Liver 1, Blood supply and drainage

How does the liver receive its blood supply and why does most of the blood come to the liver from the hepatic postal vein. Just what is the point of this strange portal system?

Thank you Dr Campbell for your comprehensive series about the Liver, however there was an single component that was confusing.
Earlier you spoke about how 70% of the blood supply came from the aorta, at 6:56 you then say 70% came from the gastrointestinal tract and 30% from the aorta.

Rima Chahrouk Yes, he made a mistake. Around 75% of the blood that reaches the liver comes from the GI tract via the portal vein, and the other 25% comes from the hepatic arteries (left and right) from the aorta.
