- We all know the legendary Back In Black solo by Angus Young...
But what if it was played by someone else? Me, Phil X and a special guest explore our own takes on the Back in Black Solo.

Thank you Rick & Phil for having me! 🙏🎸❤️
Absolutely incredible fretless work! Really smooth melding of Angus's style with yours!
I love that vibrato effect you get sliding upwards, example between 06:40 and 06:45 in the video. Is that a quirk of playing with a fretless guitar?
@@ryanfaulkner2839 it’s a sound particular to fretless, dragging pinched harmonics… 👍🎸
Dude that was awesome. Smooth as butter!
That was amazing! Any chance we will get to see Sons of Apollo touring here in the US soon?…🤘😉
Bumblefoot KILLED IT! Sounded like him AND Angus.
The other two are good, but I'm pretty sure I'd like his better than the original if I heard all four for the first time.
Agree. Hate to pick a favorite but Bumblefoots effort seemed like 50% Angus/50%Bumblefoot. Was just so sweet. Loved Phils and Ricks solo's as well and loved Phils enthusiasm and Ricks laugh. Great video.
For the next one, how about “While my Guitar Gently Weeps” where instead of Eric Clapton, the Beatles called in Jimmy Page, David Gilmour, or Jimi Hendrix to play the solo? Great video by the way!
You've got my upvote. That would be amazing. And another suggestion for the solo style might be... George Harrison.
AWESOME idea.
I was the 100th liker of the comment! This means it must be done!
I love your choice of guitarists! Great idea!
Phil X seems such a genuine bloke as well as awesome guitarist and bumblefoot was so good.
This was awesome! My wife walked in while I was watching this and asked, “why does Anthony Bourdain have so many Marshall amps? I didn’t know he could play guitar too!”
Ha ha..
😂
Hhahahhahhhh!!!
Oof I see you don't have the heart to tell her what happened...
Phil's personality is as good as his playing. Great dude. His solo ripped on this.
What a cool dude, right? I wanna have a beer with him.
I saw him play with Bon Jovi this year. He's got to be one of the best players I've ever seen.
All 3 solos were amazing but Phil’s solo was absolutely S tier. What a legend.
As an Aussie who grew up with AC/DC I enjoyed this video. In my younger years they recorded the film clip to Jailbreak just around the corner with Bon Scott and they even played at a local school. AC/DC is a massive slice of Australian rock history. Thank you for bringing something extraordinary and special to a much loved Aussie band. Extremely well done guys. 😎
100% agree Steven!. AC/DC loved playing at local schools whenever they could!
Man.. Bumblefoot's mastering on the fretless is mind blowing. Also 100% agree that you cannot get Angus version out of your mind. It is engraved deep in our mind.
So true, my mind was playing Angus’s solo over theirs. It’s simply iconic.
I didn't even know fretless guitars, other than bass, existed
i got the impression MISCOMMUNICATION happened, cuz it seems like Bumblefoot mostly just played ANgus' solo, but on fretless.......when Rick's request was do YOUR OWN solo, but in the STYLE of Angus......using the fretless.
Reimagining Comfortably numb's solos. ✨
That may be a sin, lol
Impossible
Phil killed it, really liked the sound and feel of his solo‼️ This was soooo much fun video to watch.
Am officially now a Phil X fan. Sincere, humble, funny, self deprecating, honest and entertaining. Been a Ron THal fan a long time and Rick fan about 4 years.
This was a tough one because Angus's solo is so engrained in everyone's soul. You can hear each of you trying not to play the original solo.
All played well. BumbleFoot was as if Angus was playing LIVE.
Exactly! Bumblefoot’s solo was the closest to Angus… in the beginning.. but then he went..OFF..!!👍🏼
@@robertakerman3570 lol when has Angus ever played his solos exactly as on the album?
Same with Slash.
They like variation and not 30-40 yrs playing the...same...thing...
