I moved around a lot when I was younger, but Harvey is what I consider home. 157th & Wood. We moved over there in 1997. I wasn't in the streets or anything. I just hooped at the Lincoln Park Courts. Back in the day, those courts used to be the spot in the summertime. I used to hoop at the Y too in downtown Harvey.
My stomping grounds were 159th. Always at Wasso's. Always at the Mobile. I think Black got killed at the Walgreens on 159th & Wood. They threw a memorial picnic at the courts and I remember some shit jumpin' off at the picnic!
In those days, my block was the hood...but it also was a community. There was family. I left for the Marines in 2002, came back in 2007, and most of the houses on my block were abandoned. Harvey has always been the hood for as long as I can remember, but now it just feels lifeless and dead.
Shout out to everyone outta HarveyWorld. It's a big ass part of who I am.

Harvey world baby!! You forgot about Marcy son!! Marshfield, 157th!! Y'all was kids when it all started, Melvin was my best friend in grade school, we got pictures with the same shirts on!! Ingalls saved my life and my friends plenty of times because of the location!! My great grandfather worked at Wyman Gordon, my grandfather was the first black Mobile One owner in Illinois, my grandmother started Parents to Soon right there on 154th!! We had parades every holiday, and kids competed for spots in the parades with their go-karts, four wheelers, and mini bikes!! White's didn't like blacks moving there so they practiced white flight!! The businesses decided to leave and the money started disappearing!! When the owner of Dixie Square Mall decided to leave he let the blue's brothers destroy the mall for money and left with the money!! My father worked at the radio shack in the movie and my uncle worked at jewels!! Most of those businesses moved to Homewood, dolton and surrounding cities were the white people moved to!! The first gang's that came from the city were the El rokens, and GD's!! The generation you're talking to doesn't know the pride of Harvey only the slime world!!! I've been through everything you can think of growing up there and have also made it out and still have family there!! My family has served the people of Harvey and helped when we can and as much as we can!! The mayor Cris Clark used to be on the block too so don't get it twisted!!!! And there's another life you can live there by going to school and doing what you are supposed to do, but most don't know it!!!! Most of my family dealt with the streets and the people and have been on the streets, but they all also have great education and degrees!!
