    The great thing about fuji’s not-quite medium format sensor size is that Sigmas Art series as well as a number of other high end full frame lenses cover the sensor area with minimal vignetteing.
    Edit: Nikkor lenses appear vignette-resistant as well, so I hear.

      Yes! I use the Sigma 105 F1.4 at full sensor with virtually no vignetting on my GFX 100 ii! I highly recommend using a Fringer adapter, it performs so well.

      @@AdventuresinNature Does the 105mm lose AF capability on GFX 100 ii?

    • @AdventuresinNature
      @AdventuresinNature 5 місяців тому +5

      @@Jawad.1 it does not, but tracking AF capability is definitely poor. I have found single point AF with focus checking to bring out the best of it. It seems to hit focus 8/10 times, and if I'm lower than f2.5,I'll manually adjust it to perfectly get the eye in focus. I find the GFX 100 ii manual focus checking to be so very quick and easy to use with the huge and clear EVF and 102 mp to zoom in on. The image quality is absolutely outstanding and perhaps the best portrait lens for the GFX system if you have right expectations for AF and can handle the weight.

    AN OVERSIZED FULL FRAME SENSOR FOR 35MM SLR LENSES!! For those of us who have dreamed of having an oversized sensor to utilize almost all of what 35mm SLR lenses see - with an adapter, it's a blast to be able to shoot square and 65/24 without any vignetting. Having been stuck in 3:2 has been such a pain. We're now FREE!

    • @Kliffot
      @Kliffot 5 місяців тому +2

      Indeed that's really a huge plus for the GFX system, i'm just not sure if many people are yet aware of that possibility.

    • @jefffenske1958
      @jefffenske1958 5 місяців тому +3

      @@Kliffot The GFX cameras also have a 35mm crop mode in which 35mm SLR lenses are used just as they are on a full frame SLR; though, I've never used it. Instead, I use their various crop modes of the full sensor to help composition, which capture the full 4:3 sensor, so the final crop can be determined in post.
      The sensor is 44 mm wide by 33 mm high, compared to 36 by 24 for full frame. If we want to shoot square in a full frame, the largest is 24 by 24mm, so much of what the lens sees can't be used, and the field of view is shrunken. With the GFX MF sensor, the 35mm lens' entire image circle is used to create 33 by 33mm 1:1 images, which is very helpful when shooting wide; though, most of the extreme wide angle lenses have petal hoods that get in the way. I had mine sawed off by a local camera repairman.
      So we can now we're not stuck in 3:2 when shooting astro or anything wide angle.
      Most 35mm SLR lenses will heavily vignette in the corners when using the entire MF sensor, but any aspect ratios can be chosen later in post.
      The problem is composition without knowing exactly where the edges are. Fuji's crop modes can help, but it would be great if they offered more that would work specifically with 35mm lenses' image circle, for those of us who want to shoot in aspect ratios other than 3:2, and use the entire (or nearly the entire) image circle to do so.
      It's pure joy for me not to be stuck in 3:2 anymore, but Fuji could make it more user friendly for those who want a simpler process, like the Panasonic multi-aspect ratio cameras had.
      If Fuji would provide another complete set of crop modes for 35mm lenses, that would be great! Now they offer large, medium and small. 35mm would be somewhere in-between large and medium.
      Though large already works perfectly in 1:1 and 65:24 with full frame lenses - no vignetting.
      Being able to use all lenses in the often magnificent 65:24 pano aspect ratio, being able to accurately view and compose this in the viewfinder or lcd is a dream!
      The Fringer full frame to medium format adapter works well, and has a rubber gasket on it.
      This camera is a Godsend - opens up creativity massively. And if we already have SLR glass anyway, many of us won't need to buy a lot of medium format lenses.

