins. Mullens WV is named after him. I absolutely love the state! Almost Heaven West Virginia ❤
Now I have been gone from WV for over 5 years. I am babysitting 2 little boys age 5&8. I started in Seattle WA and now find my self In New Mexico. The little ones keep me on my toes
What I like ‘ bout your videos is dat ya sho da real side 🤔 & not just the Hollywood side Ya sho dat these are real people with real struggles & living real lives Thanks 🙏
I’ve just stumbled on to your videos over the last 24 hours and I’m really enjoying them. I really believe these are some of the most beautiful areas of the country. Watching your videos is a nice escape from my daily Chicago scenery. Keep up the great work.
thank you so much, I went to Chicago for the first time a couple of years ago. It was super cool but so different to experience as I am sure you can see.
I worked as a music teacher in Man Jr High School during the 1985 school year. It was snowy and the schools closed for days on end due to the poor road conditions. I have never been so sad and depressed; it was a lonely time except for the nice people like Glen the band director and his family. Mr Reedy was my landlord -- aka mr greedy. Phyllis was the music supervisor who had perfect hair!!
Yes, it is a matter of what I call "poetic" way some people look and dream of these places, completely turning the blind eye to the fact that there is a reason why people leave these places. I like these places, but only to an explorer level, yes they are beautiful. Will I settle in a place like this? Maybe. I even came up with my own joke, "One of these days I am gonna leave the city, take a couple thousand $$$ with me and buy a house (for a couple thousand bucks) in an abandoned coal mine somewhere in WV and stay there till my last day"
"I have never been so sad and depressed" ---Winter does that when it's 20f, dark at 5pm and you have no where to go but home after work (if you have a job) to waste the hours until tomorrow when you do it again.
I was born in Logan west Virginia.i lived in mud fork.i sold a church the property we lived on.its been years since I visited.still have a lot of family there.thanks for bringing me back home to visit.
The old health center was the Miner's Hospital which was originally built and maintained with funding by local citizens and the UMWA. It ultimately closed in 2001 and the majority of the main hospital structure was demolished in 2012 with the medical office annex remaining standing as you saw it.
I’ve been there. I was driving through the state on back roads, and went there purposely because of the name! It’s like everywhere else in WV, a lot of struggles, people have left, but good people stay on. Scenery is beautiful. I stopped and mailed my rent check to NY. In Mingo County, I got pulled over by the police for “looking like I was lost.” Every year I go this happens in rural areas in the south. It’s because NY tags make me suspect. They think I’m there for drugs, firearms, or sometimes fireworks. I’ve never once been ticketed or charged with anything.
I hate that, being pulled over just because your tags are out of state. It’s harassment. I am a woman who travels alone. Cop or not, I don’t want to give you my what all. You are a man I don’t know in a place I am unfamiliar with, and I don’t warrant your attention.
I forget each state has their own plates. In the UK its such a small country that the identifying letters that show what region it was registered don’t even get noticed as cars move about all over the country from traders.
I was raised in man but moved to Nc after high school. I miss the mountains and small town. There is no work unfortunately unless you go into the coal mines.
I’ve been through many towns similar to Man, this is real USA, the heart and backbone of our country. WV is a very beautiful state - forget all the jokes about it
The "backbone" of the country? HOW?? what do y'all contribute to the countries economy? You people make fun of states like California meanwhile all the businesses and innovations that help y'all comes from here. Which backbone? 🤣🤣
Something that fascinates me is turn up any side road and you'll find homesteads on hard Scrabble red clay where a miner/farmer raised 8-15 kids! I love speculating where they all scattered to and what they become. I love Appalachia. You've said often on these vids, there'd be no big urban centers were it not for a miner! ❤️
@@b1k2q34 I understand! When I see videos from those areas they look & feel just like home. On one video the road the person was driving on looked so familiar I was convinced it was an area here in Vermont that I'd driven on myself until he said where he was! Beautiful country!