@@bobbafett1849 And it's harder to play the recorded solos while you're dancing. Angus' live versions of his solos are usually not as good.
Thinking the EXACT same thing.
Man bumblefoot went hard on this one. What a legend.
How in the world did he play those highest notes? Many solos I've heard only get up to E6, but this one got up to A6. How?
late af reply so you probably already know, but he has a thimble on his pinky that he uses to tap notes higher that the fret board. Crazy hard to get the notes accurate and he makes it look easy @@DJIncendration
@@MrJimmyjazz666 I actually didn't know. Thank you for telling me, even if it seems late.
Rick, please keep doing this. This is a GREAT series!!
As always, y'all crushed it! I love seeing these reimagined solos. It really shows how the original guitarist thought through his solo. And it shows how each of you think through the solo. Especially when. You discussed it afterwards.
Just proves how perfect Angus's solo is, you can literally hum the whole solo right along with song. So jarring to hear something else being played, my ears could not make sense of it. The fretless solo was pretty great though.
Totally agree, everything they're playing sounds great as always but somehow sounds so wrong at the same time.
Me thinks my 15 year old has to explore fretless. He did some violin training so this should be an extreme;y diffiult transition for him...haha...time to get his old Bow out and start horse whipping him with it!
Makes me want to try a play a fretless.
@@williamwilliam728 well it is father's day weekend! 🤣
This just shows 2 things: 1) you are all amazing musicians, 2) you are willing to learn and be humbled!! Amazing work guys, really loved this. Get Tim Pearce to do one of these too!!
And 3) doesn't sound like Angus at all.
@@OzWannabe Style of Angus was the project.
Pete Thorn would be a great guest too.
All three solos are examples of perfection! Bravo!!!!!
This production was so fun to watch, guys! I honestly cannot wait for the next one to be released. :) You three totally made my day! Thank you 🙏🏼
I love how Bumblefoot was sliding into the notes. It was the most like the original but he added to it. All three were amazing!!
I cannot believe Ron Thal plays a fretless guitar, his intonation is impeccable
Phil's chromatic part at the end was just magic!
I got chills from that
Rick, you had me shouting, "Oooohhhh!" at 04:36 - love that layed back, string skipping, ascension lick!
The EVH solo from Beat It would be the best to reimagine. Lots of room in a classic pop song to get crazy.
Great suggestion!
@@caprise-music6722 Yea, that one also. I always chuckle when I remember Eddie just took the studio fee. He didn't want residuals on that one.
This!
Love this suggestion! It's legendary, but also long enough to give them time to develop something.
Great idea Rick I love these videos!
Sweet Child of Mine might be an interesting challenge for this exercise.
Love the self deprecation and humility from Rick and Phil. Angus’s solo is so iconic and his phrasing is so dynamic it’s really challenging to cover it without sounding derivative.
What a great video …as always! 🤘🏻😁
Superb compilation of minds and fingers. Loved it and shared it. Thank you Rick.
Those high chromatics at the end of Phil X's solo were VERY original and priceless. In addition, the intonations of his playing and his sound knocked it out of the park.
Hold up people, this wasn't a competition, Rick sounded like Rick Young, Phil sounded like Phil Young, and Ron sounded like Bumble Young, that was the point!
Yes. Couldn't have said it better.🤘
Exactly!!!
…….but
Ron 🥇
Phil 🥈
Rick 🥉
Man please, the work of all you guys was excellent. Appreciate the fact that you put these things together.
That solo is so iconic it's difficult to hear a different one over that break. Rick is right when he says Angus's solo is kind of a composition in itself, which is what makes a solo memorable. i love Phil's playing though, very rock, very exuberant. kicks ass.
Bumblefoot is playing in another dimension! I thought "Oh yeah - the Back In Black solo played verbatim but on fretless. That's interesting enough." But then he went full Bumblefoot. Mind blowing.
