This podcast was so helpful. I didn't want it to end. I'm requesting a part 2 with you two. Thanks Cas - Not sure if you know how much calm & love you bring to the world. You the bomb man! 💙
Asked adult kids what they wanted for Christmas dinner one year. Everyone of them, individually asked, responded "pizza would be awesome" 😮 I was the only one that felt like something was missing....everyone else was delighted that year and had the best time together we've ever had. Tradition is good, but sometimes just having that laid back holiday can be more meaningful. It was a lesson learned. 😊
Last year after Thanksgiving, I gave each of my sons a blank Christmas card to give to each member, writing inside a "service gift" for that person instead of buying presents. I asked them to really notice what may be of help to that person that they can do. Christmas Day, everyone put their cards under the tree and later we opened them and read them aloud. The results were so touching, we'll never forget it!
That is awesome. My adult son gets me "car wash" tickets. He takes my car and washes it. It may be only driving it through the car wash but I love it. I'm requesting more this year. :)
This is an awesome idea. When my kids were little they did this on their own and would give gifts like a lawn mowing gift card where it entitled their dad to having the lawn done ten times.
My friends and I are in our early 30’s. I’ve stopped dying and bleaching my hair and was shocked at the gray hairs I’m getting. Thankfully when I pointed it out every single person said, “no worries, I have them too.” Thank God! I’m not alone. This current obsession with anti aging is so toxic. Even children are using anti aging products that can actively hurt their skin because it’s not designed for them. Hopefully the social pendulum swings the other way and we embrace age in a good way.
The comment about writing down gratitude for what you already have before buying really resonated with me ❤❤❤. It really is a healthy way to live! If my sister has a problem she just starts saying, “Thank you Jesus”. It may seem weird but I can say thank you that I am not alone, God is with me, when going through something hard, etc.
I needed this. I am always buying stuff to feel like "love" and "beautiful". Cozy blankets, socks, sheets, sparkly jewelry or anything with bling. I am single and all alone and never felt true love. I feel invisible although I am overweight and far from it.
Love all your ideas. We do the soup on Sundays now we're in our 70s. When my children were teenagers and I was working, I invented 'Fend for yourself Fridays'. They had to eat leftovers or make themselves dinner. They knew I wasn't going to cook for them.
I love ‘declutter your false belief’ as the root to declutter. I have the same category as Katy talked about. With me it’s make up. I’ve declutter my entire house and I live minimalish but when it comes to make up I keep buying and I don’t know why. Looking for better products I don’t know. So note to self ‘my selfworth does not come from my make up and how I look’. 100% love this👌🏻Thank you Cas & Katy
This was a great help in actually stopping to think about why I shop for the things that I do. I have to shop from home, so when I need something or think I want something, I usually put it in my "cart" and think it over for a few hours or days. Then if I still feel I need it (or want it), and if it is still available, I'll then buy it. If it's gone, then I really didn't need it!!! I love your talk about simplifying and enjoying Christmas more! This is exactly what our family has been doing for years! We ALL enjoy our Christmas get togethers now more than ever!!!
The pain of decluttering doesn’t stop me from wantonly buying more crap. If anything, it makes it worse, because I think, “I’ve cleared out so much stuff, now I can buy NEW stuff, and I’m going to get the RIGHT stuff THIS time. THIS time, I’m going to buy things I’m really going to use. Really!!!” I’ve done that so many times over the years and I haven’t figured out how to make myself stop. A big part of my problem is that decluttering doesn’t seem to make me feel better, it makes me feel anxious and deprived, even though I was desperate to purge stuff because I was drowning and suffocating under mountains of things. I’ve redone the drastic purging (with professional organizers) so many times in my life, I’m starting to feel like I’m a lost cause. I know my hoarding was triggered by repeated grief and PTSD, but I haven’t been able to get out from under it.
You are on the right track by trying to purge and declutter the emotions! Memories of growing up poor, feeling deprived, and "unworthy" of things can really stick with you throughout LIFE! I liked what they said here about focusing on gratitude for what you have. But even having "nice things" can still feel empty inside if deep down you don't feel like you deserve them. ((HUGS)) YOU ARE VALUABLE AND ALWAYS HAVE BEEN! 🥰
I LOVE this idea of a gratitude garland.. I am absolutely starting this tradition immediately!! I'm going to get everyone to write out 3 things at Thanksgiving and use that to decorate for the whole season.. then I'm going to do one a day with the kids each day of December up to Christmas.. I love this!! 🫶🏻
I LOVE the idea of decluttering traditions. There are things I used to enjoy that no longer serve a purpose, so I'm going to open myself to new experiences.
I learned that I can appreciate something without having to own it. Like going to an art museum. You can appreciate the art but know from the start you can't buy it.
I am learning and appreciating this more every year! I can appreciate a cute knicknack without buying it. I can appreciate someone else’s yard plantings and decor without owning them.
This is a very thoughtful way of approaching this problem! I love visiting stately homes (I’m in the UK and we have quite a few!) but I don’t want to live in a 200 room palace. I need to learn not to envy someone’s 3000 feet house (which to us is a very large house).
Best podcast interview so far. This was amazing and life changing. These two need a collab channel or something because they bring out the best in each other!