Thanks Shane! I'm a (northern) California boy myself but this looks like home. I grew up with a lot of folks from Georgia ,Louisiana and Mississippi who's families had come west to work in the timber. We have much the same cultural challenges with downturns in timber hollowing out and erasing beautiful communities. After seeing this video I really want to park my Harley at The Fire Pit and enjoy feeling at home in a new/old place.
My husband was born and grew up in Weirton WV. His father worked for Weirton Steel, I think the whole town worked there. I met him in California but I always liked the warmth of the people in WV. When he passed away I took him back to be buried in Weirton next to his parents.
I lived in Veto for 2 years when I was a kid and I really missed leaving there. I love WVa and the Marietta, Parkersburg, Belpre area. I really miss it still.
I retired from the Army after 30+ yrs and moved to SE Ohio (Morgan County) afterwards. I had my choice of moving anywhere I wanted to and I decided on this area. The geography is beautiful, people are really good, and with the weather I have 4 seasons but no extremes. I've been all over the world and Appalachia (Ohio, WV, Pa, eastern Ky & Ten, and western Md) has some of the most beautiful park like scenery. Little to no work but a great place to retire to!
My wife and I are soon moving back to East Tennessee to retire. After our last scouting trip, we came up empty handed and discouraged. West Virginia is beginning to look like a great alternative.
Well you almost made it to my house when you turned and went back through Main Street. Some of the nicest people you will ever meet. I moved to NC for about 6 years but I came back home to mine that black diamond. Thanks for the recognition! 👍🏻
Been to Man many times for work. Also, my father worked in Buffalo Creek after the flood. He was a Transmission Lineman for Appalachian Power Company. He said that the destruction was almost as bad as what he'd seen as a combat veteran in the south Pacific during WWII.
Nothing wrong with"Hillbillies". Beautiful country. Wonderful Step dancing and fiddle playing~true indigenous culture! A decent society would help these families with what they need instead of abandoning them. I'm thinking of dentists, doctors, health clinics, schools. etc being dotted over every little Appalachian community and all within walking distance!
I’m thinking they should move to where the jobs are, if they need those services. Not our job to support their lives when they can forge new ones elsewhere. You know, like all of humanity has always had to.
I'm a proud Hillbilly who now lives in Tampa Bay. Hillbillies Class of 82, with lots of family still back there. I make it home to visit every couple years. And yes, it was originally Buffalo City before becoming Man. You can find the original plat of Buffalo City at the Logan County Courthouse. I did a couple thousand abstracts of real estate titles back when I had an office in Logan. It's sad to see the old towns in Southern West Virginia slowly die as the coal is being mined out.
Hey there! I'm up in Inverness, been here since 2014. I moved down from Southwest Virginia. Clinchco (Clinchfield coal camp) is about a 2 and a half hour drive south of Man. So that's would be what...15 minutes as the crow flies 🤣 Glad to see another coalfield hillbilly (what a great mascot) down here.
Lived just north of Chiefland for 22 years in the boonies. Hated to move but we got old. Cruise nites in Inverness were always fun. Wish I could remember the guy in zoning in Tampa. He was a hotrod car guy and lived near the nudist resort east of Tampa.
@@modeladenny1218 I had a laugh when you mentioned the "nudists resort". When we came upon that, my husband said, "We have definitely left the coalfields." 😆 Nobody mentioned the rainy season or that sand was impossible to keep out of the house before we moved down here. I'm still trying to decide if moving was a pro or a con. 🤣
@@gidget8717 We loved NW Florida. Near a game preserve and the Suwannee river. Found out shag carpet in the motorhome and double wide wasn't a good idea. I was born and raised in WV, will be raising my children here also. As far as I know, without the assistance of an ancestry searching service, my ancestry has been here for generations on both sides. I don't know any relatives of either my father or mother that came from anywhere but West Virginia. My grandfather was well known in these parts for his fiddle playing back in the day. Growing up in this small little place was something that as a younger person I thought a trouble and was mesmerized by the thought of big cities and fast internet, but after I had kids and even the small town scared me for them, I am so thankful to be in WV and not to have been accustomed to big city living. Now I do not think I could endure a big city life. My husband's family are from California and Maryland, but he has fierce West Virginia pride. Hopefully our kids will too. I love our state!
I used to play drums at Blue Hole and downtown main street. People tipped me all kind of things, money, beer, weed, jimmy jones, pizza, hot dogs and condoms too. All in downtown Morgantown. People loved the drumming. I MIS IT.