I have to admit (while I loved all three solos for different reasons) Phil X's solo was the one I personally liked the best. These are fun videos! and I am a drummer, not a guitar player.
yes, phil for sure is amazing.
same here, I think it was the spacing...worked with the strut rhythm better...or something?
I loved it! Not even for the creative departure as much for the enthusiasm and respect you each brought to the video and song. Awesome job by all!!
Love it!!
As always, superior content, great music, killer jams. Keep it coming Rick.
IT'S WEIRDLY AWESOME!
The solos sound off because their are not reaching the spots in our brain and the expectations are constantly subverted, but at the same time they sound funking amazin! Great idea for a video!
Agree, was/is SO hard to remove the original from your mind. I liked Bumblefoots best because it still followed the pattern of what I'm used to I guess but the fretless sounded cool and his own add-ins were spectacular. I liked the last half of Rick's and probably the same of Phil's.
@@marksvideochannel3592 ooooooooooooooooooooo
@@marksvideochannel3592 Agree Bumblefoot was the best because it was closest to the original.
I love how the direct connection to the audience, backed by view counts, drives content creation.
Thank you, Mr. Beato.
Mir fehlen die Worte - sowas von abgefahren...ein Stil neben dem anderen und neben dem Original steht für sich, danke für so viel Inspiration und Freude!
Congratz on the 3 Million Rick! Well deserved 🤘🥳
So much fun! Loved this!!
Fantastic, Rick! I was FULLY expecting the 'special guest' to be Angus Himself. He's a cool bloke; I'll bet he'd revisit this one with you as well.
Oh man, what a great idea! Angus playing a different Angus solo. Brilliant! Hats off to you, sir.
Laughed so hard at this comment. That's the way to really make the UA-cam copyright bots upset! Ha!
That would be cool.
This. Is. Fantastic. Solos all different, all done with killer feel and technique. Love the genuine love for Angus and ACDC flowing through. You guys all rock.
As usual, an awesome experiment, there are tons of classic solos to try, I hope you keep them coming from time to time. Love the idea of using Phil and having a special "guest" third person.
Any of us can jam riffs in a tune but takes creativity to say something unique. Angus is an absolute master at it.
Like Phil said, if it doesn’t say something you’re just another guy in a bar. Kudos to all three players.
I normally don't like when other artists try to "re-interpret" classic solos because it just comes across as the artist doing his own thing in the middle of a classic song. However, I've got to say that you guys killed it here, just like you did on the Stairway video! Every solo was excellent and really did meld Angus' style with each guitarist's soul. Incredibly hard to do, but you pulled it off flawlessly! Great job!
In my younger days, I would agree with you. I would try to play a song exactly, or as close as possible. But now, my thinking is covering a song exactly becomes boring. Where's the creativity to make that song fresh? Be creative while still preserving elements so an audience can recognize and still relate to the song. The other plus is to introduce younger audiences, that doesn't know or even care about the song, become interested and appreciate how music is fluid. One example is where I came across someone on UA-cam turn Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" into sounding like heavy metal, keeping elements where it was still recognizable.
@@xenixpro I agree. Playing stuff exactly like the original (especially solos) makes it redundant.
@@Nghilifa It not only applies to solos. Take Simon Phillips' playing with Toto after Jeff Porcaro died. The essence of every song is there but it's unmistakably Simon. Same with Kenney Jones after Keith Moon died.
I'm a drummer that plays some guitar. When "learning" drum parts I never tried to copy everything note by note. I always became a second drummer with the band or a third if Genesis or Allman Bros. When I learn a guitar part I learn the correct chords and structure but I play my own stamp on it. I'm not Alex Lifeson or Jimmy Page. I'm myself and can only play what comes out of my soul.
The reason I loved this video is because it's their souls, not an imitation.
@@BanBanChi Yeah, rather an emulation.
Fantastically enjoyable! I love these, please do more!
Amazing guys! Love each of your individual inspiration and creativity while keeping Angus's emotion alive
Reimagining the Solo is just brilliant. It's everything I love as a guitarist. I hope you keep evolving the concept into something where viewers can participate as well. Keep rockin!
