Tamron 70-180mm also has the BBAR G2 coatings verses G1 on the Tammy (Slight difference). If you look at photographyblog's sharpness tests, the 70-300mm is behind about a stop on the wide end and 1.5-2 stops around 200mm on the long end in terms of sharpness when reaching excellent levels, but the fact that it gets there, offers 120mm more reach and is less than half the price- pretty amazing. I bought the 70-300mm and it's the best 70-300mm I've ever owned. It should probably come down to application. If you are focused more on portraits and indoor shots, get the 70-180mm. If you want the Tamron swiss army knife that can cover portraits and other daytime activities in modest light, get the 70-300mm. If you have the budget, I could see owning both as well. Cheers.
Tamron 70-300 rxd is definitely a beast consider the size, weight and price. The optical performance is almost identical with the Bigma 100-400 dg dn lens on my A73. This Tammy peforms way better than my expectation and I'd not be hesitate to recommend it to my friends if you don't pursue the best of the best tele zooms.
I have the 70-300 and it’s very good for the last years with my a7c. You cannot be wrong with this lens. Today there is the 50-300 but i like this 70-300 reliable fast sharp and light, so light..and i like the contrasted photo i get with it. Ibis work well with the 70-300. This lens is well above its price range to my opinion.
I have the Tamron 70-180 F2.8. Love it for portrait photography. I have a Sigma 100-400 for the extra reach. This is the perfect combo for me and combined witht he 17-28 and 28-75 Tamrons which I also have I think I'm covered on lenses for a while.
Have u test the 70-180 in crop mode in your Sony A7riii? That should give u a really good reach at 2.8 I am planning to purchase this one but I am not sure if it is enough for birds or wildlife
@@TheThinFrame I use the crop mode quite often but still wasn't enough reach for bird photography for me so picked up the Sigma 100-400. That in crop mode gives about 600mm so much better
was really considering these two lenses for my a6000 as well as the tamron 28-200mm for long distance landscapes but purchased the sony 70-350mm instead with stabilization. I hope that was the right move! LOL.

I am thinking about a first „longer” zoom for my apsc Sony and was considering the Sony 70-200 f/4, this 70-180/2.8 from Tamron as well as their 70-300. Do you think the darker 70-300’s reach can be compensated by cropping into an image at 180/2.8 which would certainly be cleaner at 100% as the ISO would need to be lower to get the same exposure? I know in most cases nothing beats an optical zoom but I imagine the noise might make it not worth it if it isn’t for shooting on a perfectly sunny day 🤔 I mainly shoot portraits but wanted to try photographing some birds and planes for quite some time. I think the 70-180 might serve me a bit better in my portraits work as well but then again there is that reach of the 300 and I am struggling a bit with choosing one over the other. At 300mm though I think even f/5.6 might do it for a blurry background but don’t really know for sure since the longest one I have is a 56mm 😉 Also, having these two as options, what do you think about the Sony f/4? Should I maybe still consider it over the others? There is something about that „zebra” for me 😆 Anyway, thanks for your reply and keep on the good work mate!
In 2024 Tamron has really Nice lenses the 70-300 excellent cheap and sharp and light, 70-180 g2 f2.8 very good, fast for sport, 50-300 and 50-400 half macro at 50 and improved features and range. They are rocking.
Tamron 70-300mm is considered cheap but the performance/sharpness is amazing despite no OS. Am still considering to trade my sigma 100-400mm mainly due to the weight & IMO tamron 100-300mm is sharper
What a dilema! I'm between the Tamron 70-180mm f2.8 and the Sony 70-200mm f4. I might go for Tamron because of its aperture and light weight. However if I could have the extra money I would rather get the 135mm gm and the 100-400mm sony lens! Haha well one step at a time.

what about stabalization? Does it matter

Well i think 180 is enough. I think if you use the 300mm, the imagine quality will be worse

Is it safe to safe that in well-lit situations both of them are equally sharp?
70-180 is the sharper lens hands down. Light won't effect a lenses sharpness for the most part.