My grandparents lived there many years and we visited often. Dr. Harold and Henrietta VanHoose started the well baby clinic at Man Hospital (the one you passed). His office was on Main Street on the left at the end of the video. There was not a pharmacy. He dispensed medications. He delivered many babies in people's homes. They had a lovely brick home built on McDonald Ave. I recall two times the Guyandot River flooded their house. When the Pittston Coal Company dam broke in 1971 and caused horrible damage and death, my grandparents assisted. They moved to Florida later in the 1970s.

Beautiful mountains❤️ I grew up in a very small town in Southwestern Ontario, Canada. It is called Tilbury. Due to the many farming families/blue collar workers who live there, people there were called, ‘Till-billies’! Lol
In the North there are Northern versions of the Southern Rednecks. I think they are called Podunkers. There is a nation of Native Americans called Podunks I head not sure.
Be careful calling someone "hillbilly." I moved from So Cal to the south a few years ago, and made fun of a person's accent. As i got to know her, i realized she was an amazing person with more kindness and integrity than i'd ever known in a person before. I learned my lesson about using the word "hillbilly" or making fun of an accent, etc.
You should also learn that the local high school mascot is a hillbilly. The local school is the Man High Hillbillies and they're quite proud of it and rightfully so.
@Blake Hudson Her husband told me i was like the "Beverly Hillbillies" in reverse--i came from the city and was clueless about country life. And i was. He could open his window and shoot a turkey or squirrel, whatever, right in his own "back yard" (acres of it). They cooked squirrel once and had me try it without telling me what it was. When they said it was squirrel, i could not believe i had eaten some of it, and even liked it a little. They were awesome people, very friendly and nice.

The reasons the town is "crowded in" is that it's a mountain town with not much usable flat land, and it was built at a time when most people didn't have cars. When you mostly walk to get where you're going, you mostly build things close together.
It's called a 'haller' or more formally, a hallow, a common geologic formation in this region of Appalachia.
Thanks for the explanation. Very interesting.

My whole family is from Man. And my 5th great grandpa is Valentine Wall Hatfield. I was born in those hills and I will die in those hills. I’ve tried and there’s no other place I can call home

The hatfields and McCoys were always fighting with each other that is so cool you are related to the hatfields
It is certainly beautiful there!
You can take the boy out of the hills but you can't take the hills out of the boy.
Wow, what an experience to have had to live through. Im sorry you had to deal with that.
My husband’s father is from Logan County, and one of my husband’s uncles was on the dam half an hour before it failed. Little is known about surviving family members in the Buffalo Creek area, except for an aunt who had been living in Laredo. So many people died that day and many more live with the memories.
I would like to see this one day. It is mountainous and built like the countryside in St Kitts.
I like mountains and winding roads. I was born in a very hilly place and I also lived in a hilly place in the countryside.

I would never be offended to be called a hillbilly! We are some of the friendliest people on earth 😉
I totally agree with you! These folks would give you there last sip of water

My mind is blown by how much most of these West Virginia towns that you show us resemble most of the West Coast and northern half of the South Island of New Zealand. Man here gave me big Picton and Greymouth vibes. The Tasman sea crashing into the towns (with a fair bit of violence tbh) is the only huge notable difference at first glance.