No tree for our family anymore! Each family member has an artificial garland pre-strung with lights and hung with favorite ornaments. We unwind each garland out of its tote, hang it over a window, and wind it back into the tote at the end of the season. No more individually wrapping ornaments for storage (except for a few very fragile ones) which was SO time consuming and I dreaded doing -- and therefore usually didn't do until February 😆! Also, each (immediate) family member gets $100 that I transfer at the beginning of November (so as to take advantage of sales) to spend on a gift for themselves. On Christmas, everyone gets a few goodies in a stocking and we bring what we each chose with our $100 for 'show and tell.' No more wrapping, no more unwanted gifts.
I have been thinking about not putting out every collection of decor for Christmas this year for the first time after living with less ! How could I not put out my Christmas village or Santa craziness mantle😮😂 I just want the tree and stockings and live greens ……. Then there’s the look in my youngest granddaughters eyes i won’t see when she gets to see it. What do I do Cass!!!!!
I have skipped putting out different collections through the years & found that most everyone either didn't miss it or enjoyed the other Christmas decor that was overlooked. Then when I put it out the following year or even in two years, it seems admired that much more because it hasn't been seen. I'm also considering passing on a few collections to family members who I know will enjoy it through the years. Oh & I have also only put out parts of collections like a small part of a Christmas village. Less stressful.
We use Sekret Santa on line! It is perfect 👌 One gift to one of the people you celebrate Christmas with. Then you can afford to buy something with good quality that that person wants ❤️❤️❤️
I don't care that the things I need to get out of my house end up in the landfill. So little people realize that these things are going to end up there anyway. It doesn't matter if its when you do it, or it will end up there after your passing Don't let junk stop you from living
Cas, you are amazing, be yourself and react to this beautiful woman, as beautiful as you are! She is good and you have grounded us since Covid! I really enjoy you, your tips, but mainly your connection with all us “Nutcrackers” 😂
When I was a young mother a group of friends wanted to get together to decorate Christmas cookies and them bring them to a local prison. I fussed all day trying to make these perfect cutout sugar cookies. I was so crabby after the whole process. When I made it to the get together that evening, I discovered everyone had bought theirs!!! It was the last time I made cutout cookies!
I am from Sweden and we have Smorgasbord as tradition but it is a huge deal with home made meatball, gravlax, eggs and sill etc. But we all pull together and do different parts of it and I would not want to stop making my meatballs!!
There are so many living in hotels that I have taken things over and sort of see a family with children and offer things too The special-needs kids were at one of the schools in Stafford County doing a project with cookbooks while listening to cast on another video over the weekend just this past weekend I Decluttered my cookbooks and donated 27 to the school. It was the best.
Great discussion! I have a long way to go in the decluttering process, but I have definitely noticed a mind shift when I enter stores this time of year. I enjoy some of it but also feel overwhelmed and a little sad at how much clutter it represents. Making better choices - thanks!❤
oh yeah buying because everything feels out of control🙋♀. And I have an electrical cooker in my online shopping cart. Why on earth do I NEED that???? I'm figuring it out it's in there for weeks. Also a fruit dryer is in there😂😂😂 ideal for winter😂😂😂😂, but that's on my wish list for years now. I'm gonna wait until I know my why. Thank you
If that won’t be around again is my Achilles Heel! I travel a lot and I often left things thinking next year I can get it. It has never happened and some things I still regret not buying 20 years ago. But where do you draw the line? I am mostly a minimalist but not in arkitecture & style where I hate it! I loove letting desteny, no planning in avancemang, just take me to places when I travel and love that. So I have started to try and say to myself ”If that thing is here when I return it is meant to be mine” that works great! But lots of places I do not come back to…
I put so much stuff in my “save for later” that dies there. I’ll make a $300 cart then wait. Eventually when I have money to burn I’ll look back and not want most of it.
All I can say is wow.. you know.. the part of her house being the landfill.. Well I guess great minds think alike right :) I've been telling people that for decades..
Oh, man, those giant nutcrackers...i have no issues denying them until i see the ones painted to look like they're solid wood! 😂 Such a great conversation! ❤
When it comes to decoration? Why not intentionally buy stuff for 3 years for all seasons and after 3 years donate it with intention and then buy new stuff. Then it doesn’t get boring but isn’t as extreme as changing it every year. Or buying really good stuff in high quality and sticking to it

I don’t think she realizes! Good comment for our “Guru”❤

We had tacos a couple years ago and it was all of favourite!

I always say my silver hairs are the source of my magic powers!
So true. Our culture it waaaaay too youth oriented.
I was secretly giddy when I found my first sparkling silver hair 😍

Also thank you we have clean water (when the hot water heater goes bust!)

Love it, thank you. This will help many people.

I'm already a minimalist and your story made me want to throw away my whole house! 😭 I also cried! 😭 thank you for sharing!
Woohoo!! Cass time!! 🥰🥰🥰
Oooh great conversation! 20:17 and I can't wait to the end to comment :D "death by 100 cuts"!!! Amazing! Thank you Cas for the guest!

When it comes to decoration? Why not intentionally buy stuff for 3 years for all seasons and after 3 years donate it with intention and then buy new stuff. Then it doesn’t get boring but isn’t as extreme as changing it every year.
Or buying really good stuff in high quality and sticking to it
Think of the money you will spend on that decor and donate to a charity or family instead.
Great conversation, ladies. XG Ire