With due respect to you Rick and Bumble...Phil X nailed it on all counts
The dude with the fretless was amazing!
Awesome job on these guys! So much fun to watch!
That was incredible! I was waiting to hear Bumblefoots explanation. darn. But I enjoyed you two talking about your approaches.
Really enjoyed all, Phil was my favorite. Just love his energy!
LEGENDARY! Please keep doing these!
You guys are true "rockers" at heart! Rick, Phil, well done! Bumblefoot....extreme and amazing, as expected! Great job all!
Awesome! My second favorite video of yours behind the Stairway video!
“Comfortably Numb” and this should be a two part or longer video. TWO SOLOS!!!
Haha when you said “And a third person…” I immediately thought: “Damn, would be cool to see Bumblefoot do this…” 😂😂😂
I was completely the opposite. I thought, no way would Bumblefoot be the man for this, but he proved wrong. He killed it.
When they said Bumblefoot, I thought, never heard of him. That's my bad!
I wanted to see Alex Lifeson do it. That would be different.
Is there a video where Bumblefoot talks about how he got to be so awesome on a fretless? That was crazy good! 😱😎
@@picksalot1 He did guest the “No Guitar is Safe”-podcast a while back!
AWESOME video!!! Maybe the best thing I've heard all year. Thank you!!
I met Ron Thal when he came to my college for a guest lecture. he was such a nice guy, gave me free tickets for his gig that night and even let me play his signature guitar
These reimagining videos are awesome. It’s the “kid” musician inside you coming out to play with the record…At the high school/college party or down at the local bar… best of all it helps define you (your sound/vibe) as you practice this way.
BTW, the Beato Book upgrade is amazing. Thank You for this amazing piece of work.
So much fun!!! All of the solos are great. I vote for more videos like this!
This concept is amazing. Love it!
I love Phil's humility. All the solos were great but the thing about the original solo is the 40+ years of personal associations we all have with it. I'm always curious about solos like these - did Angus compose it or improvise it? It sounds thought out but it could've been completely spontaneous for Angus and his head, heart and hands.
It sounds "thought out" because its basic pentatonic licks - anyone can improvise with the pentaonic scale and make it sound "thought out". There is absolutely nothing impressive about Angus' playing.
Well Will seeing as how Angus is so unimpressive and pentatonic licks are so easy why don't you play something technical hard and impressive for us that people love as much or more than black in black
Man thats your comment? Sounds angry lol
@@officialmetalwill Wouldn't be the internet without the obligatory pretentious commenter looking down on blues players/pentatonic scale.
@@officialmetalwill absolutely nothing special about Angus' playing except that it was the centrepiece of the best selling rock album of all time
Never thought of you as a pentatonic guy Rick, isn't that what Angus Young's known for? 😉 Many congrats on the 3 mil subs! Well deserved 👍
This was amazing! You guys ROCK!
i loved it !! Keep 'em coming Rick !!
Brilliant fellas. Rick nailed it, Angus solos have a beginning middle and end, with phrasing to die for. What else could you ask for?
I have to try and learn these versions. Phil's solo was my favorite but that ascending run by Rick was awesome and Bumble was somehow both the closest and farthest from the original. Fantastic!
All three of you killed it! Great job!
This was so much fun to watch, loved it
Fantastic work! My suggestion would be 'Reeling In The Years' because it's another one of those iconic solos that would be very interesting to hear reimagined by some great players.
Phil x stairway to heaven solo was the best thing I’ve ever heard. Can’t wait to hear this!
Yet again another great video!!! Love Phil x!!! ❤️
Loved all 3. Excellent job on an impossible task. Bravo x 3!!
Great idea Rick! Phil X and Bumblefoot are 2 great guitarists for sure. I think Bumblefoot can do more with a thimble that most can do with a slide.