thank you so much, I went to Chicago for the first time a couple of years ago.
Nice you shared your experience honestly
Yes, it is a matter of what I call "poetic" way some people look and dream of these places, completely turning the blind eye to the fact that there is a reason why people leave these places. I like these places, but only to an explorer level, yes they are beautiful. Will I settle in a place like this? Maybe.
I even came up with my own joke, "One of these days I am gonna leave the city, take a couple thousand $$$ with me and buy a house (for a couple thousand bucks) in an abandoned coal mine somewhere in WV and stay there till my last day"
"I have never been so sad and depressed"

The old health center was the Miner's Hospital which was originally built and maintained with funding by local citizens and the UMWA. It ultimately closed in 2001 and the majority of the main hospital structure was demolished in 2012 with the medical office annex remaining standing as you saw it.
I was born in Man hospital 1958.
So sad 😢
I’ve been there. I was driving through the state on back roads, and went there purposely because of the name! It’s like everywhere else in WV, a lot of struggles, people have left, but good people stay on. Scenery is beautiful. I stopped and mailed my rent check to NY. In Mingo County, I got pulled over by the police for “looking like I was lost.” Every year I go this happens in rural areas in the south. It’s because NY tags make me suspect. They think I’m there for drugs, firearms, or sometimes fireworks. I’ve never once been ticketed or charged with anything.
Hail to the Empire State..
I hate that, being pulled over just because your tags are out of state. It’s harassment. I am a woman who travels alone. Cop or not, I don’t want to give you my what all. You are a man I don’t know in a place I am unfamiliar with, and I don’t warrant your attention.