    Wow. This camera can produce some stunning images and it's gratifying to see it in the hands of someone with the talent to capture them. First time in a long time I've seen a new camera and been this impressed, the dynamic range and colours are gorgeous.
    I love bokeh photography - the challenge level of contrasting soft blur with maximum focus on the subject makes the times where I succeed super satisfying, and it seems like this Fuji opens the door to more of that.
    Great video. ❤

    I have the GFX 100, 100s, 100II and all but two of the GF lenses. I have shot and posted on Flickr thousands full size jpegs for free if you want to see some GFX IQ. I like GFX because the image fidelity surpasses anything out there (well, GFX and Hassy do). I've never shot a second of video on any of the GFX gear. This review is extremely well done. I like the in-hand camera views and functions that are all the way through the video. Good synopsis of the strengths and weaknesses of GFX. You are correct when you said "Narrower than ever DOF." That is one of the biggest things about shooting GFX compared to FF or APSC. There is a lot less DOF. That can hurt you or help you. I often shoot landscapes at F11, moving into a bit of diffraction vs having a bunch of near or far OOF pixels whereas with my FF system I would shoot at F8 or wider. Fuji X (APSC)? The DOF just goes on forever.

    • @stevelink3
      @stevelink3 4 місяці тому

      Excellent comments greg! As a landscape and product photographer currently using the Nikon Z8 and a few superb Nikkor S lenses, I am researching MF (especially this GFX 100 ll), but am concerned about the comparative lack of DOF at a given aperture. I shoot generally f/8-f/13 on the Z8, with superb sharpness from foreground to background, with little diffraction effects. So, would I have a problem achieving foreground/infinity sharpness when shooting the GFX 100 ll tripod-mounted and focusing at hyperfocal distance? Or, would I need to employ focus stacking? Thank you!

    I think Fujis decision not to opt for a flip out screen was wise. At the end of the day I do not believe this is meant for selfie vlogging (where the flip out screen is useful), it is meant for photography first and video making (not vlogging) second, so the flip out screen is not really required. There are many other cameras more suited for selfie style vlogging that wouldn't give you arms like Arnold after a short period. :) Happy new year Chris and always enjoy your reviews. Great review! I love my GFX 100S and won't upgrade to this one, but yeah, with the lenses it weighs a ton. I tend to just pick one to take along. (Usually the wrong one!) The 50mm is a great lens, much lighter and more compact than the 32-64 which is wonderful, but a bit of a brick. The 100-200 is surprisingly light for its size, but it's huge so that doesn't mean much!

    I use a GFX daily, it’s really hard to use anything else. If you don’t need high speed or small files it’s a beautiful thing. I’ve shot weddings, tons of portraits, and lots of product work and it’s a phenomenal system. My favorite thing is the sensor ratio. It makes it so easy to have tons of useful crops. With full frame I always had to chop so much off the top and bottom for social posting, print placements, etc. the older 50mp models while slow are amazing for casual or deliberate shooting if this one is too expensive or overkill for some.

In your opinion, if you were a 100% stills only, landscape, and small product photographer, which MF system do you think would work best (Hasselblad X2D or Fujifilm GFX 100 II), emphasis on lens sharpness and detail rendition, assuming one shoots 100% tripod-mounted, and 10 second self timer for optimum sharpness? (For wildlife. I use a Nikon Z8 with the NIkkor Z 180-600 f/5.6-6.3, so I'm not necessarily seeking "speed" in a potential MF System.) Thank you sir!

I think it would be better if Chris reviewed camera ISO performance by always zooming in the same amount on the picture instead of zooming down to 1:1 pixel level. That's how the DPReview test scene works, and it gives a more honest view of how it will actually work out.

      @@Kliffot Well, someone (Sony) would have to make one first, and I'm not aware of anything like this being on the horizon. Plus, with full frame sensors now at 60 MP, and presumably a little further still to go, the market for 50 MP 33x44 is probably not exactly expanding. I mean, there's a reason Fuji sold more 100S bodies than all previous models put together, despite the higher price.

    When I see the video performance of the GFX, I cannot comprehend Fujifilm's marketing strategy. I fail to understand why the medium format has the most advanced video capabilities in the Fujifilm system, including squeeze recovery, when theoretically, APS-C format would be more suitable for video shooting. Does a higher price necessarily equate to more performance? I remain skeptical.