Rick and Bumblefoot solos second parts were fire, but I have to give it to Phil, his solo was great from start to finish!
I think you hit the nail on the head when you guys talked about how Angus concludes and starts a new idea at the same time. Soloing mastery.
Love this content, I'll watch it and anything like it every time.
Bumblefoot's solo was very good, especially the end part where he got creative, Rick did a solid job and got it to sound like him, and Phil's solo just kicked ass. Well done by all three! Fun to listen to 🤘🤘
How about you guys try to reimagine the solo for “Sultans Of Swing” by Dire Straits
That would be cool
That's a great shout, and would be incredibly challenging I reckon. Poor Phil would have to clear his schedule for an entire week!
That is probably my favorite guitar song of all time... the whole song, including the perfect solos... masterpiece.
First off, I'm Australian, so you're on shaky territory messing with AC/DC. You guys just translated one of the greatest speeches a guitar ever made with all the respect and love it deserves. I have no theory or practical training in music, just love, and Rick, I love your work.
Just amazing. You guys _all_ killed it.
All great! Bumblefoot 😳, how does he play like that 😩💙
I really love this. Millions of UA-camrs have the chops to play iconic songs note for note perfectly, while some may even be better than the actual musician. However, very few can come up with their own creative works. So impressed with all three interpreted solos, but I'm blown away by Bumblefoot's version. I hope you can continue doing this series. This is in line with your exercise licks in that it works on the brain's creative part instead of the instruments' technical aspects.
Love these videos. Thanx Rick.
Loved your solo Rick! Amazing
Great Job, fun to watch. All solo’s expresses a great ‘homage’ to Angus. I’d like to see Rick ask Rhett Schull to cover a solo by Neal Schon (Journey).
These were all great. Love Rick and Phil. My favorite of the 3 is Bumblefoot. But honestly, Angus rules. Thing about a great solo is, its not who's best but whos first. Great video. DO HOTEL CALIFORNIA!!!
Great suggestion.
Second that- three Forrest guitar players doing their own Story to the solo… and has to fit together at the finale
I'll vote for anything Eagles. Hotel California, so yes!
@@rdotkey One of these nights has some killer guitar parts. too. Thats a whole series worth
@@barryeaston6837 Forrest??
Highly entertaining. Appreciated what Phil X said about getting the best take *on video* Mad respect to you all.
This was awesome! Great job all!
Ricks solo is legendary, I would love a full breakdown explaining the theory behind it, for example the scales he's using, how he's basing it on the OG solo and backing progression and just the general thought progression RE how he's putting it together.
So good man
I liked the second half of his solo but not the first... and overall you can hear that he isn't a rock guy. A good solo but nothing to rock out about (unlike the other two)
@@Raymaster7482 oh yeah for sure. Ricks is probably the least fitting to the song, the second one is original and (IMO) best fitting and the last is just the original solo shuffled around (on a fretless tho so not even mad). So by that metric the first is the worst of the lot.
But the video premise aside, I think Rick's is the most unique and I just love the sound. There's something about it that I just love, outside the video premise I reckon it's the best, I just flows so well , it incorporates Rick and Angus's styles seamlessly and it isn't blocky like the others.
I feel like Angus is the Ringo of guitar. He serves the song pretty much perfectly, so it's hard for my brain to reconcile with that solo being anything other than what he plays. All 3 solos were really cool, but I think Bumblefoot's did the best job of evolving the original ideas.
I don't remember the original solo that well so hearing your takes on it, and how each player inject his own style into it was really fun and educational :) gz on 3m subs Rick!
That was so awesome! The solos were killer! Also, Phil X is hilarious! 😂
Amazing Rick! that was cool!....Steely Dan Reeling in the years would be interesting to see what you guys would come up with! cheers!
I just tried doing this. It's so hard when the original solo is so engrained in you and you're stuck thinking "No, THAT'S how you play it!"
My Mind is now blown! You guys are beyond gifted!!! All three of you sound great!
Loved it!!!