Thank you for this video…I plan on going to West Virginia at some point in the future. I feel the people there are so genuine, humble and kind…. The ones I have met….it is such a beautiful state. 🙏💯
I love west Virginia, especially southern west Virginia.
Why?
Thanks for uploading. Man is my BF's hometown. He just loved this video! We appreciate u creating & uploading. Best wishes! ❤️
Awesome! Thank you!
Another beautiful small town in West Virginia.
I believe that I have been there. I love WV, most beautiful State we have.
Born and raised in the Ozark mountains . My family came from the smoky mountains . Proud of my heritage.
Neat video. Thanks for sharing these. I enjoy them!
Thanks for watching and the comment
I'm Australian but I am proud to know a distant relo is an early settler of Hancock, West Virginia. Seems a beautiful State.
Living in a large city like I do, I can't even imagine living in a small town like that...and I know they could never imagine living in a big city
This is a cool Video of Logan County, W.VA. My Dad was born n raised in Logan. I always loved taking trips from where we lived, in MI to go visit Granny n to look around at different places there. I miss going there. Great memories, though!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
So interesting. I'm from WI, always wanted to see Virginia and West Virginia, Thank You !
I have only been to WI but I imagine it is entirely different based on what I saw then. Pretty cool to know life can be so different yet we can appreciate each other's lives.
They are currently paying people to move here.
@@MrsMargaret Why?
@@fyt00000 to boost the population. We lost a Senate seat.
@@MrsMargaret Oh ok thanks
What an excellent presentation you have. Calm. My roots SW PA. Close to WVA. My dad,was coal miner 1930s-1960 mines closed we had to go to cleveland as did many WVA. WVA people are very strong and have lived thru so much. Survivors. 1st day when i started elementary school in Cleveland 1963 kids called me "hillbilly". I asked my mom "am i a hillbilly"? She said for me to tell them....YES I'M A HILLBILLY AND PROUD OF IT! Good girl helping you out that's nice, so cute..looks like you. God bless WVA and God bless America
We just moved here in WV 2 months ago from LA.. And I loved WV❤️ weather was soooo cool and love the nature too❤️
My mom is from New Orleans, dad was from Belle, WV
@@andrelopez7589 lol its already turning into one.
When ppl move to WV! You know shits gettinv real out there
Hopefully none of the political aspects of it followed you here lol
Keep ur lefty bull crap back in Cali don't ruin WV like you did cali
I'v never been there but now I feel a real connection to the place 🇬🇧🇺🇸🇬🇧🇺🇸🇬🇧🇺🇸
Looks like a nice little town. I live in a smaller place in Saltville Virginia. I’m very proud to be raising my family in such a small town. It beats any bigger town any day. 🇺🇸
I love Saltville
It won't be a small town if you keep advertising it online. Swarms of ignorant and pompous city brats took notice to my area over a decade ago. It's no longer a small town. Housing has destroyed so many beautiful acres of woods...
I was raised in Man WV but have lived in Michigan for 50 years but Man will always be my home and yes some of the best people you will ever meet just don’t piss them off🤠
I have always lived in West Virginia but have only been to Man once. Getting there was a long and arduous trip.
ain't no good way to get there lol
My pop's side of my family comes from West Virginia. I have been there a few times, I never had good contact with my relatives. I miss them with all of my heart.
Beautiful mountains❤️ I grew up in a very small town in Southwestern Ontario, Canada.
It is called Tilbury. Due to the many farming families/blue collar workers who live there, people there were called, ‘Till-billies’! Lol
Great nickname 🤣
In the North there are Northern versions of the Southern Rednecks.
I think they are called Podunkers.
There is a nation of Native Americans called Podunks I head not sure.
I love West Virginia, born there in the sticks. It will forever be my home.
Thanks for Mansplaining this to us!
dear God, that was good...why didn't I think of that one lol
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for your video. I enjoyed it. Your daughter is a darling. Bless her heart.
That's where all of my dad's side of the family lives. ❤
Thanks for the video. A lot of my wife's family live in Man. You drove right past her aunts house. Beautiful small town.
People can call themselves hillbilly. It can be a description without being an insult.
Why would you even make fun of someone's accent it's mean as hell jesus
Vickie did you not look at the intro? They are Proud to be called Hillbillies.
Love watching your video seeing other town in WVa I'm from Weston WVa live here all my life never been anywhere else that's why I love your videos
Man, Should have drove another 5-10 more miles up to west Logan and got ya some Chili Dawgs from Morrison's Drive Inn!!
I wish you didnt mention those so close to lunchtime lol. I had some of those about 5 years ago and still remember how good they were. Cant eat just one.
Yes the best hotdogs. My sister , cousin, daughter and I drove from Dayton Ohio to Logan just the have some hot dogs. The best
Morrison's is not in West Logan they're in Stollings
And the cheeseburgers on toast! Morrison's onion rings are the ones that all other onion rings are compared to, and I've never found any better.
You got that right! I used to work ambulance, and sometimes managed to stop there just for a couple of their great chili dawgs. Now I'm going to have to get back to Morrison's again. It's been years.
At 5.57 that white house with the carport used to be my papa Louis house. And the brick building next to it was whites metalwork owned by him and my uncles if I remember right. I spent my childhood summers there. I was born and raised in Los Angeles and now live in Georgia. I am 42 now so that was many years ago. But this brought back a lot of memories so thank you for making this.
what was papa louis last name
@@sandykennedy582 it was Paluso.
Man... I sure enjoyed that video
Thank you, I knew someone could work in another pun lol
I met a guy in the back holler of Alkol in 1995, visited off and on for about 10 years,,havent been back in 15 years..I miss it
Born & raised in Chas.West Virginia & love it.
That little girl is cute as ever!
My daughter and I walked around thru a little old WV town on the Gauley River a few yrs ago while on vaca.
Really liked it.
If I ever had a chance to live in the USA, this is the kind of place I would chose. A small community in a stunningly beautiful part of the country.
Me as well, 🇨🇦
that title had me rolling..😂😂😂
"and a Few women"..lol
To be honest, West Virginia has a very beautiful nature life and gorgeous scenery views to inspire alot of people to see on their vacations to capture the beauty of the moments in the mountains.
My husband was born and raise there.
that new Huge bridge was built and I remember when they done it Before it was very scary driving around the mountain side before the bridge got built. Should have went to Bruno and cross the one bridge it’s only in and out incredible to see this!! There’s a place not too far from there called Slabtown if you don’t live there don’t go there 👀. I remember when the first Walmart came in there !! Over the mountain
Cheers💫
